[Late hyacinth] Hyacinthus Serotinus obsoleto colore; [Star-of-Bethlehem] Ornithogalum lactum maximum; [Star-of-Bathlehem] Ornithogalum Spicatum maximum

Eichstatt, 1713. Hand-coloured engraving. Trimmed within platemark top margin and at the platemark on the right, wormhole in bottom margin, otherwise very good. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

[HWV 278]. [Utrecht Te Deum]. Contemporary musical manuscript of three portions of the work. England, ca. 1720

Excerpts from the so-called Utrecht Te Deum, a setting of the liturgical text in English translation composed in celebration of the Peace of Utrecht in 1713. Mostly likely of English provenance. In an unidentified contemporary hand, not one of those identified by Winton Dean in his article "Handel's Early London Copyists" published in Bach, Handel, Scarlatti Tercentenary Essays edited by Peter Williams. Cambridge University Press 1985. Only the second fragment (no. 5) is actually performable. Although only three staves are used, the parts of Handel's score have been copied quite faithfully, the first notes of the flute part of no. 6 being the only notable exception (a possible explanation for the marking "Traversa"). Vocal parts are notated in the respective clef (alto, tenor, or bass). The first two fragments (no. 4 and no. 5) break off one measure before vocal polyphony begins; the third (no. 6) breaks off immediately before the first vocal entrance. "The Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate [HWV 279] are Handel's earliest extant church compositions on English texts, which include occasional errors due to his incomplete knowledge of the language." Bernd Baselt, Händel-Handbuch, vol. 2. "Echoes of the Latin works [from Handel's Italian years], especially the psalms, are found in the earlier English church music... For the Te Deum and Jubilate of 1713 the ceremonial settings of Purcell and Croft are Handel';s formal models, but realized more fluently with richer musical material." Anthony Hicks in Grove Music Online. An intriguing manuscript.. 3 pp. of a bifolium (295 x 235 mm). Notated in black ink on 12-stave hand-ruled paper. Watermark: bend. Short score of three braced staves: top staff in G clef (contains all instrumental parts except continuo); center staff in either C3 (alto), C4 (tenor), or F (bass) clef (contains vocal part, with text underlay in English); bottom staff in F (bass) clef (contains continuo part; no bass figures). With occasional corrections. Contents: [No. 4]. "The Glorrious [!Glorious] Company of the Apostels [!Apostles] Praise thee The Goodly Fellowship of the Prophets Praise thee" [text breaks off here]. 50 measures (of 158). In A minor, 3/4 time. No tempo. Begins on p. 1 and ends in the middle of the third system (staves 7-9) of p. 2. Top stave combines parts of oboe 1 and 2, violin 1 and 2, and viola. [No. 5]. "When thou tookest [!took'st] upon thee to deliver men [!Man] thou didst not abhor the Virgins [!Virgin's] Womb." 15 measures and beat 1 of m. 16 (of 66). In D minor, C-time. Tempo: "Adagio." Begins on fourth system of p. 2 (staves 10-12) and ends at the end of the third system (staves 7-9) of p. 3. Top stave combines solo oboe and unison violins. [No. 6]. ["We believe that thou shalt come..."]. 4 measures (of 29). G minor, C-time. No tempo. "Traversa" written above first measure. Occupies fourth system (staves 10-12) of p. 3. Vocal part(s) and continuo tacet (blank). Top stave combines "Traversa," violins, and viola. Edges slightly soiled; lower outer corners dampstained; small ink stains to margins.

      - 's Gravenhage, Anna Beeck, 1713.Engraving after Hendrik Pola depicting the townhall of 's Gravenhage with allegorical decoations and numerous people in the foreground. With letterpress in Dutch and French. Ca. 45 x 52,5 cm.The Treaty of Utrecht, which established the Peace of Utrecht, is a series of individual peace treaties, rather than a single document, signed by the belligerents in the War of the Spanish Succession, in the Dutch city of Utrecht in March and April 1713. The treaties between several European states, including Spain, Great Britain, France, Portugal, Savoy and the Dutch Republic, helped end the war. The treaties were concluded between the representatives of Louis XIV of France and of his grandson Philip V of Spain on one hand, and representatives of Anne of Great Britain, Victor Amadeus I of Sardinia, John V of Portugal and the United Provinces of the Netherlands on the other. They marked the end of French ambitions of hegemony in Europe expressed in the wars of Louis XIV. - (Small stain in blankmargin). - Fine.Muller, Historieplaten, 3511; Atlas van Stolk 3427.         Recherches historiques sur l'état de religion Chrétienne au Japon, relativement à la Nation Hollandoise.London, Paris, Couturier, 1778. 12mo. Modern marbled boards.

