BESLER, Basilius.
Nuremburg, 1713. Copper-engraving, with fine hand colour. A magnificent plate from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. The Hortus Eystettensis is a pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was begun by Joachim Camerarius in 1596 and, after his death in 1598, completed by Basil Besler, a pharmacist from Nuremberg. A visitor, Philipp Hainhofer, in 1611 marvelled at the eight gardens, each containing 'flowers from a different country; they varied in the beds and flowers, especially in the beautiful roses, lilies, tulips.' The Hortus records this variety and beauty. The book is exceptional in every sense; in its variety and range of flowers, in its size, in its fine quality of engraving. It is also one of the earliest records of flowers from a specific, documented garden. Besler was asked to complete the work by Gemmingen in 1606; the huge nature of the task was clear to Besler and he enlisted the help of his younger brother Hieronymus and Ludwig Jungermann, a nephew of Camerarius. Printing the Hortus may have begun as early as 1607. Drawings were made in situ and from specimens sent by the Bishop to Nuremberg; the Bishop reported to Hainhofer that he had boxes of fresh flowers sent every week to Besler at Nuremberg for sketching. A team of at least 10 engravers were employed to translate the drawings to copperplates. The gardens, along with most of the town of Eichstatt, were destroyed by the invading Swedish troops unde … [Click Below for Full Description]

Basilius Besler
This splendid folio botanical engraving is from Basilius Besler's rare and highly sought after work "Hortus Eystettensis, sive Diligens et accurata omnium Plantarum, Florum, Stirpium, ex variis orbis terrae partibus, singulari studio collectarum, quae in celeberrimis viridariis arcem episcopalem ibidem cingentibus, olim conspiciebantur delineatio et ad vivum". The print available is from the third edition published in 1713 in Nuremberg and Eichstatt. The engraving was printed on superior chain-linked paper. --- Bishop-prince Johann Konrad von Gemmingen created a magnificent garden to praise God and celebrate the diversity of creation. In the early 1600s, the bishop-prince commissioned Basilius Besler to create a catalogue of his garden and thus "Hortus Eystettensis" was produced. --- Besler’s work, which depicted over 1100 specimens, is still widely considered one of the best botanical works ever created. Most of the plants depicted were drawn at their actual size. The first edition of the work was printed in 1613 and consisted of only about 300 copies. Hortus Eystettensis is truly a masterpiece and one of the most comprehensive and alluring botanical works ever produced. In the preface to an 1806 edition, Franz Seraph Widmann said ".by reason of.the magnificence of its engravings, [this work] deserves to rank high among the rarest works of its kind." --- The work is in excellent condition overall. The work is from 1713 so minor imperfections due to age are to be expected, and most imperfections (if present) can be noted in the pictures. Traduit en Francois par m. Petis de la Croix
Amsterdam: Pierre de Coup, 1711-, 1713. First edition, 4 vols in 2, 24mo in twelves (5¼” x 3”), pp. (6), 304; (6), 308; (4), 328; (2), 332, (1) “Table des Histories”, (5) Catalogue des Livres Nouveau Pierre de Coup”, four engraved frontispieces. Original full vellum, yapp side edges, all edges red. Near fine clean fresh copies. Vellum with minor soil. Sheets & plates unusually clean & fresh. Endsheets with paste action. WorldCat locates only 2 sets complete through four volumes. A fifth volume was published in 1713. The present four volumes in two was clearly published as complete to date as evidenced by the two in one format and the publisher’s catalogue at the end of volume 4. WorldCat shows scattered separate single holdings of all volumes. The work was probably inspired by Gallant’s 1707 translation of the Thousand and One Nights, but was compiled, in part at least, from various sources by Pétis de la Croix. He claimed the stories to have been translated from a Persian original, Hazar yek ruz, and were told to him by a dervish named Moclès, who had learned them from various Indian sources. This claim intended as a parallel authority of originality is at least questionable. Some believe the stories to be mostly the inventions of Petis de la Croix. Rare. Zoologie - Krafft, Abraham Friedrich
Nürnberg, Johann Ludwig Buggel, 1713. 18x11,5 cm. (8) Bl., 630 S., (13) Bl. Index. Mit gest. doppelblattgr. Frontispiz von Reiff und doppelblattgr. Titel. Gesprenkelter Pp.-Bd. der Zeit mit Papierrückenschild. Horn/Schenkling 12340. - Lindner Bibliographie der deutschen ... Jagdliteratur 11.1171.02. - Steffi Windelen, Mäuse, Maden, Maulwürfe. Zur Thematisierung von Ungeziefer im 18. Jhdt. (Diss. 2010, Online Version). - Ein höchst interessantes Werk, das auch ?für die Geschichte der Jagdtechnik wegen der Fülle des zusammengetragenen ... Materials von Interesse ist? (Kurt Lindner). - (Ecken etwas bestossen, Kanten berieben). - Unbeschnitten. Hamilton, Antoine or Anthony, Le Comte de Grammont; Philibert Count de Gramont
Cologne: Pierre Marteau. First edition, 1713, the Robert Hoe copy with his blue gilt small leather plate, full ruddy brown morocco gilt, a.e.g., (4) 426 (2) pp. near fine copy with just a touch of darkening at the joints. The first appearance of these posthumously published memoirs (the count lived from 1621 to 1707), dictated in part, but mainly authored by his brother in law Anthony Hamilton. The count, who had no scruples as far as women or money were concerned, was exiled from France in 1662 for seducing one of the king's favorite mistresses. He went to England, where he found the court of Charles II to his satisfaction, filled with intrigue, amatory adventures, etc. There he married Elizabeth Hamilton, reportedly forced by her brothers to do so. They went back to France where the Countess who was witty and beautiful held her own in the court of Louis XIV. The memoirs of the count are among the masterpieces of the era, with an elegant style and a marked lack of restraint, especially when it came to the gossip and licentiousness of the court of Charles II. In this book, the count is portrayed as a real rascal (un fripon). There were apparently three issues in 1713 of this book, with priority not established definitively. This one has p. 121 correctly numbered. Near Fine.

