Setsuyo ryori taizen or Toryu setsuyo ryori taizen [trans.: Complete Manual of Cuisine of our School]

51 illus. in the text. Five vols. in one. 8vo, cont. orig. wrappers (rubbed), new stitching. Edo & Osaka: 1714. First edition of this notable gastronomy book; it is rather uncommon. The Shijo School of Cooking was established by professional chefs during the Muromachi period (ca. 1400-1550). These chefs specialized in preparing formal banquets for nobility. The text is a compilation of techniques and recipes taken from earlier noteworthy cook books of this school. There are details on cutting and slicing, the meanings of the dimensions of the long metal chopsticks, and very numerous recipes. The illustrations represent the elaborate seasonal displays of foods, with a particular focus on fish, other sea foods in soups, poultry, and vegetables. A number of idealized menus are presented along with rules about which foods go together and which don't. There are a number of illustrations depicting cutting and carving techniques. At the end of the text, there is a substantial section on remedying food poisoning, along with favored foods for people who are sick. Occasional minor worming, well-mended. ? Rath, Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan, pp. 48, 69-70, 83, 94, 101, 107, 114, 147, & 219.

The Philosophical Disputations from the Eighth Book of Physics... Father Johann Ringelhan of the Society of Jesus... Charles-Ferdinand University of Prague... 1714.

Prague, 1714. Manuscript journal of philosophical discussions, essays, and lectures, 60 in number and presenting eighteenth century natural sciences theories, made by Jesuit priest Johann Ringelhan (1680-1740) at the Charles University in Prague, transcribed directly from the original works by a Carlo Sabati, most likely Ringelhan's pupil. With signed and dated manuscript inscription to a front leaf dated. 8vo. 396 pages in manuscript, plus 3 page index on watermarked paper. Full calf boards, four raised bands and label to spine. Volume measures approximately 17 x 21 x 4 cm. Title: "Disputationes Philosophicae in octo libros Physiconas Ar'tis... Patre Johanne Ringelhan de S. Jesu... Carolo-Ferdinandea Universitat Pragae .... 1714.". [The Philosophical Disputations from the Eighth Book of Physics... Father Johann Ringelhan of the Society of Jesus... Charles-Ferdinand University of Prague... 1714.] This volume is an early example of the scholarly studies required by a new member of the Society of Jesus, and reveals beliefs held at the turn of the eighteenth century, mainly in terms of the complexities of natural philosophy. Since the earliest days, and still now, after taking their first vows, Jesuits study philosophy in order to develop one's capacity for intellectual inquiry and philosophical argumentation. Following the writer's prologue, the volume begins with the heading, "Tractatus I. In Librum primum Physicorum. Disputatio I. De Principiys Corporiy [Nataliy?]..." [Essay I. From the first Book of Natural Philosophy / Physics. Debate I. Principles of Corporal Structure]. This volume contains an immense amount of detail from a fascinating era of science and philosophy, with 60 separate topics transcribed by a Jesuit scholar, and penned in diminutive cursive Latin text, the lot neatly listed in the writer's index for easy reference. Jesuit priest Johann Ringelhan (19 April 1680 - 26 April 1740) was from North Bohemia. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1696, and taught philosophy, morality and controversy, among subjects before becoming chancellor of the universities in Olomouc and Breslau. Shortly before beginning his appointment as Director of the Jesuit's College in Brunn, Ringelhan died in Prague. Ringelhan is mentioned in "Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus" (Volume VI, 1861), by renowned bibliographer and Belgian Jesuit Augustin de Backer and French Jesuit scholar Carlos Sommervögel. Johann Ringelhan (19 April 1680 - 26 April 1740) wrote many scholarly works. Following are some examples: In 1713 he published, "Vitales Mariophilorum cineres in anniversariis inferiis alma sodalitate majori magnae matris virginis ab Arch-Angelo Salutatae in Caesareo et Academico Societatis Jesu Collegio Pragae ad S. Clementem erecta et confirmata..." This is held at the Ludwig-Maximilian University Library in Munich. In 1721 he published, "Universitas Angelica In Vitae Sanctitate fundata: Scientiarum Studio confirmata Orbi Literario In Subsidium, ac emolumentum erecta, In Divo Thoma De Aquino..." In 1728 he also contributed to a work by Johann Kugler (1654-1721) titled, "Quaestiones Theologico-Canonicae, Ex Tractatu de Divortio Ab Authore Operis Reverendo, Religioso, ac Eximio Patre Joanne Kugler, e Societate JESU, Sacro-Sanctae Theologiae Doctore, olim Univesitatis Wratislaviensis, & Olomucensis, Amplissimo Cancellario excerptae, Et methodo Scholastica pertractatae. His accedunt. Theses Ex Universa Theologia Scholastica, Quas In Alma, Caesarea, Regiaque Universitate Leopoldina Societatis JESU Wratislaviae..." The Franciscan University of Prague was founded by Charles IV in 1345. Its official title today is the "Imperial and Royal Franz Ferdinand University." All professors are appointed by the State, even the theological professors; these latter are appointed in agreement with the Archbishop of Prague, who is chancellor of both theological faculties. After the battle of the White Mountain, the Jesuits, who had been expelled in the years 1618-21, came to have a predominant influence over the emperor in matters concerning instruction on account of their "Plan of study", and the great work they did for Catholicism. In 1638 Ferdinand III limited the monopoly of teaching enjoyed by the Jesuits by taking from them the rights, properties, and archives of the Carolina, the faculties of law and medicine, and making these once more independent under an imperial protector. After the Thirty-Years' War the university received its permanent constitution and by a formal ceremony (4 March, 1654) the Carolo-Ferdinandea was again united and placed under a chancellor, the Archbishop of Prague, and an imperial superintendent. The Jesuits retained all the professorships in the philosophical and theological faculties up to 1757, when a Dominican and an Augustinian were also appointed to give theological instruction. In the two secular faculties the number of lay professors increased after the abolition, in 1612, of the obligatory celibacy of the professors. The secular professors were appointed by the emperor; the Jesuit professors were merely presented to him. They held closely to the Ratio studiorum of the Society and, in regard to discipline and jurisdiction, they were entirely their own masters. The theological faculty had four regular professorships; that of law, four to six; the philosophical, three to five; the medical, five. The dilapidated Carolinum was rebuilt in 1718 by Max Kanka at the expense of the State. The university was strictly Catholic: the profession of faith that had to be made on receiving a degree before the chancellor, the Archbishop of Prague, excluded non-Catholics from the professorships; the rector granted the degrees for the ecclesiastical chancellor (pro cancellario). The laws of the university prescribed that the whole teaching corps should receive Communion on Maundy Thursday and (after 1602) should take part as a body in the Corpus Christi procession. From 1650 those who received degrees took an oath to maintain the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin as long as the Church did not decide against it, and this oath was annually renewed on 8 December by all the cives academici. Such, on the whole, was the status which continued until the bureaucratic reform of the universities of Austria in 1752 and 1754.

