BERNOULLI, Jakob.
Basel: Thurneisen Brothers, 1713. First edition. First edition, a truly exceptional copy, uncut in original boards. It is hard to imagine a finer copy. "Jakob 1 Bernoulli's posthumous treatise, edited by his nephew [Nicholas I Bernoulli], (the title literally means "the art of [dice] throwing") was the first significant book on probability theory: it set forth the fundamental principles of the calculus of probabilities and contained the first suggestion that the theory could extend beyond the boundaries of mathematics to apply to civic, moral and economic affairs. The work is divided into four parts, the first a commentary on Huygens's De ratiociniis in ludo aleae (1657), the second a treatise on permutations (a term Bernoulli invented) and combinations, containing the Bernoulli numbers, and the third an application of the theory of combinations to various games of chance. The fourth and most important part contains Bernoulli's philosophical thoughts on probability: probability as a measurable degree of certainty, necessity and chance, moral versus mathematical expectation, a priori and a posteriori probability, etc. It also contains his attempt to prove what is still called Bernoulli's Theorem: that if the number of trials is made large enough, then the probability that the result will lie between certain limits will be as great as desired" (Norman). This was the first statement of the law of large numbers. "In the first Part (pp. 2-71) Jakob Bernoulli complemented his reprint of Huygens's tract by extensive annotations which contained important modifications and generalis … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAVARY (Jacques)

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

JOUTEL, Henri (1640-1735)
Estienne Robinot, Paris, 1713. xxxiv, 386pp., plus engraved folding map. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers First edition of this first-hand account of La Salle's ill-fated expedition, and Joutel's subsequent incredible journey north to Quebec, through Texas, Arkansas, the Mississippi, and Illinois. Complete with the folding map. Of the three major narratives of the journey, this record, by La Salle's closest subordinate, is the most valuable. The party embarked in 1684, ostensibly to establish a French base at the mouth of the Mississippi as a headquarters for operations, but also to push as far as possible into the region in order to gain a foothold against the Spanish. In fact, through a conscious deceit, the base was established at Espiritu Santo Bay, in Texas, from whence the party spent two years making excursions into the surrounding territory. When promised reinforcements failed to appear, La Salle and his men determined to return to Canada via the Mississippi; however, one of the company assassinated La Salle when they reached the Trinity River, and the party split up. Some of the survivors, including Joutel, pressed on, reaching Canada by way of the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers. The present edition is the first edition of the work and is rare; a more commonly found English edition appeared the following year. "Most reliable eye-witness account of La Salle's two-years wanderings in Texas. The map, based on La Salle's Mississippi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joutel, Henri
Paris: Chez Estienne Robinot..., 1713. xxxiv,386pp. plus large folding map. 12mo. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards. Ink notations on front endpapers, light scattered foxing. Map is bright and fresh. Very good. One of the premiere accounts of La Salle's tragic final voyage, compiled from the diary of his close subordinate. The party embarked in 1684, ostensibly to establish a French base at the mouth of the Mississippi as headquarters for operations, but as well to push as far as possible into the region in order to gain a foothold against the Spanish. In fact, and via a conscious deceit, the base was established at Espiritu Santo Bay in Texas, where the party spent two years making excursions into the surrounding territory. When expected reinforcements failed to appear, La Salle and his men determined to return to Canada via the Mississippi; however, a member of the expedition assassinated La Salle when they reached the Trinity River, and the company split up. Some of the survivors, including Joutel, pressed on, reaching Canada by way of the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers. Joutel's diary passed to other hands prior to publication, and the present edition, edited by De Michel, is somewhat abridged. It was published to counter the errors in Tonti's DERNIERES DECOUVERTES... (1697). The complete journal was not published until 1878, as part of Margry's compilation. Joutel's JOURNAL is one of the major works of the period on the region, and "of the three narratives of this journey, those of Joutel, Cavelier, and Douay, the first is by far the best" (Francis Par … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nürnberg, Johann Ludwig Buggel, 1713. 18x11,5 cm. (8) Bl., 630 S., (13) Bl. Index. Mit gest. doppelblattgr. Frontispiz von Reiff und doppelblattgr. Titel. Gesprenkelter Pp.-Bd. der Zeit mit Papierrückenschild. Horn/Schenkling 12340. - Lindner Bibliographie der deutschen ... Jagdliteratur 11.1171.02. - Steffi Windelen, Mäuse, Maden, Maulwürfe. Zur Thematisierung von Ungeziefer im 18. Jhdt. (Diss. 2010, Online Version). - Ein höchst interessantes Werk, das auch ?für die Geschichte der Jagdtechnik wegen der Fülle des zusammengetragenen ... Materials von Interesse ist? (Kurt Lindner). BERKELEY, GEORGE. - [THE PERCEPTUAL RELATIVITY]
