SENEX, John (1678-1740)
London, 1710. Engraved map on two sheets joined, hand-coloured in outline. Expert repairs to the side margins, with minor losses to the neat line and gradients in expert facsimile. An early and important large-scale English map of North America. This decorative map provided the English speaking world with a highly detailed depiction of North America and one of the earliest large-scale English maps of the region. The area covered includes the Hudson's Bay and Arctic regions, as well as the explored portions of the American west. Dedicated to Anthony Hammond, Commissioner in Her Majesty's Navy (whose arms appear on the map below the decorative cartouche), the map incorporates data from Guillaume De L'Isle's landmark mapping of the region (his 'Carte du Mexique et de la Floride' in particular). Senex, however, also made significant improvements to the earlier maps, particularly in his depictions of the Great Lakes region as well as the lower Mississippi delta: the result is probably the most accurate English depiction of its time. There is also much valuable textual information given on the map, including Native American place names, and notes on the discovery of many remote areas, most notably Lahontan's mythical Long River. The present example is an intermediate state between Stevens & Tree A and B; i.e. without John Maxwell's imprint but before the addition of the Bowles imprint.Degrees of Latitude pp.110-113; Stevens & Tree, "Comparative Cartography" 61a, in Tooley, The Mapping of America ; Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast 495; Wheat, Mapping the Transmissi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CONGREVE, William (1670-1729)
First Collected Edition . Large and Thick Paper Copy. 3 vols, 8vo, [24]pp, pps 1-492, [16]pp, pps 509-832, [6]pp, pps 833-1135, contemporary English red morocco gilt with French fillet borders with a small tulip at each corner, the spines fully gilt with small tulips, a saltire cross made of a broken line in each compartment, and a distinctive acorn tool, the title and volume number tooled direct to the leather of the second and third compartments, marbled endpapers, aeg. An unidentified heraldic bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Signature of "John Fletcher" (no relation - that I know of!) on front fly of vol.1. Very fine condition. The heraldic bookplate, which has so far defied identification, contains a lozenge-shaped shield, denoting a lady, and the motto "Spectamur Agendo", which we take to be a mistake on the part of the engraver for "Spectemur Agendo". This, together with various other similarities, and the supporters, two lions embattled, seems to indicate a member of the family of Boyle, earls of Shannon.

LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm.
Berlin: Johann Christian Papen, 1710. First edition, rare, of this milestone in computer history, Leibniz's description of his famous calculating machine, the first stepped-drum calculator, and the first machine that could perform multiplication and division. "Leibniz studied Morland's and Pascal's various designs and set himself the task of constructing a more perfect and efficient machine. To begin with, he improved Pascal's device by adding a stepped-cylinder to represent the digits 1 through 9 ... In 1694, Leibniz built his calculating machine, which was far superior to Pascal's and was the first general purpose calculating device able to meet the major needs of mathematicians and bookkeepers" (Rosenberg, The Computer Prophets, p 48). "[He] invented a device now known as the Leibniz wheel and still in use in some machines . The mechanism enabled him to build a machine which surpassed Pascal's in that it could do not only addition and subtraction fully automatically but also multiplication and division. Leibniz's device enabled his machine to perform the operation of multiplication automatically by repeated additions. His idea was apparently re-invented in 1820 by Charles Xavier de Colmar" (Goldstine, The Computer from Pascal to Neumann, p. 7). Although Leibniz demonstrated his machine before the Royal Society and elsewhere, no description of it appeared in print until in the present form. It is contained in the first volume of the journal of the Berlin Academy of Science, which Leibniz founded. Although the volume is naturally present in some institutional holdings, it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Unknown
