?kapitulationen i Tönningen?

Fine copy.. 8vo, recent brown calf period style by Philip Dusel, red morocco label, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. Frontis. Additional leaf with a printed key to the characters from Curll's later editions bound in at the end. The fictionalized memoirs of novelist, playwright and journalist Delarivier Manley (c.1670-1724). The story, written under the guise of a translation and in part a roman à clef about contemporary characters, scandals and affairs, is told in a conversation between two gentleman who discuss the life of Rivella, though she is not present. This mask of translation was a means for Manley to sing the praises of her own charms and to defend her reputation, which had come under attack because, as the narrator notes, "what is not a Crime in Men is scandalous and unpardonable in Woman, as she herself has very well observ'd in divers Places, throughout her own Writings." Rivella went through several editions, but Manley's name was not attached to it until after her death, at which time the publisher Curll also printed a key to the characters.

An Act for Providing a Publick Reward for such Person or Persons as Shall Discover the Longitude at Sea

London: J. Baskett, Assigns of T. Newcomb, H. Hills, 1714. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. Contemporary blind-stamped reverse calf, red morocco spine label. Wear to lower corner of front board, some sporadic toning and foxing to text. First edition. [ii], 355-357, [1] pp. 4to. "Nothing is so much wanted and desired at Sea, than the Discovery of the Longitude" The first publication of the Longitude Act, which encouraged the discovery of a method of quickly and accurately determining a ship's longitude. "An early example of a means adopted by a government for encouraging scientific discovery and progress" (Grolier / Horblitt). The Act established the Longitude Board, tasked with evaluating proposals for measuring longitude and awarding prizes. The top prize of £20,000 was reserved for any method that could measure longitude within one half of a degree. Subsequent Longitude Acts - there was a series of such acts throughout the 18th century - added various other incentives. The problem of accurately determining longitude had confounded navigators and scientists for centuries. The common method of calculating longitude by dead reckoning relied on estimates of speed and direction and was therefore subject to cumulative errors. The need to more accurately determine longitude was brought to the fore by the Scilly naval disaster of 1707, in which four British warships and some 1500 men were lost off the Isles of Scilly after losing their bearings during a storm. The Navigation Act lead to the development of the lunar distance method in 1763 by Nevil Maskelyne and the invention of the marine chronometer by John Harrison in 1773. Harrison received more prize money under the Act than anyone else, and the marine chronometer eventually came into wide use in the 19th century. The act was issued separately and as part of the collected acts of Parliament. It is found here in a contemporary bound volume of Acts from the 10th and 12th years Queen Anne's reign. A notably handsome copy. $750. * First edition. "The Difficulty is to find out what a Man intended after he is dead; and concerning such Intentions, there have been so many nice speculations and fine Constructions both of Words and Sentences, that a Man may with great Truth affirm, many Wills have been made after the Testator himself hath been dead. (...) Lord Hales tells us in Fry and Porter's Case, that a will may be any thing, every thing, nothing, and the reason is plain, for when a man is sick, and yet hath a disposing power, he usually writes non-sense, and then the judges must rack their brains to find out what he intended" (Preface). This book had two other editions in 1724 and 1733. In addition to treatises on evidence, game law and a notable JP manual, Nelson produced editions of Dalton's Countrey Justice, Blount's Nomo Lexicon and Manwood's Laws of the Forest. Chez François Foppens, à Brusselle (Bruxelles) 1714, In-8 (, (24) 528pp. et (8) 539-784p. ; (2) 344pp. (14) et xxxiv (10) 560pp. et xxiij, 544pp., 4 volumes reliés. - New edition whose realization is due to Denis Godefroy. A genealogical table brochure and 6 portraits regravés by Audran. Binders full brown sheepskin mouchbetée. Back with nerves decorated. as exhibits in tan leather. golden volume numbers.

      - Amsterdam, R. and G. Wetstein, J. Oosterwyk and H. van de Gaete, 1714. Folio (33.3 x 21.1 cm). Allegorical frontispiece (by Picart, dated 1711), title page (in red and black), engraved portrait of de Bruyn (by G. Kneller), [vi], 472, [xii] pp., and 260 numbered engraved plates (many double, folded), two large maps, and 34 large text engravings, not numbered, including portraits, views, etc. Contemporary blind ruled and embossed vellum. Spine with six raised bands, title written in ink, in a neat contemporary hand.l First edition, second issue of one of the most richly illustrated voyages through Russia, Persia (Iran) and adjacent countries and territories, made by the Dutch painter Cornelis de Bruin (as spelled on title page), or de Bruyn (as spelled in the portrait) (1652-1727). He went by sea from Amsterdam along the coast of Norway, above the polar circle to Archangel, and travelled southwards by river and overland through Russia and the Caspian Sea to Persia, the Gulf and by ship again onward to Batavia (now Jakarta), back to Persia, and homewards across the Mediterranean. It is an extensive work important to naval and travel history, and includes beautiful, large, panoramic views of, for instance, Archangel, Moscow, and "Spahan" (= Isfahan), some impressively long when unfolded. The work contains a good deal of zoological illustrations; hence it is recorded in Claus Nissen's "Zoologische Buchillustration". Most illustrations are, as stated in the title, from drawings made on the spot by de Bruin himself. The work was dedicated to Anton Ulrich, Duke of Brunswyk and Lunenburg. This edition is identical to the 1711 edition published for the author by Willem and David Goerree. Provenance: armorial bookplate of former private owner David Dunlop "Merito", small pictorial bookplate of E. van Tongeren on front pastedown, and one small previous owner's stamp - "A. Noorderbroek Amsterdam" - on the first blank. Old Japanese paper reinforcements to the outer edge of the front flyleaf, a few plates may be from another copy (same issue), tiny weak bookseller's stamp in title page lower margin, a pencil annotation below the portrait of De Bruin, otherwise clean. In all, an excellent copy in a contemporary binding. The plates in a strong impression. Henze I, 378; Nissen ZBI, 631N; Tiele, 207, 209. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A very rare map taken from the "Nouveau Petit Atlas - Atlas soluagé de son gros pesant fardeau" printed in Leiden circa 1714. The atlas is very rare and only one complete copy is known in the library of Leiden, while Burden old only the first volume. The atlas is composed of nine parts: a general part "Nouveau Petit Atlas" and 8 parts with maps of a certain region each titled "Atlas soulagé de son gros & pesant fardeau". Almost all maps are printed from reworked plates of Janssonius's "Atlas Minor". The titles and scale were translated into French. The cartouches have been modernized and windrose added. Copperplate with contemporary outline colour, perfect conditions. Great rarity. Van der Krogt, Koeman's Atlas Neerlandici, Vol. III B, pp. 561/570, 352:51. Dimensioni 200 160mm