London, Printed by G. James, for Henry Clements, 1713. 8vo. Contemporary marbled full calf boards, prettily rebacked in period style with gilt title-label, raised bands and gilt ornamentations to spine. During the re-backing, new end-papers have been inserted, but the original front end-paper , containing old owners' inscriptions, has been preserved and is still withbound. Three old owners' names to title-page, two of them crossed out. The title-page had been repaired at the outer margin, affecting three letters in the last three lines of the subtitle (To open a Method for rendering the/ SCIENCES more easy, useful, and/ compensious), namely the "he" in "the" and the "d" in "and" as well as part fo the double-ruled border, which has been drawn up again. The final leaf with a somewhat crode repair causing loss of some words towards the hinge. A small hole in A3, not repaired. A bit of brownspotting, mostly at beginning and end. With its flaws, still and overall acceptable copy of this extremely rare title. (10), 166 pp. ¶ The very scarce first edition of Berkeley's other magnum opus, his great work of metaphysics, second in importance only to his "Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge" (1710). The present work is not only a popularized version of the "Treatise", though it is a fact that it was more widely studied and more easily understood - being written as an almost Platonian dialogue between Hylas (Greek for "matter" - thought to be the representative for John Locke) and Philonous (Greek for "the lover of reason" - Berkeley's spokesman) - it also constitute … [Click Below for Full Description]

NEWTON, Sir Isaac.
Cambridge: [Cornelius Crownfield at the University Press], 1713. The important second edition of "the greatest work in the history of science" (PMM). This is a fine copy in an unrestored contemporary binding. The Principia elucidates the universal physical laws of gravitation and motion which lie behind phenomena described by Newton's predecessors Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler. Newton establishes the mathematical basis for the motion of bodies in unresisting media (the law of inertia); the motion of fluids and the effect of friction on bodies moving through fluids; and, most importantly, sets forth the law of universal gravitation and its unifying role in the cosmos. "For the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motion of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens ... It was this grand conception that produced a general revolution in human thought, equalled perhaps only by that following Darwin's Origin of Species" (PMM). Published twenty-six years after the first, this second edition of Newton's Principia was printed at the Cambridge University Press, which Richard Bentley had recently revived. Edited by Roger Cotes (1682-1716), it contains his important preface in which he attacks the Cartesian philosophy "and refutes an assertion that Newton's theory of attraction is a causa occulta" (Babson). There is also a second preface by Newton, and substantial additions, the chapters on the lunar theory and the theory of comets being much enlarged. But the most important addition is the Scholium generale, which appears here in print for the first t … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Puckle
London: For The Author, 1713. Privately printed 'for the author', this is the third edition of this work. With the bookplate of one Marcus Steinman Kemmis to the front pastedown. Kemmis matriculated at Oxford in 1885 for his degree. He was ordained as the Archbishop of York in 1891 and was also the curate of Pitsmoor, Sheffield. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. With a portrait frontispiece of James Puckle . Collated using the copy on ECCO, appears complete. . This work was first published in 1711 and contains a series of prose dialogues whereby a young man describes members of his club to his father. The work provides an alphabetical sequence of stereotypical characters from a 'Theophrastian' sense. Examples include Antiquary, Rake, Youth and Zanny. (Oxford DNB) James Puckle was an English inventor, lawyer and writer. He is chiefly remembered for his invention of the defence gun, better known as the Puckle gun. In full calf binding with gilt stamping to the boards and spine. Externally, worn, with the gilt fading and rubbing to the extremities, joints and spine. Loss to the head and tail of boards and spine, particularly to the backstrip. Work has ben rebacked with original boards and parts of backstrip preserved. In the early 1600s, the bishop-prince commissioned Basilius Besler to create a catalogue of his garden and thus "Hortus Eystettensis" was produced. --- Besler’s work, which depicted over 1100 specimens, is still widely considered one of the best botanical works ever created. Most of the plants depicted were drawn at their actual size. The first edition of the work was printed in 1613 and consisted of only about 300 copies. Hortus Eystettensis is truly a masterpiece and one of the most comprehensive and alluring botanical works ever produced. In the preface to an 1806 edition, Franz Seraph Widmann said ".by reason of.the magnificence of its engravings, [this work] deserves to rank high among the rarest works of its kind." --- The work is in excellent condition overall. [x], 166 pp. The