HOPE, William.
as, also the best rules for playing against either artists or others, with blunts or sharps. Together with directions how to behave in single combat on horse-back: illustrated with figures engraven on copper-plates, representing the most necessary. in-8 piccolo, pp. (22), 197 (i.e. 167), (17), legatura del XIX secolo in marocchino nocciola, duplice filettatura impressa a secco ai piatti, titolo oro al dorso. [Click Below for Full Description]

Rome: Per Francesco Gonzago,1710. Large 8vo (201 x 132mm). Engraved frontispiece, partly hand-colored, title with woodcut device incorporating the "Occhi di Gesu" in a baroque frame, portrait of the author and another of Christ, the latter hand-colored, 8 engraved plates, 2 of which hand-colored (variable light spotting and staining throughout). Contemporary vellum, title in old manuscript on spine (stab-hole to upper cover). Engravings by Franc. Aquila and Arnoldo Van Westerhout. and Provenance: early French manuscript note about the book loosely-inserted. Boffito Bibliotheca Aeronautica Italiana I, 276. The plate illustrating the prose fantasy work "Del Volo Mattina" depicts a bizarre flying machine - clearly in trouble, since it is inverted, with an Icarus-like figure falling from it - based on Bartolomeu de Gusmao's 1709 proposal for his airship "Passarola". Beneath it lies the wreckage of another one. OCLC no. 14267103 At the end of book IV of "Degli occhi di Gesù" (first published Bologna, 1707) Martelli describes an airship and its imaginary voyage. When the present edition of the poem was published, he added the four prose dialogues entitled "Del volo"; in later editions the fourth dialogue ("Mattina ultima") was suppressed. cf. Boffito, G. Biblioteca aeronautica italiana, 1929, p. 276; Venturini, G. Da Icaro a Montgolfier, 1928, p. 272-298. Description: 16 preliminary leaves, 324 pages frontispiece, plates 21 cm. .

Sousa, Francisco de
First edition. Sousa (1628 - 1713) was a Brazilian-born Jesuit, historian, traveller, and chronicler of the Order; in 1655 he left for Goa, where most of his life would be spent, until his death in 1712. The time spent working in Asia, as well as his presumably relatively unrestricted access to information, contributed to the confection of a comprehensive history of the progress of European settlements in Africa, Arabia, and India, as well as the most significant navigations, explorations and shipwrecks, carrying missionaries from Europe to the Eastern posts (China, Japan and Malacca). The work is remarkable in its attention to detail and critical spirit. Given the strategic position of Goa on the Portuguese route to the Far East, this work has many references to China, Japan and Malacca. A third part of this work was written but was never published, the manuscript being preserved in the Jesuit College at Lisbon. "Only the first two parts appeared of his Oriente Conquistado, the third being retained at the College of Jesuits in Lisbon. The first edition with the engraved frontispiece is very rare" (Borba de Moraes). The illustration comprises two frontispieces and two engraved plates, one of the them showing the Orb (Africa and the Middle East) with inset maps of the Middle East and Japan under Jesus Christ, and above Jesuit missionaries, one holding the banner of the Society and the other stepping on a lion and about to slay another -both with a group of locals behind them; the Dedicatoriasshow Sousa kneeling down presenting his book to an Angel, with his des … [Click Below for Full Description]

(15 3/4 x 10"). 3 p.l., xxiv, 1296 pp, [22] leaves (lacking an additional three leaves of a separate index and erratum, which, according to Henrey, are often missing). FIRST EDITION. Contemporary calf over thick boards. Added engraved title and SUBSTANTIALLY MORE THAN 1,000 WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS OF PLANTS in the text. Title printed in red and black. Henrey 1308; Pritzel 8018; Hunt 426. Joints cracked, small patch of leather loss to edge of rear board, corners rather bumped and rubbed, occasional browning (never severe), a little fraying to fore edges (not affecting text), other minor imperfections, but still an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally. This very substantial work is one of the first herbals to be published in England in the 18th century. It is chiefly a compilation from earlier authors, but the woodcut illustrations were apparently made especially for it. Never one to let the truth stand in his way, Salmon is remarkably optimistic in this work in ascertaining curative properties. Henrey (quoting the 18th c. commentator Richard Pulteney) says that "'in detailing the powers of simples, [Salmon] . . . distributes with a lavish hand extraordinary and numerous powers to almost every herb he describes.'" Nothing if not a colorful character, Salmon (1644-1713) was a self-established physician and astrologer who began, without apparent formal education, as a practitioner to outpatients who were not granted admittance or assistance at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. [FIRST JAPANESE BUDDHIST MAP OF THE WORLD].
Kyoto. [1710]. Hand coloured, black and white woodblock print map, 114 x 143cm. Folds into worn paper covered card covers 23.2 x 18.5cm presented in Japanese case. Some repaired insect damage in places, small chip upper right in blank section, some wear particularly on title. 南瞻部洲萬國掌菓之圖 'Nansen bushū bankoku shōka no zu' was the first Buddhist world map printed in Japan. Its popularity and influence was so great that for a period of nearly 200 years after its publication it formed the basis of all other Japanese Buddhist world maps. To modern Western eyes this map appears at first glance as quite confusing. The world as we know it is not shown, the perspective is neither scientific nor even particularly inclusive of the West. It is an Asia-centric view of the world. Europe is included, but only as a group of islands at the top left of the map, Australia and Africa are not depicted and South America appears as a small island to the south of overly large Japan. At the top right of the map a land bridge connects the Asian continent with a not terribly large land of scattered mountain ranges which is now believed to be North America. The purpose of creating this map was not for a scientific depiction of the latest knowledge. Although Japanese map makers would have been aware of European knowledge of the world at the time, having seen maps brought by Portuguese and Dutch traders to Japan, this map continues to follow in the tradition of Buddhist maps with only a glance in the direction of more contemporary knowledge. THOMASIUS, CHRISTIAN (Hrsg.).
(Ohne Ort und Verlag; d.i. Halle, Renger) Gedruckt im Jahr, 1710. (6) Bll., 195, (1) S. Pergamentbände d.Zt. mit handschriftl. Rückentitel. Leicht fleckig. - Erste Ausgaben. Zu 1) (Kirchner 4372; Diesch 22; Curieuse Nachricht, S.6). - Zu 2) Erste Ausgabe (Vgl. Kosch³ 37, Sp.175ff.). – Späteres Wappenexlibris a.d. [Click Below for Full Description]

SACHEVERELL, Henry. -
London, Baker, 1710. 232, 249 (statt 256), 16 S.; 456, 16, 63 S. Mit 1 gestochenen Porträt. Abweichende Leder d. - Vgl. Bibliography by F. Madan (Davies/Keeler 1277). - Fleckig u. etwas gebräunt. 1 Titel verso mit altem Stempel. S. 249 in Band 1 mit einem weißen Folgeblatt verklebt u. teils wieder gelöst, rückseitiger Text dadurch etwas beschädigt. Fehlen die S. 251-256 in Band 1. [2 Warenabbildungen bei antiquariat.de]

Lilly's continuation of Style's work, "a useful guide to modern practice decisions collected at a time when the law reports were somewhat thin or non-existent", in John Baker's words, anticipating Lilly's like titled work published as late as 1747. Contemporary calf, later paper labels, rubbed, some ink staining to the boards, light browning, yet a good usable set; the Taussig copy. Printed by John Nutt . . . for Charles Harper [etc.], London, 1710.
