The Adventures of Rivella; or, The History of the Author of the Atalantis . . . Deliver'd in a Conversation to the Young Chevalier D'Aumont in Somerset-House Garden, by Sir Charles Lovemore. Done into English from the French

London: Printed [for Edmund Curll], 1714, 1714. First edition. NCBEL II, 987; Straus, The Unspeakable Curll, page 227; ESTC T65369. Fine copy.. 8vo, recent brown calf period style by Philip Dusel, red morocco label, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. Frontis. Additional leaf with a printed key to the characters from Curll's later editions bound in at the end. The fictionalized memoirs of novelist, playwright and journalist Delarivier Manley (c.1670-1724). The story, written under the guise of a translation and in part a roman à clef about contemporary characters, scandals and affairs, is told in a conversation between two gentleman who discuss the life of Rivella, though she is not present. This mask of translation was a means for Manley to sing the praises of her own charms and to defend her reputation, which had come under attack because, as the narrator notes, "what is not a Crime in Men is scandalous and unpardonable in Woman, as she herself has very well observ'd in divers Places, throughout her own Writings." Rivella went through several editions, but Manley's name was not attached to it until after her death, at which time the publisher Curll also printed a key to the characters.

An Act for Providing a Publick Reward for such Person or Persons as Shall Discover the Longitude at Sea

London: J. Baskett, Assigns of T. Newcomb, H. Hills, 1714. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. Contemporary blind-stamped reverse calf, red morocco spine label. Wear to lower corner of front board, some sporadic toning and foxing to text. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. "Nothing is so much wanted and desired at Sea, than the Discovery of the Longitude" The first publication of the Longitude Act, which encouraged the discovery of a method of quickly and accurately determining a ship's longitude. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier / Horblitt). The Act established the Longitude Board, tasked with evaluating proposals for measuring longitude and awarding prizes. The top prize of £20,000 was reserved for any method that could measure longitude within one half of a degree. Subsequent Longitude Acts - there was a series of such acts throughout the 18th century - added various other incentives. The problem of accurately determining longitude had confounded navigators and scientists for centuries. The common method of calculating longitude by dead reckoning relied on estimates of speed and direction and was therefore subject to cumulative errors. The need to more accurately determine longitude was brought to the fore by the Scilly naval disaster of 1707, in which four British warships and some 1500 men were lost off the Isles of Scilly after losing their bearings during a storm. The Navigation Act lead to the development of the lunar distance method in 1763 by Nevil Maskelyne and the invention of the marine chronometer by John Harrison in 1773. Harrison received more prize money under the Act than anyone else, and the marine chronometer eventually came into wide use in the 19th century. The act was issued separately and as part of the collected acts of Parliament. It is found here in a contemporary bound volume of Acts from the 10th and 12th years Queen Anne's reign. A notably handsome copy. $750. * First edition. "The Difficulty is to find out what a Man intended after he is dead; and concerning such Intentions, there have been so many nice speculations and fine Constructions both of Words and Sentences, that a Man may with great Truth affirm, many Wills have been made after the Testator himself hath been dead. (...) Lord Hales tells us in Fry and Porter's Case, that a will may be any thing, every thing, nothing, and the reason is plain, for when a man is sick, and yet hath a disposing power, he usually writes non-sense, and then the judges must rack their brains to find out what he intended" (Preface). This book had two other editions in 1724 and 1733. In addition to treatises on evidence, game law and a notable JP manual, Nelson produced editions of Dalton's Countrey Justice, Blount's Nomo Lexicon and Manwood's Laws of the Forest. Chez François Foppens, à Brusselle (Bruxelles) 1714, In-8 (, (24) 528pp. et (8) 539-784p. ; (2) 344pp. (14) et xxxiv (10) 560pp. et xxiij, 544pp., 4 volumes reliés. - New edition whose realization is due to Denis Godefroy. A genealogical table brochure and 6 portraits regravés by Audran. Binders full brown sheepskin mouchbetée. Back with nerves decorated. as exhibits in tan leather. golden volume numbers.

