Demosthenis Orationes De Republica Ad Populum Habitae: Latio donatae ab Jo: Vincentio Lucchesinio patritio Lucensi, cum notis criticis, & historicis. Ad SS. Dnm Nostrum Clementem Undecimum Pontificem Maximum.

Ex Typographia Antonii de Rubeis in Platea Cerensi, , 1712. Romae, Ex Typographia Antonii de Rubeis in Platea Cerensi, 1712. Large Octavo. XII, 232 pages. Original Hardcover (Pigskin) with contemporary handwritten title on spine. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Small, professional repair to upper spine. Some paper damage with text-loss internally to pages 315 - 320. From the library of Johannes Rust, Trinity College Cambridge. His small bookplate pasted to the dedication page. Contemporary entries in ink on the pastedown and endpaper. Demosthenes (Demosthénes 384?322 BC) was a Greek statesman and orator of ancient Athens. His orations constitute a significant expression of contemporary Athenian intellectual prowess and provide an insight into the politics and culture of ancient Greece during the 4th century BC. Demosthenes learned rhetoric by studying the speeches of previous great orators. He delivered his first judicial speeches at the age of 20, in which he argued effectively to gain from his guardians what was left of his inheritance. For a time, Demosthenes made his living as a professional speech-writer (logographer) and a lawyer, writing speeches for use in private legal suits.nnDemosthenes grew interested in politics during his time as a logographer, and in 354 BC he gave his first public political speeches. He went on to devote his most productive years to opposing Macedon's expansion. He idealized his city and strove throughout his life to restore Athens' supremacy and motivate his compatriots against Philip II of Macedon. He sought to preserve his city's freedom and to establish an alliance against Macedon, in an unsuccessful attempt to impede Philip's plans to expand his influence southward by conquering all the Greek states.nnAfter Philip's death, Demosthenes played a leading part in his city's uprising against the new king of Macedonia, Alexander the Great. However, his efforts failed and the revolt was met with a harsh Macedonian reaction. To prevent a similar revolt against his own rule, Alexander's successor in this region, Antipater, sent his men to track Demosthenes down. Demosthenes took his own life, in order to avoid being arrested by Archias, Antipater's confidant.nnThe Alexandrian Canon compiled by Aristophanes of Byzantium and Aristarchus of Samothrace recognised Demosthenes as one of the ten greatest Attic orators and logographers. Longinus likened Demosthenes to a blazing thunderbolt, and argued that he "perfected to the utmost the tone of lofty speech, living passions, copiousness, readiness, speed". Quintilian extolled him as lex orandi ("the standard of oratory"), and Cicero said about him that inter omnis unus excellat ("he stands alone among all the orators"), and he also acclaimed him as "the perfect orator" who lacked nothing. Ovid's Art of Love (Ars Amatoria), a manual on seduction and intrigue provides (in its first and second books) instruction to men in meeting and seducing women and in preventing others from stealing them. With the poet's Remedy of Love (Remedia Amoris), it completes his corpus of elegiac, erotic poetry, but it is also, in part, a satire on didactic poetry, offering such advise as Don't Forget Her Birthday!, Let Her Miss You?But Not For Long, and Don't Ask About Her Age. The third book offers similar advice to women: Make-Up, But In Private, Beware of False Lovers, and Try Young and Older Lovers. Sexual matters are dealt with at the end of each book, with, for example, the second book addressing the pleasures of simultaneous orgasm and the third various sexual positions, with women exhorted to choose the most suitable after taking into account the proportions of their own bodies.         Miscellaneous Poems and Translations [The Rape of the Lock]