first edition in old leather boards, new spine with 5 raised bands and gilt designs in the compartments, black/gilt spine label. Very attractive renewed full leather binding. New endpapers. First blank has corners restored, 2 old ownership inscripts, title repaired with some slight loss to the subtitle, a number of ownership inscripts, A3 (the Preface) has a small hole affecting a few letters on the verso, last leaf has a corner repair and old lack in the text that has been repaired but not restored, otherwise occasional foxing and small discolorations, paper is strong and clean, binding is very sturdy. Very scarce copy of this important first edition on metaphysics and idealism. Taking the form of a dialogue, the book was written as a response to the criticism Berkeley experienced after publishing A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge.Three important concepts discussed in the Three Dialogues are perceptual relativity, the conceivability/master argument and Berkeley's phenomenalism. Perceptual relativity argues that the same object can appear to have different characteristics (e.g. shape) depending on the observer's perspective. Since objective features of objects cannot change without an inherent change in the object itself, shape must not be an objective feature. ont> T Warner: London. Ont> T Warner: London, 1713 Book. VERY GOOD thoug. Hardcover. First edition. A very scarce first edition of this response to Sir Robert Walpole's 'Short History of Parliament' by eccentric bookseller John Dunton. This was Dunton's final work before his death. Dunton was an English bookseller and author. He founded the successful 'The Athenian Gazette' otherwise known as 'Casuistical Mercury' which was the first popular periodical in England with the longevity of seven years in print. Readers would send their queries on any topic which were answered by the 'Athenian Society', a club purported to be learned men who met at Smith's Coffee House. The 'Athenian Society' comprised of Dunton, Wesley and Richard Sault. Dunton made great contributions to the Whig propaganda of his time and his eccentricity and experimentation in the literary form formed quite the legacy. Sir Robert Walpole was a British statesman, who is regarded as the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain. This work is John Dunton's response to his 'Short History of Parliament. ' Condition: Disbound, lacking the front and rear boards. The remaining spine is rubbed, with the loss to the head and tail. Loss to the title page to the tail. Offsetting to the rear pages. Spotting to the fore-edge. Evidence of worming to the bottom of the pages, with a small hole affecting all of the pages, though not the text. Internally, firmly bound. Edition Originale posthume, éditée par l'Abbé de Vallement, de ce récit de voyage à travers les provinces de l'est et du sud de la France, présenté sous la forme des lettres d'un fils à son père. BERNOULLI, Jacob
Impensis Thurnisiorum Fratum, Basel, 1713. First edition, an exceptionally fine copy, rare in this condition. ? PMM 179; Dibner 110; Evans 8; Grolier/Horblit 12; Sparrow 21; Norman 216. He warns against speaking ill of others (la médisance), of the dangers of confiding in even one's closest friends, and against promising more than one can deliver, while urging discretion when confided in by others ("silence and patience are the courtier's most useful virtues" (p. 29). Above all (he advises the ambitious courtier), make yourself known to the powerful, and be at their service; cultivate them assiduously, but with tact. Perspicacious character vignettes of the different types of princes are joined with advice on how best to handle each type. Positions managing princely finances are dangerous, cautions Bone, for they lead to temptation, or at the very least to jealousy and calumny. Strategic embellishment of the truth is another important skill for which the author provides precise recipes (if a person is stingy, just call him economical, if a drunkard, say that he is gay and loves good company, i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pérez, Manuel.
por Francisco de Rivera Calderon, 1713. The first work in this volume is a handbook for priests with Nahuatl speakers as parishioners; it contains a summary of "the five sacraments that ministers of the gospel administer here in America. With all the moral cases that occur among Indians." => Principally in Spanish, it has the prescribed responses of the parishioners in Nahuatl and there is an emphasis on the cultural and language problems inherent in administering the sacraments to the Indians. It was a work frequently found in the estate inventories of parish priests (see Taylor, Magistrates of the Sacred, pp. 156-57). The second work is a Nahuatl grammar, this being its only colonial-era edition. Pérez was a professor of Nahuatl at the Royal University of Mexico and one of the country's leading experts in the period 1675-1725. Provenance: 18th-century signature on title-page of Joseph Antonio del Moral (canon of the Cathedral in Puebla); in 1779 given by the executor of his estate to the Franciscan monastery in Tehuacan de las Grandes with a commemorative bookplate on front pastedown and the monastery's marcas de fuego on the top and bottom edges of the closed volume (the monastery's library was secularized in the 1860s). Sold in 1908 by Alice W. Kurtz (American bookseller resident in Mexico City) to the American Antiquarian Society, and later deaccessioned.