SMITH, William.
London: Henry Overton, 1713. Original colour. 335 x 470mm. A close copy of Christopher Saxton's map of Suffolk, but with additional information added. It is one of a collection of twelve county maps drawn by William Smith and believed to have been engraved by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam in 1602-3. The other counties were never engraved, possibly because Hondius dropped the project in favour of Speed's atlas. About 1650 the plates came into the possession of Peter Stent, followed by John Overton in 1665, then his son Henry in 1707. For this state the English title and the roads were added.

DRYDEN.) JUVENAL & Persius.
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1713. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson,, 1713. Duodecimo (132 x 74 mm). Later 18th-century red straight-grain morocco, smooth spine lettered and ruled in gilt, single gilt fillet to covers, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. With 2 engraved frontispieces, one of which is a portrait of the dedicatee Charles Earl of Dorchester, and 13 other engraved plates. Minor soiling to morocco, dampstaining at foot of contents. A very good copy. First duodecimo edition of Dryden's translation, the fifth overall, first published in 1693. An attractively bound copy, with a pencilled note on the front free endpaper identifying the work as that of Roger Payne (1739-1797), the notable English bookbinder who had a significant influence on the development of the craft in Britain. The style, especially in the lettering on the spine, does bear resemblance to other bindings by Payne, but the claim cannot be verified.

BERNOULLI, Jakob
Thurneisen Brothers, Basel, 1713. First edition, a truly exceptional copy, uncut in original boards. It is hard to imagine a finer copy. "Jakob 1 Bernoulli's posthumous treatise, edited by his nephew [Nicholas I Bernoulli], (the title literally means "the art of [dice] throwing") was the first significant book on probability theory: it set forth the fundamental principles of the calculus of probabilities and contained the first suggestion that the theory could extend beyond the boundaries of mathematics to apply to civic, moral and economic affairs. The work is divided into four parts, the first a commentary on Huygens's De ratiociniis in ludo aleae (1657), the second a treatise on permutations (a term Bernoulli invented) and combinations, containing the Bernoulli numbers, and the third an application of the theory of combinations to various games of chance. The fourth and most important part contains Bernoulli's philosophical thoughts on probability: probability as a measurable degree of certainty, necessity and chance, moral versus mathematical expectation, a priori and a posteriori probability, etc. It also contains his attempt to prove what is still called Bernoulli's Theorem: that if the number of trials is made large enough, then the probability that the result will lie between certain limits will be as great as desired" (Norman). This was the first statement of the law of large numbers. "In the first Part (pp. 2-71) Jakob Bernoulli complemented his reprint of Huygens's tract by extensive annotations which contained important modifications and generalisations. Bernoul … [Click Below for Full Description]