Cordier, Japonica, col. 443; ESTC T147442. First separate edition, in the original French, of a work on Christianity in Japan by the controversial Dutch politician Onno Zwier van Haren (1713-1779). Zwier van Haren tries to answer several questions about the relation between the persecutions of Christians and the arrival of the Dutch in Japan: "Are there still Christians in Japan?" and "Were there European Christians who spat on and trampled on images of Christ and Mary in Japan?". Apparently these were stories that reached (and worried) Europe. Zwier van Haren deals with these question very clearly, however, he uses his information and facts quite selectively, as his main goal is to restore the bad reputation of the Dutch. Some faint thumbing to the last page and some minor waterdamage to the lower right corner of the first three leaves, otherwise in very good condition.

II: [8] ff., 80 pp., [2] ff.. 1713 The first work in this volume is a handbook for priests with Nahuatl-speakers as parishioners; it contains a summary of "the five sacraments that ministers of the gospel administer here in America. With all the moral cases that occur among Indians." Principally in Spanish, it has the prescribed responses of the parishioners in Nahuatl. The second work is a Nahuatl grammar, this being its only colonial-era edition. Pérez was a professor of Nahuatl at the Royal University of Mexico and one of the country's leading experts in the period 1675–1725. Provenance: On the front fly-leaf the late 18th-century ownership inscription of Lic.         [Fritillary or Guinea-hen flower] Frittillaria; [Fragrantr jonquil] Narcissus Juncifolius præcox maior; [Garden narcissus] Pseudo Narcissus luteus

Eichstatt, 1713. Hand-coloured engraving. In excellent condition.

A discourse of free-thinking, occasion'd by the rise and growth of a sect call'd Free-thinkers.

London 8vo (19.4 cm, 7.625"). 178 pp., [1 (blank)] f. (lacking preliminary material).. 1713 First edition, early issue of a controversial work that spawned an extensive debate. The author, a close friend of John Locke and of freethinkers John Toland and Matthew Tindal, was a Cambridge-educated philosopher who, despite the furor over his writings, was acknowledged by his contemporaries as "an amiable and upright man . . . [who] made all readers welcome to the use of a free library" (DNB). His Discourse, an argument in favor of individual logical assessment of Christian doctrine and other beliefs, brought forth vigorous rebuttals by Richard Bentley, George Berkeley, Jonathan Swift, and others, but remains => a landmark work of rationalistic religion. Opinions continue to vary, even in modern criticism, regarding whether Collins's work promoted deism or atheism; he himself claimed that increased independent critical thinking was responsible for the decline in belief in witchcraft. This copy lacks the two preliminary leaves. The catchword on p. 7 is "allow'd." This is the variant issue with a final blank leaf instead of the advertisement leaf. Provenance: From the library of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School; properly deaccessioned. Evidence of Readership: Occasional pencil markings and a few marginal comments in the first third of text. Recent blue-grey marbled paper–covered boards, spine with printed paper label. Title-page repaired with loss of perhaps ten letters of epigraph, with partially trimmed name inked in an early hand, and with very elegant old institutional pressure-stamp; title-page verso with pencilled call numbers; first text page with institutional stamp in upper margin, inked and pencilled numeral in lower margin. Two preliminary leaves lacking. A few leaves closely trimmed at one or another margin; last 20 with very short marginal tears not approaching text. Light age-toning and occasionally a spot; generally, clean; marked as above. An influential work on rational religion with evidence of use.

Remarks upon a late discourse of free-thinking: In a letter to F.H. D.D. by Phileleutherus Lipsiensis.

London: John Morphew 8vo (19.8 cm, 7.75"). [2], [3]–85, [1(blank)] pp. (57/58 omitted in pagination).. 1713 First edition of one of the best-known responses to Anthony Collins's landmark Discourse of Free-Thinking. Bentley's Remarks was considered a crushing rebuttal of Collins's treatise, and of deism as interpreted in the Discourse; the DNB says "Bentley destroyed any pretensions of Collins to thorough scholarship, exposed many gross blunders, and claimed Collins's principle of free inquiry as his own and that of all the orthodox believers. Recent marbled paper–covered boards, front cover with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Title-page with author's name inked in an early hand, dedication with dedicatee's name (Francis Hare) inked in the same hand. Title-page with two spots of light staining; pages otherwise clean, with a very few early inked marginalia.
