Vermehren, Paul

[Click Below for Full Description]

BESLER, Basilius].
Nuremburg 1713 - Copper-engraving, with fine hand colour. Dimensions: 540 by 445mm. (21.25 by 17.75 inches). A magnificent plate from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. The Hortus Eystettensis is a pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was begun by Joachim Camerarius in 1596 and, after his death in 1598, completed by Basil Besler, a pharmacist from Nuremberg. A visitor, Philipp Hainhofer, in 1611 marvelled at the eight gardens, each containing 'flowers from a different country; they varied in the beds and flowers, especially in the beautiful roses, lilies, tulips.' The Hortus records this variety and beauty. The book is exceptional in every sense; in its variety and range of flowers, in its size, in its fine quality of engraving. It is also one of the earliest records of flowers from a specific, documented garden. Besler was asked to complete the work by Gemmingen in 1606; the huge nature of the task was clear to Besler and he enlisted the help of his younger brother Hieronymus and Ludwig Jungermann, a nephew of Camerarius. Printing the Hortus may have begun as early as 1607. Drawings were made in situ and from specimens sent by the Bishop to Nuremberg; the Bishop reported to Hainhofer that he had boxes of fresh flowers sent every week to Besler at Nuremberg for sketching. A team of at least 10 engravers were employed to translate the drawings to copperplates. The gardens, along with most of the town of Eichstatt, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Exceptionally large armillary sphere with rich calligraphical and ornamental decoration as an image of the universe. The celestial sphere is surrounded in the centre by rings with the signs of the zodiac (outside) and various planet symbols. The names of the zodiac signs and months are engraved in Arabic. Signed and dated by the artist, an "Alexander", in the year H 1125. A nearly identical object is kept at the Globe Museum of the Austrian National Library at Vienna (item GL. 214), there classified as "Persian/Arabic". While simple celestial globes are not uncommon in the trade, elaborate specimens of the present size (53 cms) are very rare. - Slightly soiled and corroded, but hardly rubbed.

[Einband - Missale romanum].
1713. (36), 472, XCII SS. Croce in Venedig (vgl. Thieme/B. 26, 581). - 5 Bll. etwas fingerfleckig (dav. 2 stärker) und mit restaurierten Wurmspuren im w. Rand, sonst innen weitestgehend sauber. [Click Below for Full Description]

London, Printed for John Morphew, 1713.Price 4d., First Edition, 8vo. in fours, (A)-D4, pp[1-2] Title and blank, pp.3-31,[32]advert. Antique-style quarter calf over early marbled boards. Fore-edge and tail uncut, top edge closely cropped partially removing some page numbers; text is unaffected, light foxing. Teerink 587 Anthony Collin's, the celebrated Deist, published, in 1713, his 'Discourse of Freethinking, occasioned by the Rise and Growth of a Sect called Freethinkers'. Swift also mingled in the controversy, yet rather with a political than a religious view. Swift, in making this ironical defence of Collin's, assumed the character of a Whig, as if to identify the deistical opinions of that author with those of the opponents of the Tory Ministry. FIRST EDITION, with 1 emblematic engraving and 17 engravings of buildings, all in the text, slight foxing,pp. [115-] 150, 8vo, late 19th-century citron calf, gilt and blind tooled borders on sides, spine lettered in gilt, the gilt on spine faded, head of spine slightly worn, extra blank leaves bound at end, engraved armorial bookplate of Charles Francis Wyatt inside front cover, with a note (presumably in Wyatt's hand) 'From F.J. Morrell's Lib.1884' This was issued with Henry Dodwell's De Parma Equestri Woodwardiana Dissertatio, a book almost always found incomplete as Hearne was forced to remove an offending passage in his introduction. Hearne had approved (in Latin) of Dodwell as 'one of those honest men who thought it wrong to break an oath to a king' and was, as a result, 'sad to say' ('proh dolor!'), deprived of the Camden lectureship. In fact, the present part of the book has a coherence, as it also contains the Dialogue between Queen Elizabeth and Robert Dudley (Chacellor of the University) on the occasion of her seven-day visit to the University in 1566, and the distinguished provenance of this copy adds credence to this. Both Morrell and Wyatt were distinguished Oxford collectors, with significant bequests by both of them (or their descendants) to the Bodleian. Neale and Bereblock 'produced a set of views of the colleges with Latin verses for each when Queen Elizabeth visited... The original work has disappeared, but a copy, probably the only one, was presented to the Bodleian in 1630. The [1882] volume is a reproduction is a reproduction of the Bodleian copy. D … [Click Below for Full Description]

BESLER, Basil.
Nuremberg 1713 - Pair of copper engraved plates with hand-colouring. Framed and glazed, overall size: 55.5 by 63.5cm. Magnificent plates from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. The gardens, along with most of the town of Ei … [Click Below for Full Description]
