BESLER, Basil.
Nuremberg 1713 - Four engravings with fine later hand-colouring. Framed and glazed, 64 x 55.5 cm. Magnificent plates from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. The Hortus Eystettensis is a pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was begun by Joachim Camerarius in 1596 and, after his death in 1598, completed by Basil Besler, a pharmacist from Nuremberg. A visitor, Philipp Hainhofer, in 1611 marvelled at the eight gardens, each containing 'flowers from a different country; they varied in the beds and flowers, especially in the beautiful roses, lilies, tulips.' The Hortus records this variety and beauty. The book is exceptional in every sense; in its variety and range of flowers, in its size, in its fine quality of engraving. It is also one of the earliest records of flowers from a specific, documented garden. Besler was asked to complete the work by Gemmingen in 1606; the huge nature of the task was clear to Besler and he enlisted the help of his younger brother Hieronymus and Ludwig Jungermann, a nephew of Camerarius. Printing the Hortus may have begun as early as 1607. Drawings were made in situ and from specimens sent by the Bishop to Nuremberg; the Bishop reported to Hainhofer that he had boxes of fresh flowers sent every week to Besler at Nuremberg for sketching. A team of at least 10 engravers were employed to translate the drawings to copperplates. The gardens, along with most of the town of Eichstatt, were destro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Speed, John
London:: By Henry Overton at the White Horse without Newgate London,. [1713].. Later printing. Very good overall. An attractive map of Oxfordshire, perhaps one of Speed's more decorative county maps. It incorporates the arms of the colleges and those of Elfred, founder of Oxford, into a decorative border. Academic figures flank a globe at the bottom of the map and pinpoint Oxford's location in the world. There is a town plan in the upper right with an alphabetical key identifying the colleges and other buildings of note. The printing by Henry Overton, who took over the concern in 1707 from his father John, indicates this is a reprint of Speed's county maps (with additions) in 1713. [Tooley, Dictionary of Map Makers.] 20.5 x 15". Original color touched up. Small crack in printers plate visible 1 1/2" above the right hand corner. Left hand & top center margin with some restoration.

Bentley, Richard
London: John Morphew & E. Curl 8vo (19.7 cm, 7.75"). [4], 82, [2] pp.. 1713 First edition of the second portion of one of the best-known responses to Anthony Collins's landmark Discourse of Free-Thinking. Bentley here takes up where he left off in the first part of the Remarks (considered a crushing rebuttal of Collins's treatise, and of deism as interpreted in the Discourse), moving on to assess many of the citations and classical references from p. 90 onwards of Collins's work. Writers whose words Bentley feels Collins misrepresented include Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Plutarch, Cato, and Cicero. Recent marbled paper–covered boards, front cover with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Faint crease lines occasionally visible, pages otherwise clean.

FENELON François de Salignac de La Mothe
Paris: Chez Jacques Etienne, 1713. à Paris: Chez Jacques Etienne, 1713. Fine. Chez Jacques Etienne, à Paris 1713, Pet. in-8 (9,5x16,5cm), relié. - First edition, scarce Binding in full burgundy morocco signed XIXth Chambrolle mid-Duru. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale, rare. [Click Below for Full Description]

Joutel, Henri
Paris: Chez Estienne Robinot..., 1713. xxxiv,386pp. plus large folding map. 12mo. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards. Ink notations on front endpapers, light scattered foxing. Map is bright and fresh. Very good. One of the premiere accounts of La Salle's tragic final voyage, compiled from the diary of his close subordinate. The party embarked in 1684, ostensibly to establish a French base at the mouth of the Mississippi as headquarters for operations, but as well to push as far as possible into the region in order to gain a foothold against the Spanish. In fact, and via a conscious deceit, the base was established at Espiritu Santo Bay in Texas, where the party spent two years making excursions into the surrounding territory. When expected reinforcements failed to appear, La Salle and his men determined to return to Canada via the Mississippi; however, a member of the expedition assassinated La Salle when they reached the Trinity River, and the company split up. Some of the survivors, including Joutel, pressed on, reaching Canada by way of the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers. Joutel's diary passed to other hands prior to publication, and the present edition, edited by De Michel, is somewhat abridged. It was published to counter the errors in Tonti's DERNIERES DECOUVERTES... (1697). The complete journal was not published until 1878, as part of Margry's compilation. Joutel's JOURNAL is one of the major works of the period on the region, and "of the three narratives of this journey, those of Joutel, Cavelier, and Douay, the first is by far the best" (Francis Par … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Gardens) Dezallier d'Argenville, Antoine Joseph
Paris: Jean Mariette, ruë saint Jacques, aux Colonne d'Hercule, 1713. "Nouvelle [i.e., third?] edition", expanded. 38 engraved plates, many double-page, some folding) by Jean Mariette, after designs by Alexandre Le Blond. [8], 293, [15] pp. 1 vols. 4to. Contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, preserving original spine and endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Philip, Earl de Grey; and of Nelson A. Rockefeller. Dezallier's (1680-1765) "La Theorie et la Pratique du Jardinage" (first published in 1709) is an important book on the theoretical aspects of eighteenth-century gardening. "The bibliography ... is complicated by the fact that the work was at first published anonymously, then under initials, then as by Alexnadre Le Blond, who furnished the designs for some of the illustrations. As there were a good many editions, and as the names Dezallier d'Argenville and Le Blond (together) may be listed at five diffeent places in dictionary catalogues, it is not easy to bring together complete information. There were editions of 1711, 1715, 1719, 1722, 1737, 1747, 1760, and 1777 ..." (Hunt Catalogue). The "Avis sur Cette Nouvelle Édition" (pp. iii & iv) compares this edition with the first, noting the expansion of both text and plates: 6 new plates for this new edition, and a text expanded by over a third from the first.
