Johann Spangenberg

Thomas Brodrick
London: William Pearson for Thomas Ward, 1713. First edition, 1 volume in 2, 8vo, pp. [2] ads, [10], 23 (subscribers' list), [1], xvi, 218; [2], 221-448, [12] index; full contemporary paneled calf, gilt spines, red morocco labels; spines rubbed, small cracks starting at ends of joints, but generally a very good, sound set with the full compliment of 15 double-page engraved maps and plans. Horn 445: "Plainly this rather sumptuous work was issued for aristocratic readers. While it pays tribute to Marlborough, Blenheim, which is called Hochstet, is attributed to God's intervention as much as to the "sedateness" and courage of the two commanders...It is not surprising that neither Marlborough's names, nor any of his family, nor those of Addison, Steele, Garth, nor Godolphin, Sunderland, Halifax and other Whig leaders appear on the list of subscribers. This is among the earliest formal histories of Marlborough's military career.". [Attributes: First Edition]

KENNEDY, Peter.
FIRST EDITION. "One of the few books in English which documents what the enlightened eighteenth century surgeon knew about the eye...the original copies have become extremely scarce... One of the most detailed and interesting portions of the discussion is his description of cataract and its treatment by couching... Kennedy makes a few original observations. These include finding that a scratched convex lens will, in a dark room, produce an image. Also floaters can, according to the laws of optics, not be reproduced by stationary particles in the aqueous, but are attributed, following the teaching of Pitcairne, to changes in the retinal blood vessels" (Albert pp. 3 and 13). This is one of the few English books on ophthalmology of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, which are mostly quite rare. Twenty-six years later Kennedy published A supplement to Kennedy's Ophthalmographia, which is even rarer. The brief appendix on diseases of the ear is one of the earliest English writings on otology. Albert, Norton & Hurtes 1225. See James, Studies in the History of Ophthalmology in England, p. 90. Not in the Becker catalogue.

RAMAZZINI, Bernardino (1633-1714)
Antonio Capponi, 1713. [Click Below for Full Description]

London: John Morphew, 1713. First edition. 56 pp. 8vo. Swift vs. Burnet. First edition of Swift's reply to Gilbert Burnet's Introduction to volume 3 of his History of the Reformation. Burnet painted Popery as the deadliest of evils, and suggested that only Whig bishops, such as himself, could resist it. Swift, having switched to the Tory cause just a few years before, "makes the church his real theme [and] abandons impersonation; and if there are some playful fantasies and much sarcasm among his provisions, they are kept subordinate to the dignity of the main essay. Swift writes with a grave, self-conscious intensity ..." (Ephrenpreis, Swift II, p. 694). Rothschild 2049; Teerink 592. Disbound. In custom gray card folder with title label.