1st Edition London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, 1712. FIRST EDITION, containing the FIRST APPEARANCE of Pope's The Rape of the Lock. "The earliest version of Pope's mock heroic poem The Rape of the Lock, composed in a fortnight during summer 1711, had for nine months been anonymously printed in Bernard Lintot's Miscellany. The masterpiece of Pope's earlier period, The Rape of the Lock (1712, 1714) had its origin in a quarrel between two Catholic families, apparently over the provocative cutting off of a lock of hair by Lord Petre from the head of Arabella Fermor..."The poem... is far from being a mere social satire in which a trivial quarrel is mocked by being presented in epic terms. Indeed, by the time the poem has been thoughtfully read it is not really clear that the quarrel is trivial. The 'Heroi-Comical' in Pope's hands is a volatile mixture: some of its comedy rebounds on the epic conventions that are primarily deployed to mock the foolish and vain. In the shining lock of hair Pope contemplates beauty, reputation, conquest in love and war, anger, humour, and resignation. The political facets of the poem, parts only of the total multi-faceted effect, have recently come more into the light, so that the work has its own angle on historical change. Not only does the poem have many targets, all seen through the prism of Belinda and her lock, but it also has many tones, those of subtle comedy, outright farce, and lofty sadness" (DNB).Pope sold this 2-canto version to Lintott for 7 pounds in March 1712; in 1714 an expanded 5-canto version was issued.London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, 1712. Octavo, contemporary paneled calf rebacked. With engraved frontispiece and half-title. Some light marginal worming, light occasional dampstaining (not affecting Pope's verses). A handsome copy. Very Good.

London: Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1712. Third printing. Pamphlet. Very good condition. Important treatise on mineralogy considered the first useful text in English on metallurgical matters, it is essentially a technical guide to mining and metallurgy which in part speculates about America's potential as a source of rare ores. First published in 1639 in 4to format; in 1679 it appeared in this pamphlet format. The tract contains factual information illustrated by the author's own experiments and includes the following topics: the generation of mountains and metals; the signs of mines of minerals; the smelting and refining of Lead, Tinn, Iron, Copper, Silver and Gold; How true and perfect Gold may be made by Art; How to find Pit-coal; and how to colour with plant dyes.Plattes refers to the possibility of productive mining in the colonies, referring to New-England, Virginia, Bermudas, & c.: "these Mines, if they prove rich, would yield more Gain in one year than their Tobacco, and such Trifles, would yield in their whole Lives." (p5).Plattes was an extremely poor author who wanted to reprint this pamphlet in 'The Treasure House of Nature Unlocked' in 1644, but there is no record of this occurring. The author died of starvation in the 1650s. Pamphlet, 8vo, 22pp. Later single stitch bound with the original holes visible. Light general toning of paper with early ink mark in top corner.         La fausse Clelie, histoire françoise, galante et comique

      - Chez Pierre Witte, à Paris 1712, In-12 (8,5x15cm), (2) 318pp. (2), relié. - Edizione originale. Un frontespizio senza segno. Frontespizio in rosso e nero. Bound in pieno vitello marrone Mouchet e periodo E. Dei nervi spinali lavorato.

Full title: A genealogical and historical account of the illustrious name of Stuart, from the first original, to the accession to the imperial crown of Scotland. Being the Long-Expected work of that Great Antiquary, David Symson, M. A., Historiographer Royal for Scotland. The House of Stuart, originally Stewart and, in Gaelic, Stiubhard was a European royal house that originated in Scotland. The dynasty's patrilineal Breton ancestors had held the office of High Steward of Scotland since the 12th century, after arriving by way of Norman England. The royal Stewart line was founded by Robert II, and they were Kings and Queens of Scots from the late 14th century through the union with England in 1707. Mary I, Queen of Scots was brought up in France, where she adopted the French spelling of the name, Stuart. Her son, James VI of Scotland, inherited the thrones of England and Ireland upon the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. Except for the period of the Commonwealth, 1649-1660, the Stuarts were monarchs of England, Scotland and Ireland until 1707; then of Great Britain and Ireland, to the death of Queen Anne in 1714. .         A Cruising Voyage Round the World: First to the South-Seas, thence to the East Indies, and homewards by the Cape of Good Hope. Begun in 1708, and finished in 1711. Containing a journal of all the remarkable transactions.an account of Alexander Selkirk's living alone four years and four months on an island

