" (Dezeimeris). "Bohn experimented on the decapited frog, declaring the reflex phenomena to be entirely material and mechanical, the general view of the time being that "vital spirits" were present in the nerve-fluid. Bohn showed that the nerves do not contain a "nerve juice". (Morton). Bon exemplaire. Buttner, David Sigismund
Leipzig: Johann Friedrich Braunen, 1710. [1] frontispiece, rubricated title page, [6] 314p., [18], Register, 30 plates, many folding; 8x6.5 inch text printed in German, fraktur font, ex-libris bookplate of American zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid on front paste-down, signature of UC Berkeley student of Slavic Languages Benjamin Jack Pooler. Re-cased, probably early 20thC. The textblock (all edges tinted red) is original with two original blanks initial and terminal. This rebind incorporates very old marbled boards with vellum corner-tips, very edgeworn showing card, backed with an untitled binders'-tape spine; adhesive-tape hinges, but holding well. Leaves toned and bear light dust-smear, small pipe-coal burns and an ancient food smear. Expect readers' markings here and there, most especially light pencil and ink marks to rubricated title page including an arabesque doodle. First edition of a much-reprinted item that established the historicity of the Noaic Deluge through fossil evidence; the plates are in remarkably good condition, same toning and discolorations as with text paperstock. We see one short tear where a folded plate, no.7, was bound too close to the gutter...general good condition. Buttner's book on modern scientific proof of the Biblical Flood found in marine life, plants, and the contemporary state (1700s) of the Earth's waters.

MORTIER, Pieter.
Amsterdam P. Mortier c, 1710. Playing card, fine original outline hand-colour. Good condition. A wonderful cartographic playing card in fine original colour. By the early 18th century the cartographic range of playing cards was almost completely dominated by one important family of map makers, the Amsterdam map publishing group founded in 1685 by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). After his death, as his son was underage, the business was continued by his widow Amelia and brother David; his son Cornelis took over control of the business in 1721, and continued it in partnership with Johannes Covens, as Covens & Mortier, on into the 1780s under later members of the families. Extant sets of the cards can be found with a rule-book, bearing the imprint of Covens and Mortier, but it is likely that the cards were first published by Pieter Mortier towards the end of his life. All playing cards are rare: designed for play and being of small format, they were extremely vulnerable to damage from handling, and easy to loose, making the pack incomplete and therefore a candidate for being thrown away, so even individual playing cards of this age are difficult to find on the market and particularly desirable for the collector. Mann Collection, 1125; Mann, Sylvia & Kingsley, David, 'Map Collectors' Circle No. 87: Playing Cards Depicting maps of the British Isles, and of English and Welsh Counties', p. 23, No.11; King, Geoffrey, 'Minature Antique Maps', p.160.

I pergamentskodd marmorerad pappkassett. Warmholtz 344-45. Fiske, Runic literature, s. 55-56.

SENEX, John
London,: John Senex, [c.1710]. London,: John Senex,, [c.1710].. An important map of Louisiana by John Senex after Guillaume de L'Isle, and “the best of the early English maps giving particulars of the West” (Kashnor). It marked the beginning of a cartographic ‘war' between the French and English as each tried to substantiate their claims in America, eventually decided in the Seven Years' War. Senex's map was “the first detailed map of the Gulf region and the Mississippi, the first printed map to show Texas, the first to show the land routes of earlier centuries - De Soto in 1539-40 and his successor Moscoso in 1542, Cavelier in 1687, Tonty in 1702, and the recent route of Denis in 1713 and 1716” (Tooley). De L'Isle's map had provided some important updates to cartographic knowledge of America including the first accurate representation of the mouth of the Mississippi, but it also claimed vast swathes of America for the French. Florida is not even named, but included in Louisiana; he described Carolina as belonging to the French by right and possession; and restricted the British colonies to the east of the Applachian Mountains. Here, Senex restores Florida to the map, and ignores the French claim to Carolina. New Orleans does not appear either. He accurately maps the course of the Mississippi River and its tributaries (the Red, Arkansas and Missouri Rivers) and shows the Niagara Falls, with a note that they are 600 feet high. Senex also shows Texas for the first time following de L'Isle: Mission de las Teijas is marked. The map is also notable for the detail given of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA QUINTINYE, Jean de (1624-1688) - LONDON, George (c.1640-1714); and Henry WISE (1653-1738)
London: Printed for Andrew Bell, 1710. 8vo. [2], xxxvi, 325, [7]pp. Engraved frontispiece and 10 engraved folding plates. Contemporary panelled calf, spine with raised bands in six compartments Provenance: H. Middleton (early signature on verso of the frontispiece); Richard Middleton (signature on endpaper) Influential English edition of the most important work by the leading French gardener of the seventeenth century: based on the translation by John Eveyln. In 1693, John Evelyn translated La Quintinie's Instruction pour les jardins fuitiers , first published in Paris in 1690. "Evelyn's Compleat Gard'ner was not reprinted. This handsome folio volume with its portrait frontispiece and many copper-plate engravings must have been an expensive book to produce and also costly to purchase ... The astute Mr. London and Mr. Wise, however, appear to have realized that a book based on this work and condensed so as to present only the most useful information would be of greater value to the practical gardener, and at the same time have a much wider popular appeal" (Henrey). London and Wise's edition was indeed popular; first published in 1699, at least five subsequent editions were published by 1717. "This shorter version was obviously the main vehicle for the spread of La Quintinie's methods in England, where his influence lasted well into the next century" (Oak Spring Pomona). London and Wise "built up Brompton Park to be the foremost nursery garden in the country. Furthermore, they became the leading garden designers of the period ...
