(Fleetwood, William, attrib.)
London: Sam. Buckley, 1713. Early Edition. 8vo. 128pp. Bound in later marbled paper wrappers. Woodcut vignette on the title and another above the colophon, Woodcut chapter heading and initial at the beginning of the Life. St Winifred, or St. Gwenfrewy, Abbess of Trefynnon and of Gwythenn,(d. 600 AD), was honored from early times in Wales as a saint. In 1136 her relics were translated to her shrine at the Benedictine Monastery in Shrewsbury. Two years later, her Life was written in Latin by Robert, Prior of Shrewsbury (d. 1167). Robert's Life was translated by 'J.F.' (probably John Falconer) in 1635, republished in 1712. Bishop William Fleetwood thought the translation so poor that he published this translation the following year, hence the statement 'Second Edition' on the title page. The removal of St. Winifred's relics to Shrewsbury was the basis for the first of the Brother Cadfael tales by Edith Pargeter, 'Morbid Taste for Bones'. Traces of foxing else a fine copy. ESTC T73725. Fine.

Rückenschild, 3seitiger Farbschnitt (etwas verblasst) Cornell S.243 Rosenthal 4035 Grässe S.64 Ackermann I/437: "G., eines Goldschmids Sohn zu Husum, war Superintendens zu Parchim, und soll als ein Schenck-Wirt 1713 gestorben sein. (Jöcher)." Hayn/Gotendorf III, 200: "Sehr selten!" Stempel u … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reliure originale / Hardcover / Original 18th century half leather with spinelabels in protective Mylar. Very good condition with some minor signs of wear to the corners. Bindings are all firm and strong. Very Rare Edition ! Exlibris / Bookplate from Ex. Bibliotecha Warclanensi in each volume to pastedown engraved by S. Halle. Jacques le fataliste et son maître. Précédé d'un hommage aux mânes de l'auteur par M. Meister de ZurichThe main subject of the book is the relationship between the valet Jacques and his master, who is never named. The two are traveling to a destination the narrator leaves vague, and to dispel the boredom of the journey Jacques is compelled by his master to recount the story of his loves. However, Jacques's story is continually interrupted by other characters and various comic mishaps. Other characters in the book tell their own stories and they, too, are continually interrupted. There is even a "reader" who periodically interrupts the narrator with questions, objections, and demands for more information or detail. The tales told are usually humorous, with romance or sex as their subject matter, and feature complex characters indulging in deception. Jacques's key philosophy is that everything that happens to us down here, whether for good or for evil, has been written up above" ("tout ce qui nous arrive de bien et de mal ici-bas était écrit là-haut"), on a "great scroll" that is unrolled a little bit at a ti … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, John, & Henry Overton.
London. c1713-43. Mount size: 560 × 680 mm. Good condition, slighty age toned, slight tear to engraved surface. Copperplate engraving. Henry Overton acquired the famous John Speed county map copperplates from Christopher Browne sometime before 1713. Soon after he re-engraved the maps, using his own imprint of "Sold by Henry Overton at the White Horse without, Newgate, London", and re-issued the maps under the atlas title of "England fully described in a compleat sett of mapps of ye count's of England". Apart from the new imprint, the most obvious changes made by Overton was the addition of engraving major county roads. This is his example of Somerset.

BERNOULLI, Jacob.
Basel: Impensis Thurnisiorum Fratum, 1713. First edition. First edition, an exceptionally fine copy, rare in this condition. "Jakob 1 Bernoulli's posthumous treatise, edited by his nephew [Nicholas I Bernoulli], (the title literally means "the art of [dice] throwing") was the first significant book on probability theory: it set forth the fundamental principles of the calculus of probabilities and contained the first suggestion that the theory could extend beyond the boundaries of mathematics to apply to civic, moral and economic affairs. The work is divided into four parts, the first a commentary on Huygens's De ratiociniis in ludo aleae (1657), the second a treatise on permutations (a term Bernoulli invented) and combinations, containing the Bernoulli numbers, and the third an application of the theory of combinations to various games of chance. The fourth and most important part contains Bernoulli's philosophical thoughts on probability: probability as a measurable degree of certainty, necessity and chance, moral versus mathematical expectation, a priori and a posteriori probability, etc. It also contains his attempt to prove what is still called Bernoulli's Theorem: that if the number of trials is made large enough, then the probability that the result will lie between certain limits will be as great as desired" (Norman). This was the first statement of the law of large numbers. ❦ PMM 179; Dibner 110; Evans 8; Grolier/Horblit 12; Sparrow 21; Norman 216. "In the first Part (pp. 2-71) Jakob Bernoulli complemented his reprint of Huygens's tract by extensive annotations whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Exquemelin (Esquemeling, Exquemeling, or Oexmelin), Alexandre Olivier (c1645-1707)
Paris: Chez les T'Serstevens, 1713 2 volumes: [i-x]+448+[16] pages with illustrations, 2 folding maps and index; [iv]+285+[16] pages with illustrations, folding map and index. Duodecimo (6 1/2" x 4 1/4") bound early calf with labeled spines. From the Society of Writers to the Signet. (European Americana 713/77) (this edition not in Sabin) Early French edition. Rare French edition of one of the most famous books of the period, Exquemelin's account of the adventures, life, morals and customs of the pirates roaming the seas, together with a full description of the Caribbean where they mainly operated. The French edition was, just like the Dutch edition directly based on the original manuscript, and was adapted by Thomas de Frontigniers. Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin called Oexmelin by the French, was a chemist of French Protestant origin who spent several years with the pirates as a ship's surgeon. He took part in their daring exploits, like the expeditions of the notorious English buccaneer Henry Morgan (called John in the book) including his raid on Maracaibo in 1669, or a year later his attack on Panama. The first edition of Exquemelin's eye witness account was published in Dutch in Amsterdam by Jan ten Hoorn in 1678, an edition so rare that it long escaped bibliographers. Exquemelin, who once before, in 1672, had shortly been in Amsterdam, returned there in 1677 to take the 'chirurgijn' exams he sorely needed to exercise this profession at Jamaica, where he had settled, and in 1679 he made his last 'proof'. Meanwhile he also offered his manuscript to the publisher's Ten Ho … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHLICK, Franz Heinrich, Graf von Bassano und Weiskirchen.
Salzburg: Johann Joseph Mayr, 1713. Folio, with three engraved map plates; rather dusted, especially at beginning and end, some wear to lower margins at start and a few pages waterstained; recent quarter dark calf and marbled boards. Rare: with little-known and unusual cartographic depictions of New Holland. This is an unusually lavish presentation of a thesis, presented at Salzburg University by the exotically titled Count Schlick. Two of his complex and interesting maps encompass the discoveries of the previous century both of Australia and the Pacific in general, while a third plate has three different projections of the world map. A copy of the book handled by us a few years ago had a frontispiece which is not present here. The maps are curious but finely executed, set within detailed and highly stylised plates. "Nova Hollandia", in particular, has a distinctive and rather unusual shape, which might be thought to borrow from the classic designs of the late-seventeenth century. They are unusual for a work of this date because they evidently have not taken into account, for example, the Thevenot map. At the same time, a case could be made for relating the map more closely with the more imaginative depictions of the great southern continent in the sixteenth century, with their depictions of "Beach" and "Terra Australis Incognita". There is a curiously outdated depiction here of California as an island (although not confirmed as a peninsula until the mid-eighteenth century, the theory was gaining wider acceptance at the time Schlick's book was published). This is a surprising … [Click Below for Full Description]