Besler, Basilius (1561–1629)
copper engraved plate with recent hand colouring; overall size c 57 x 45 cm; plate size c 48 x 40 cm. plate # 97. 3rd edition. text on verso.- A magnificent print from the ‘Hortus Eystettensis’ [The Garden of Eichstatt], one of the most amazing botanical books of the 17th century ever produced!- Basilius Besler, an apothecary and botanist from Nurnberg, was the curator of the prince bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The bishop took great pride in the gardens of his palace, Willibaldsburg, which rivalled other magnificent gardens in Europe, and asked Besler to compile a codex of all the plants growing there which, initially, was started in 1596 and designed by Joachim Camerius the Younger (1534-1598). It took Besler 16 years to complete the task; unfortunately, the bishop died weeks before the publication of the Hortus. - The garden was sacked by Swedish troops in 1633/4 during the 30 Year War but re-opened in 1998 after reconstruction, following closely the outline of the book.- What makes the Hortus so unique is that instead of portraying medicinal or culinary plants, the emphasis was on garden flowers, herbs, vegetables and exotic plants. These were depicted almost life size with great detail, and arranged artistically and pleasing to even the modern eye, with an average of 3 plants on one sheet. This arrangement made up a total of 1084 plants on 367 copper engravings on 368 large folio sized sheets. - First published in 1613, 300 copies were printed which took over four years to sell. Two version were produced of the first edition: one with te … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIDEROT, Denis.
[in total about 7500 pp.].First edition of the works of Denis Diderot (1713-1784), published fourteen years after his death. Diderot, one of the widest ranging and most creative minds of the Enlightenment, is best known as the motive force behind and author of many articles in his 28-volume Encyclopédie (1764-1772), which occupied him for more than twenty years, but he published works on a wide range of subjects before and after the Encyclopédie. The present 15 volumes, published from Diderot's manuscripts (including correspondence) and totalling about 7500 pages, therefore covers plays, novels and poetry as well as essays on philosophy, mathematics (including music), literature, art and religion, and includes correspondence with numerous men and women, including Voltaire. Although his Encyclopédie articles are not included, many were based on or carried further in publications included here, and 220 pages of vol. III are devoted to the Encyclopédia. Diderot's Encyclopédie, though enormously influential, left him in financial straits. The French government banned it and the French establishment shunned him as a radical, but from 1773 to his death he worked under the patronage of Catharine the Great of Russia, who bought his library and paid him to oversee it in Paris, giving him the freedom to pursue his literary and scholarly interests. In very good condition, with only some minor foxing, an occasional quire very slightly browned and an occasional minor marginal defect. With a small hole in the spine of one volume, but the bindings are otherwise also very good.l Adams, Bibl … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE RARE AND IMPORTANT SECOND EDITION (1713) - WITH SUBSTANTIAL CHANGES FROM THE EXTREMELY SCARCE FIRST EDITION - OF "THE GREATEST WORK IN THE HISTORY SCIENCE." ONE OF ONLY 750 COPIES PRINTED. "The Principia is generally described as the greatest work in the history of science. Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had certainly shown the way; but where they described the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the underlying universal laws. The Principia provided the great synthesis of the cosmos, proving finally its physical unity. Newton showed that the important and dramatic aspects of nature that were subject to the universal law of gravitation could be explained, in mathematical terms, within a single physical theory. With him the separation of natural and supernatural, of sublunar and superlunar worlds disappeared. The same laws of gravitation and motion rule everywhere; for the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motion of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens. The whole cosmos is composed of inter-connecting parts influencing each other according to these laws. It was this grand conception that produced a general revolution in human thought, equalled perhaps only by that following Darwin's Origin of Species. It was the final, irrevocable break with a medieval conception based on Greek and Roman cosmology and a scholastic system derived from the medieval interpretation of Aristotle... Antoine Hamilton
Cologne: Pierre Marteau. Condition: Near Fine. First edition, 1713, the Robert Hoe copy with his blue gilt small leather plate, full ruddy brown morocco gilt, a.e.g., (4) 426 (2) pp. near fine copy with just a touch of darkening at the joints. The first appearance of these posthumously published memoirs (the count lived from 1621 to 1707), dictated in part, but mainly authored by his brother in law Anthony Hamilton. The count, who had no scruples as far as women or money were concerned, was exiled from France in 1662 for seducing one of the king's favorite mistresses. He went to England, where he found the court of Charles II to his satisfaction, filled with intrigue, amatory adventures, etc. There he married Elizabeth Hamilton, reportedly forced by her brothers to do so. They went back to France where the Countess who was witty and beautiful held her own in the court of Louis XIV. The memoirs of the count are among the masterpieces of the era, with an elegant style and a marked lack of restraint, especially when it came to the gossip and licentiousness of the court of Charles II. In this book, the count is portrayed as a real rascal (un fripon). There were apparently three issues in 1713 of this book, with priority not established definitively. This one has p. 121 correctly numbered. [Attributes: First Edition]

BERNOULLI, Jakob.
Basel: Thurneisen Brothers, 1713. First edition. First edition, a truly exceptional copy, uncut in original boards. It is hard to imagine a finer copy. "Jakob 1 Bernoulli's posthumous treatise, edited by his nephew [Nicholas I Bernoulli], (the title literally means "the art of [dice] throwing") was the first significant book on probability theory: it set forth the fundamental principles of the calculus of probabilities and contained the first suggestion that the theory could extend beyond the boundaries of mathematics to apply to civic, moral and economic affairs. The work is divided into four parts, the first a commentary on Huygens's De ratiociniis in ludo aleae (1657), the second a treatise on permutations (a term Bernoulli invented) and combinations, containing the Bernoulli numbers, and the third an application of the theory of combinations to various games of chance. The fourth and most important part contains Bernoulli's philosophical thoughts on probability: probability as a measurable degree of certainty, necessity and chance, moral versus mathematical expectation, a priori and a posteriori probability, etc. It also contains his attempt to prove what is still called Bernoulli's Theorem: that if the number of trials is made large enough, then the probability that the result will lie between certain limits will be as great as desired" (Norman). This was the first statement of the law of large numbers. "In the first Part (pp. 2-71) Jakob Bernoulli complemented his reprint of Huygens's tract by extensive annotations which contained important modifications and generalis … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

JOUTEL, Henri (1640-1735)
Estienne Robinot, Paris, 1713. xxxiv, 386pp., plus engraved folding map. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers First edition of this first-hand account of La Salle's ill-fated expedition, and Joutel's subsequent incredible journey north to Quebec, through Texas, Arkansas, the Mississippi, and Illinois. Complete with the folding map. Of the three major narratives of the journey, this record, by La Salle's closest subordinate, is the most valuable. The party embarked in 1684, ostensibly to establish a French base at the mouth of the Mississippi as a headquarters for operations, but also to push as far as possible into the region in order to gain a foothold against the Spanish. In fact, through a conscious deceit, the base was established at Espiritu Santo Bay, in Texas, from whence the party spent two years making excursions into the surrounding territory. When promised reinforcements failed to appear, La Salle and his men determined to return to Canada via the Mississippi; however, one of the company assassinated La Salle when they reached the Trinity River, and the party split up. Some of the survivors, including Joutel, pressed on, reaching Canada by way of the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers. The present edition is the first edition of the work and is rare; a more commonly found English edition appeared the following year. "Most reliable eye-witness account of La Salle's two-years wanderings in Texas. The map, based on La Salle's Mississippi … [Click Below for Full Description]