printed for A. Bell and B. Lintot, London 1712 - (7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches). 5 engraved folding maps. Contemporary panelled calf, expertly rebacked to style, spine with raised bands in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece Provenance: Thomas Cholmodeley (armorial bookplate) First edition of an important early Pacific voyage and a British buccaneering classic. Rogers, who was accompanied by William Dampier as his pilot, went out via Cape Horn, rescued Alexander Selkirk from the island of Juan Fernandez (making this the source book for Robinson Crusoe , with an account of his experiences), and then attacked Spanish shipping on the west coast of South America and Mexico, succeeding in taking the Acapulco galleon in 1709, as well as other prizes. The expedition went as far north as California, and put into various ports in South America. The maps show the voyagers' track around the world and the South Sea coast of America from the island of Chiloe to Acapulco. The sources for some of these maps include manuscripts taken from the Spanish on the expedition. Rogers's eyewitness account of his adventures provides an important contemporary source for its vivid descriptions of buccaneering life on the high seas. Die Kupfer dieses Exemplars waren früher in der Mitte gefalzt und als Hochformat gebunden, wurden dann jedoch quer (d. h. geglättet und linksbündig) eingebunden. - Schefold, Württemberg 4787-4798 (datiert 1709); Thieme/Becker XXV, 399; Ornamentstichslg Berlin 2092. - Etwas gebräunt u. verstaubt, durchgehend mit vertikaler Knickfalte. Wenige kl. Randeinrisse, Titel mit langem hinterlegten Einriß. Letzte Tafel wasserrandig. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

2 p.l., 124 pp. Small 4to, edition binding of cont. speckled sheep (a few unimportant defects to spine), spine gilt, a.e.g. Stockholm: J.G. Matthieu, 1712. This catalogue - which is of the greatest rarity - describes one of the choicest collections of books and art of the early 18th century, comprising about 1700 books, manuscripts, and many thousands of drawings. The collection was formed by Nicodemus Tessin (1654-1728), a member of the prominent Swedish family and an architect by profession, who was Superintendent of Public Buildings in Sweden. He was one of the great European architects of the late 17th and early 18th centuries; his whole career was, however, limited to his native country of Sweden. His duties extended far beyond building and maintenance: he had to design court festivals and funerals and take responsibility for almost all events of a visual nature in Stockholm. Tessin was also one of the greatest art and book collectors of Europe and bought from all the leading dealers in Paris for an extended period. His agent in Paris was Daniel Cronström (1655-1719), Sweden's First Secretary in Paris and later Ambassador to France from 1703. The first part of the catalogue (pp. 1-52), listing circa 700 items, is devoted to architecture and art in their widest aspects: architecture proper, fortification, garden architecture, works on perspective and painting, ornamental engraving, archeology (including an extensive collection of early works on Rome), interior decoration, etc. The catalogue also describes drawings by such artists as Leonardo, Raphael, Caracci, Poussin, Coypel, and others. These drawings, while briefly described in only five pages of the catalogue, comprise about 18,000 items. The second part - about 800 works - is a collection of books and manuscripts on all sorts of public festivities: royal entries, tournaments and carousels; theater and opera decoration and performances; "fêtes galantes," masques and ballets, fireworks and illuminations; sacred festivities and processions; funeral processions and decorations; and costume balls. This section is very remarkable from a bibliographical point of view as it provides exact descriptions giving not only imprint date and printing place, but also the number of plates. The majority of Tessin's book collection is now in the Royal Library of Sweden and the prints and drawings are preserved in the Nationalmuseum. Our copy does not contain the very rare supplement of 17 pages, which is not present in most of the few known copies (such as the only example listed in N.U.C.). A fine copy. Unknown to Ruggieri. Bookplate of the Fideikommissbiblioteket.
