BERKELEY (GEORGE). - [ESSE EST PERCIPI - TO BE IS TO BE SEEN]
Dublin, Aaron Rhames, for Jeremy Pepyat, 1710. 8vo. Contemporary panelled sheep, rebacked. Title within 2-line rule border, light spotting.. Very rare first edition of Berkeley's magnum opus, a main work of European thought and one of the most important works in the history of philosophy. It is in the present work that Berkeley defines his foundational immaterialist doctrones that came to be the cornestone of modern idealism, profoundly altering the course of modern thought. Along with Descartes' "Cogito ergo sum", Berkeley's "esse est percipi" (formulated in the present work for the fist time) arguably remains the most famous sentence in the history of philosophy.Keynes 5; Norman 196; PMM 176

Steele, Richard; Addison, Joseph; Swift, Jonathan et al
London: John Morphew, 1710. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Recased and respined in new leather with the original paneled calf laid back down on the covers; new endpapers - a very neat job. Modest dampstaining nearly throughout, scattered stains and foxing and, in a few spots, fading to discrete text sections. Browning and staining to some page edges, title repaired along the top edge and trimmed at the bottom, old signature on the top corner - but, overall, a good and legible copy of the scarce first edition and only folio edition. Complete in 271 parts, two volumes in one, the second title stained in the gutter as are the nearby pages. Founded by Richard Steele directly before he and Addison founded The Spectator, The Tatler had less than a two year run, but was enormously influential. Though scholars differ on the precise numbers, Swift wrote many of the pieces, Teerink tentatively suggests verse in 9, 238, and prose in 230, 21, 31, 67, 68, 249, 258. Teerink 531. Size: Folio. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Literature & Literary; Humour. Inventory No: 045444.

In addition to invaluable testimony about the structure and functioning of the Funj government before the fall of the Unsab dynasty, Krump contributes data of unparalleled quality on the organization and conduct of the trans-Saharan caravan trade, the commerce in slaves, Sudanese medical practices, Sudanese relations with Ethiopia and a wide array of often unexpected vignettes of daily life." Other islands shown are Cefalonia, Cyprus, Lesbos, Lemnos, and Chios. The Visscher family was one of the most distinguished of all 17th-century cartographic firms, and a major player in the era now considered the golden age of Dutch mapmaking. In the late 1600's, a period of great geographical discovery, Amsterdam became an international center of the arts and of cartography, with engravers and printers produced magnificent maps and charts of every kind. The fields of artistic production and mapmaking were arguably more seamlessly u … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOGHE, Romeyn de
Leyden: Pieter van der Aa, circa, 1710. Quarto, engraved title-page, six double-page maps, 41 engraved double-page plates; a very attractive copy in contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, neat restoration to joints. Wonderful Dutch celebration of the riches of the East Indies. A wonderful Dutch celebration of the riches of the East Indies in the form of a series of magnificent engravings by the foremost book-illustrator of his day. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was the most significant and prolific Dutch engraver in the second half of the seventeenth century. Here he celebrates the world beyond Europe, partly as a triumph of Dutch colonialism, partly as a spectacle of the distant exotic. The work begins with a complex engraved title, which is followed by a double-page double-hemisphere world map with vignette landscapes in the corners, and maps of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America. The publisher, Van der Aa, also published maps and atlases and these maps appear in some of his other works as well. The maps are followed by the series of forty-one engraved illustrations on forty double-page engraved plates. This wonderful illustrated book has always been rare and has always been highly regarded: 'Ce recueil, rare et recherché, est un des moins connus de l'oeuvre de célèbre graveur hollandais' (Chadenat).Romeyn de Hooghe's illustrations were also used to illustrate a book by Simon de Vries (Curieuse Aenmerckingen Der bysonderste Oost en West-Indische Verwonderenswaerdige Dingen, Utrecht, 1682), but in the present version they are presented as works of art on th … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Mauritius]:
[N.p., but most likely Mauritius. Early- to mid- 18th century].. Manuscript map, 7 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Bottom corners trimmed away, wear and some loss along left and top edge. Light to moderate soiling. About good. An early manuscript map of the island of Mauritius, done in pen and ink on laid paper. On the map, the town of Grande Port is labeled as Port Bourbon - the port was renamed Port Bourbon when the French took over the island in 1710, though the name reverted back to Grande Port by the late 18th century. Plains, mountains, rivers, and other major geographical features are indicated on the map, as are the outlying smaller islands. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.

Köln [d. i. Den Haag], Pierre Marteau, 1710-1711.. [Mischauflage]. 5 Bände. 12mo. 432 (recte: 430); [2], 438; [44], 438; [8], 398 (recte: 396); [8], 453 S. Mit 5 gestochenen Frontispizen. Spätere Pergamentbände; angestaubt, Deckel etwas aufgebogen, Band 1 mit kleinen Rasurstellen.. Bedeutende Biographie aus der letzten Regierungszeit Luwig XIV. Bände 3-5 in erster, Bände 1-2 in zweiter Auflage: Seconde Edition, revue, corrigee, & augmentee. (L'Histoire, No. 312, p. 86). Band 1 ohne die Seiten 23/24, dort jedoch keine Textlücke erkennbar. RAY, J.21
Londini, A. & J. Churchill, 1710. 4to (228 x 175mm). pp. xv, 400. Contemporary vellum, spine in 6 compartments. First edition. "The culmination of Ray's zoological work was the study of invertebrates which resulted in his posthumous 'Historia Insectorum (1710)'. On this topic Ray was dealing with virtually virgin territory. The only previous substantial work on the subject was produced a century before by the English naturalist Thomas Moffet" (DSB XI, p. 317). 'On Ray's death in 1705, the 'Historia Insectorum' was an incomplete manuscript. It was published 'opus posthumum' by the Royal Society five years later, after some editing, together with an appendix on beetles by Martin Lister (1638-1712). It presented a great advance in knowledge, both in terms of the insects themselves, and in the way they were classified - there was to be nothing comparable for it for nearly a century' (M.A. Salmon. The Aurelian legacy p. 100). An attractively bound copy. Some serious browing at the beginning and the end of the book. A rare item which is always prone to foxing due to the quality of the paper.Horn-Schenkling 17729 [Attributes: First Edition]