The party embarked in 1684, ostensibly to establish a French base at the mouth of the Mississippi as headquarters for operations, but as well to push as far as possible into the region in order to gain a foothold against the Spanish. In fact, and via a conscious deceit, the base was established at Espiritu Santo Bay in Texas, where the party spent two years making excursions into the surrounding territory. When expected reinforcements failed to appear, La Salle and his men determined to return to Canada via the Mississippi; however, a member of the expedition assassinated La Salle when they reached the Trinity River, and the company split up. Some of the survivors, including Joutel, pressed on, reaching Canada by way of the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers. Joutel's diary passed to other hands prior to publication, and the present edition, edited by De Michel, is somewhat abridged. It was published to counter the errors in Tonti's DERNIERES DECOUVERTES... (1697). The complete journal was not published until 1878, as part of Margry's compilation. Joutel's JOURNAL is one of the major works of the period on the region, and "of the three narratives of this journey, those of Joutel, Cavelier, and Douay, the first is by far the best" (Francis Par … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zoologie - Krafft, Abraham Friedrich.
Nürnberg, Johann Ludwig Buggel, 1713. 18x11,5 cm. (8) Bl., 630 S., (13) Bl. Index. Mit gest. doppelblattgr. Frontispiz von Reiff und doppelblattgr. Titel. Gesprenkelter Pp.-Bd. der Zeit mit Papierrückenschild. Horn/Schenkling 12340. - Lindner Bibliographie der deutschen ... Jagdliteratur 11.1171.02. - Steffi Windelen, Mäuse, Maden, Maulwürfe. Zur Thematisierung von Ungeziefer im 18. Jhdt. (Diss. 2010, Online Version). Materials von Interesse ist? (Kurt Lindner). BERKELEY, GEORGE. - [THE PERCEPTUAL RELATIVITY]
London, Printed by G. James, for Henry Clements, 1713. 8vo. Contemporary marbled full calf boards, prettily rebacked in period style with gilt title-label, raised bands and gilt ornamentations to spine. During the re-backing, new end-papers have been inserted, but the original front end-paper , containing old owners' inscriptions, has been preserved and is still withbound. Three old owners' names to title-page, two of them crossed out. The title-page had been repaired at the outer margin, affecting three letters in the last three lines of the subtitle (To open a Method for rendering the/ SCIENCES more easy, useful, and/ compensious), namely the "he" in "the" and the "d" in "and" as well as part fo the double-ruled border, which has been drawn up again. The final leaf with a somewhat crode repair causing loss of some words towards the hinge. A small hole in A3, not repaired. A bit of brownspotting, mostly at beginning and end. With its flaws, still and overall acceptable copy of this extremely rare title. (10), 166 pp. ¶ The very scarce first edition of Berkeley's other magnum opus, his great work of metaphysics, second in importance only to his "Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge" (1710). The present work is not only a popularized version of the "Treatise", though it is a fact that it was more widely studied and more easily understood - being written as an almost Platonian dialogue between Hylas (Greek for "matter" - thought to be the representative for John Locke) and Philonous (Greek for "the lover of reason" - Berkeley's spokesman) - it also constitute … [Click Below for Full Description]

NEWTON, Sir Isaac.
Cambridge: [Cornelius Crownfield at the University Press], 1713. The important second edition of "the greatest work in the history of science" (PMM). This is a fine copy in an unrestored contemporary binding. The Principia elucidates the universal physical laws of gravitation and motion which lie behind phenomena described by Newton's predecessors Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler. Newton establishes the mathematical basis for the motion of bodies in unresisting media (the law of inertia); the motion of fluids and the effect of friction on bodies moving through fluids; and, most importantly, sets forth the law of universal gravitation and its unifying role in the cosmos. "For the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motion of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens ... It was this grand conception that produced a general revolution in human thought, equalled perhaps only by that following Darwin's Origin of Species" (PMM). Published twenty-six years after the first, this second edition of Newton's Principia was printed at the Cambridge University Press, which Richard Bentley had recently revived. Edited by Roger Cotes (1682-1716), it contains his important preface in which he attacks the Cartesian philosophy "and refutes an assertion that Newton's theory of attraction is a causa occulta" (Babson). There is also a second preface by Newton, and substantial additions, the chapters on the lunar theory and the theory of comets being much enlarged. But the most important addition is the Scholium generale, which appears here in print for the first t … [Click Below for Full Description]

From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. With a portrait frontispiece of James Puckle . Collated using the copy on ECCO, appears complete. . This work was first published in 1711 and contains a series of prose dialogues whereby a young man describes members of his club to his father. The work provides an alphabetical sequence of stereotypical characters from a 'Theophrastian' sense. Examples include Antiquary, Rake, Youth and Zanny. (Oxford DNB) James Puckle was an English inventor, lawyer and writer. He is chiefly remembered for his invention of the defence gun, better known as the Puckle gun.