ont> Printed and Sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster : London, 1710 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A very scarce first edition of this unusual poem, penned by an unknown eighteenth century poet. The work is a political allegory, exploring the speaker Calidor's attempts to woo Mira. Calidor, the speaker is intrigued by Mira, a female who is in mourning as her suiter Candor has recently been killed by Calidor. She is also mourning the absence of her friend Sacer, whom has recently been imprisoned by Calidor. Calidor compares himself favourably to Candor and says that despite his death 'There yet Ramins a Lover who for You/ Shall all that's in his power ever do. ' He promises to leave Amalea Calidor as he caused her bereavement, 'That since of Candor I Did you bereave,/ Amalea Calidor to you thou'd Leave'. Calidor describes his life in court, and his service to Serena, of Alba, likely to be Queen Anne. He promises that if Mira were to choose him, he would leave his active service. It has been suggested that Calidor could be associated with a range of eighteenth century courtiers, one of whom being Thomas, first Earl of Wharton. The author of this work is unknown. It has been attributed to Matthew Prior and Elkanah Settle. However, most recent scholars refute the claims that this is the work of Prior and feel that Settle is also an unlikely candidate. Foxon C384. An intriguing and uncommon poem. Collated, complete. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, smart with patches of rubbing to the paper covered boards. Sousa, Francisco de
First edition. Sousa (1628 - 1713) was a Brazilian-born Jesuit, historian, traveller, and chronicler of the Order; in 1655 he left for Goa, where most of his life would be spent, until his death in 1712. The time spent working in Asia, as well as his presumably relatively unrestricted access to information, contributed to the confection of a comprehensive history of the progress of European settlements in Africa, Arabia, and India, as well as the most significant navigations, explorations and shipwrecks, carrying missionaries from Europe to the Eastern posts (China, Japan and Malacca). The work is remarkable in its attention to detail and critical spirit. Given the strategic position of Goa on the Portuguese route to the Far East, this work has many references to China, Japan and Malacca. A third part of this work was written but was never published, the manuscript being preserved in the Jesuit College at Lisbon. "Only the first two parts appeared of his Oriente Conquistado, the third being retained at the College of Jesuits in Lisbon. The first edition with the engraved frontispiece is very rare" (Borba de Moraes). The illustration comprises two frontispieces and two engraved plates, one of the them showing the Orb (Africa and the Middle East) with inset maps of the Middle East and Japan under Jesus Christ, and above Jesuit missionaries, one holding the banner of the Society and the other stepping on a lion and about to slay another -both with a group of locals behind them; the Dedicatoriasshow Sousa kneeling down presenting his book to an Angel, with his des … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOPE, William.
as, also the best rules for playing against either artists or others, with blunts or sharps. Together with directions how to behave in single combat on horse-back: illustrated with figures engraven on copper-plates, representing the most necessary. in-8 piccolo, pp. (22), 197 (i.e. 167), (17), legatura del XIX secolo in marocchino nocciola, duplice filettatura impressa a secco ai piatti, titolo oro al dorso. [Click Below for Full Description]

Engraved frontispiece, partly hand-colored, title with woodcut device incorporating the "Occhi di Gesu" in a baroque frame, portrait of the author and another of Christ, the latter hand-colored, 8 engraved plates, 2 of which hand-colored (variable light spotting and staining throughout). Aquila and Arnoldo Van Westerhout. and Provenance: early French manuscript note about the book loosely-inserted. Boffito Bibliotheca Aeronautica Italiana I, 276. The plate illustrating the prose fantasy work "Del Volo Mattina" depicts a bizarre flying machine - clearly in trouble, since it is inverted, with an Icarus-like figure falling from it - based on Bartolomeu de Gusmao's 1709 proposal for his airship "Passarola". Beneath it lies the wreckage of another one. OCLC no. 14267103 At the end of book IV of "Degli occhi di Gesù" (first published Bologna, 1707) Martelli describes an airship and its imaginary voyage. When the present edition of the poem was published, he added the four prose dialogues entitled "Del volo"; in later editions the fourth dialogue ("Mattina ultima") was suppressed. cf. Boffito, G.