A very rare map taken from the "Nouveau Petit Atlas - Atlas soluagé de son gros pesant fardeau" printed in Leiden circa 1714. The atlas is very rare and only one complete copy is known in the library of Leiden, while Burden old only the first volume. The atlas is composed of nine parts: a general part "Nouveau Petit Atlas" and 8 parts with maps of a certain region each titled "Atlas soulagé de son gros & pesant fardeau". Almost all maps are printed from reworked plates of Janssonius's "Atlas Minor". The titles and scale were translated into French. The cartouches have been modernized and windrose added. Copperplate with contemporary outline colour, perfect conditions. Great rarity. Van der Krogt, Koeman's Atlas Neerlandici, Vol. III B, pp. 561/570, 352:51. Dimensioni 200 160mm

A Cat May Look Upon a King

Amsterdam 1714 - 59 pp Octavo. three-quarter black morocco over marbled boards, lettered in gilt on spine, marbled endpapers (rebound perhaps early 1900s). Sometimes there may be two facing title pages, one as here and one with a woodcut of a cat. The title "A Cat May Look Upon the King" comes from an old saying which means "Even a person of low status or importance has rights."An updated version of Sir Anthony's satirical account of English kings first published in 1652. Anthony Weldon was an English 17th century courtier and politician. who supported Parliament during the English Civil War, and held and administered the county of Kent. He is thought to be the author of "The Court and Character of King James I" which contains the comment that James was "the wisest fool in Christendom." He was dismissed from the court of King James which is usually thought to be the cause for the book's criticisms of the King.Weldon says about Henry VIII "To say much of him, were to make you surfeit; Sir Walter Rawleigh's [sic] testimony of him is sufficient. If all the Pictures and Patterns of a merciless Prince were lost in the world, they might all be painted again to the life out of the story of this king." Of King James "To write the Life and Reign of this King, requires a better Book-man, and a better Pen-man; That which I have to observe, is only to render him as great a Tyrant as any of the rest; . he laid as many springs to enslave this Nation as every any; his will was the sole rule of his government ." Of James II he says "Had the courage of his grand-father, and the religion of his mother; the Malice and Inveteracy of his father, and was altogether rul'd by pristes, Jesuits . it was more than suspected that he had the chief hand in the burning of the City of London [the fire of 1666] .". Title page relined with some parts of margins lacking, contemporary brown ink notations on first page. Updated version of the original 1652 edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Virginia Marylandia et Carolina In America Septentrionali

Nuremberg, 1714. No Binding. Near Fine. 19 ¼ x 22 ¾ inches. Fine original color; slight toning at centerfold, else excellent condition with a bold strike A beautiful example of the first state of one of the most decorative maps of the area, with a strong impression. Homann's map has been considered important "because it provides data on settlements of German immigrants. The map was intended to promote German emigration to America." (On The Map). In particular, this map is the first to show the new settlement of Germantown Teutsche Statt, centerpiece of then Governor Spotswood's plan to settle German immigrants in Virginia. Indeed, the map appears to focus strongly on the work of Governor Spotswood, as another of his projects, Christanna Fort, is on the map as well. Spotswood established Christanna Fort in 1714 as a means to protect tributary Indians from attacks by those who were hostile, such as the Tuscarora, and to facilitate trade between border Indians and the colonists. Christanna would become headquarters of the Virginia Indian Company, a joint stock company established by the Virginia Assembly in 1714 with Spotswood as president to regulate and conduct the trade between the Indians and the Virginians. This wealth of up-to-date detail pertinent to Spotswood is remarkable, appearing as it does on a map otherwise characterized by neither great accuracy nor modernity. Lake Erie has migrated far to the south of its actual location, and its southern shore is claimed by Florida. The mysterious and imaginary lake appearing on maps of Florida as far back as the 16th century is retained on the map as well.