Manuscript Journal - Jesuit Philosophical Discussion, Essays and Lectures

Prague, 1714. Some wear to boards, upper margins closely trimmed, otherwise Very Good condition. Since the earliest days, and still now, after taking their first vows, Jesuits study philosophy in order to develop one's capacity for intellectual enquiry and philosophical argumentation. Such, on the whole, was the status which continued until the bureaucratic reform of the universities of Austria in 1752 and 1754. . Very Good.

An Essay Upon Indulgences, by E.S.

n.p.. Hardcover. B01N64ECO8 Rare 1714 first edition, association copy (English bio-bibliographer Joseph Gillow), 4 x 6 3/8 inches tall full embossed calf leather bound, four raised bands and gilt lettering to spine, [8], 116, [2] pp. Recently rebound with refreshed endpapers. 1890 bookplate of Joseph Gillow to blank front free-endpaper, which is soiled and has a bit of edge chipping to the fore edge. Slight soiling to title page and a couple of pages with slight marginal soiling. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare Roman Catholic essay about indulgences by Edward Saltmarsh (1656 - 1737), probably printed at the Jesuit press in Liege in what is now Belgium, given the restrictions then in effect against Catholic publishing in England. The English Short Title Catalog (No. T182241) locates only eight copies at institutions worldwide - five in England and three in the U.S. (Huntington Library, St. Louis University and U.C. Berkeley). ~LR1~ In the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, an indulgence is 'a way to reduce the amount of punishment one has to undergo for sins.' It may reduce the temporal punishment after death, in the state or process of purification called Purgatory. By the late Middle Ages, the abuse of indulgences, mainly through commercialization, had become a serious problem which the Church recognized but was unable to restrain effectively. Indulgences were from the beginning of the Protestant Reformation a target of attacks by Martin Luther and all other Protestant theologians. Eventually the Catholic Counter-Reformation curbed the excesses, but indulgences continue to play a role in modern Catholic religious life. . Very Good. 1714. First Edition.

Document Signed, a good bold signature, 1 page folio on vellum with papered seal and blue revenue stamps, given at St James's 11 January 1714/15.

      - Appointing John Nutt to be a lieutenant in the regiment commanded by Lieutenant General William Seymour, the Queen's Regiment of Foot. George I had succeeded to the throne on the death of Queen Anne on 1 August 1714. His first regnal year therefore ran until the end of July in the following year. Until 1752 the first day of the new year was officially 25 March, so the present document bears the date in the form of a fraction 1714/15 to indicate that under the old reckoning still in force in England (Scotland had changed in 1600) the year was to be known as 1714.

An early political leaflet petitioning Parliament for greater enforcement of duties on foreign brandy, arguing that English brandy is under threat from black-market foreign brandy in port towns. The document also explains the growing importance of English brandy to the British economy, enumerating the various British and colonial industries its manufacture supports, including those of corn, coal, molasses, and course sugars. Among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid-1710s.