He published his accusations in a text entitled ?Dubia? in 1695. He intended to convert to the Catholic Church but under the influence of the answers he received to his ?Dubia?, especially by the pietist Pilipp Jacob Spener, he instead emigrated to Oxford and found his doubts answered in the English church.         The Rape of the Lock. An Heroi-Comical Poem. In Five Canto's. Written by Mr Pope. The Second Edition.

Londo: Printed for Bernard Lintott 1714. in-8vo (covers 19,9 x 12,4 cm). Pp. (8), 48 + frontispiece and 5 plates (of which 2 reproductions). Later artif. leather. The plates accompanying Canto's II and III replaced by reproductions. Leaves foxed, modern artificial leather and two of six engravings replaced by copies, but otherwise a good copy of a famous edition. The first complete edition of this celebrated mock heroic poem from Pope's earlier period, appeared anonymously in Lintot's Miscellany in May 1712, when Pope had sold this first version (only two Canto's - 334 lines) to Lintott for 7 pounds. That Miscellany contained also others of Pope's minor poems. The immortal satirical poem was composed in a fortnight during the summer of 1711. It then first appeared complete and as a separate book in 1714, then revised, much expanded to 5 Canto's (749 lines) and reissued under Pope's own name. It is thought that the tenor of the poem was inspired by coffee-house gossiping; Pope himself frequented a number of coffee houses, but he also liked to prepare his coffee himself and inhaled coffee to relieve his headaches. But probably the origin of the poem was a quarrel between two Catholic familiesby a provocative practical joke of a 20-year old youth, Lord Petre, (the Baron in the poem) who had cut off a lock of hair from the head of Miss Arabella Fermor, a beauty of the day, and likewise a menber of the catholic society known to Pope. The poem was written on the suggestion of a common friend, in order to appease the quarrel by a little pleasantry. The poem was dedicated.to Miss Arabella, although it seems that (according to Pope, shewas offended, although he had affirmed her in his Dedication that "all the Passages of the Canto's are Fabulous (except the Loss of your Hair, which I always name with Reverence" and ... "the Character of Belinda, as it is now manag'd, resembles you in nothing but in Beauty". The plate accompanying Canto III shows the young woman (Belinda) swooning in a coffee-dream after losing her lock of hair which is held up by the young man to the right, who has just cut it off. A peculiar detail of the engraving is the coffee pot in the foreground to the right. For the genre, Pope was indebted to Boileau's Lutrin, but in its blending of mock-heroic, satire and delicate fancy, this exquisite of filigree work, remains unmatched (Cambridge History English Literature, (1912), IX, p 70). There are much more aspects to the poem than simply being a social satire of the superficiality of the English society of that period and mocking the foolish and vain. It has also many political facets, a.o. indicating political change. But above all, "it shows extraordinary skill in the lighter kind of verse, and reflects with singular felicity, in some respects too faithfully, the tone of the best society of the day. It took at once the place which it has ever since occupied as a masterpiece"(DNB, XVI, pp 111-112). This is the second edition, first issue, published the same year as the first edition : catchword on page 8 = The. In our copy, page 7 is without page number, whereas all copies quoted by the ESTC (ESTC 5726, 5728 and 5729), published by Lintott in 1714 and having as catchword "The" on page 8, do have a page number 7. The Third Canto has the verse praising coffee, starting on p 25 and continued on p 26 : Coffee, (which makes the Politician wise, And see thro' all things with his half shut Eyes). Sent up in Vapours to the Baron's Brain. Title printed in red and black. At the beginning of the dedication and of each Canto a woodcut head-piece. Apart from these 6 head-pieces a nice end-piece at the end of Canto V. Engraved frontispiece and each of the five Canto's accompanied by an engraved plate, signed: "Lud. Du Guernier inv., C. Du Bose sculp." Collation: (^), A4, (1), B - D8 + 3 plates. Cf : ESTC T5726 (see remark in description); Foxon P941; Griffith 29. .
