PETAU, Denis
Petrum vander. 1710 MAPS Denis Petau Rationarium Temporum Philosophy Pope Gregory Martyrdom Denis Petau was considered, even during his lifetime, one of the most brilliant minds. He sought to improve upon and carry on the works of Joseph Justus Scaliger. This was achieved in 1627 with the publication of Opus de doctrina temporum, which was abridged as Rationarum Temporum later. This work ended up becoming more popular than Scaliger s De Emendatione which covers similar topics. Rationarum depicts historical figures and ideas, both philosophical and religious doctrine. Petau writes about Pope Gregory the Great and his most famous, illuminated death, up of martyrdom . According to the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, this work is a fundamental contribution to the study of ancient chronology. This 1710 edition is notable for the inclusion of impressive, folding maps! Item number: #8323 Price: $750 PETAU, Denis D. Petavii. EMBLEM BOOKS
1710. Folio, quarto, and octavo. 11 works in 12 volumes. Fascinating collection of Emblem books, created at their apogee. The present collection contains more than 1,300 engraved illustrations and emblems; most of the volumes are in contemporary bindings, although one has been elegantly bound by Vivin Fils, and another is in a later, but sensational embroidered binding of high quality. In recent years, scholars in many disciplines have recognized that the literally thousands of engravings, wood blocks, and etchings in emblem books constitute an unparalleled source not only for the study of daily life of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries but also for extraordinary insights into what the intellectuals of the times viewed as a necessary adjunct to heraldry, social life, politics, philosophy, and moral behavior. The English emblem books scanned for this project are cultural artifacts frequently used in the analysis of reading practices, printing history, Elizabethan popular culture, the use of allegory, and the relationship of word to image. An emblem combines a picture and text for the striking presentation of a message. For example, an emblem titled In astrologos alongside a picture of Icarus may at first seem mystifying, but the epigram beneath the picture explains that astrologers like Icarus get into trouble because they are overreaching their human limitations. The emblem text concludes that humans should not inquire into the mysteries that God has reserved for himself. These compact little compositions could be displayed on the reverse of medals, in festival decor, … [Click Below for Full Description]

JEFFERYS, Thomas
1710. London: Robert Sayer. unbound. Map in frame. Engraving with original hand coloring. Measures 24 3/4" x 30 3/4". This scarce map of Grenada by Thomas Jefferys depicts the Caribbean island in splendid detail. It notes the various division throughout as well as buildings, forts, and roads. Rivers, elevation, and other important topographic features are noted as well. Relief shown by hachures; depths by sounding. The hilly island is known as the 'spice island of the west', due to numerous nutmeg producing areas. Extra folds throughout map, otherwise good condition. Thomas Jefferys (1710-1771) was one of the most important and prolific mapmakers of his era with particular focus on North America. Robert Sayer (1725-1794) was an important English publisher of maps, portraits, and nautical engravings. Partnering with John Bennett around the 1760s, the two published the works of well-known cartographers such as Kitchen, Jefferys, Belling, d'Anville and others. This beautiful, large-scale map is an impressive example of his work.

Sousa, Francisco de
1710. Lisbon. Oficina de Valentim da Costa Deslandes. Two volumes, folio (294 x 195 mm). 1 [blank], 18 ff., frontispiece, engraved plate, 895; 1 [blank], frontispiece & plate, 14 ff., 620, 1 [blank]. Contemporary Portuguese calf, raised bands and gilt tooling to spine, red morocco lettering pieces, some rubbing, specially to second volume, still a genuine set in its original condition. Fine example, fresh and clean, with the four plates present in strong impressions, minor worming, unobtrusive mostly, light water-staining to few leaves.- First edition. Sousa (1628 – 1713) was a Brazilian-born Jesuit, historian, traveller, and chronicler of the Order; in 1655 he left for Goa, where most of his life would be spent, until his death in 1712. The time spent working in Asia, as well as his presumably relatively unrestricted access to information, contributed to the confection of a comprehensive history of the progress of European settlements in Africa, Arabia, and India, as well as the most significant navigations, explorations and shipwrecks, carrying missionaries from Europe to the Eastern posts (China, Japan and Malacca). The work is remarkable in its attention to detail and critical spirit. Given the strategic position of Goa on the Portuguese route to the Far East, this work has many references to China, Japan and Malacca. A third part of this work was written but was never published, the manuscript being preserved in the Jesuit College at Lisbon. "In 1710, a Normandy priest named Jean Le Roux declared that no one had yet fathomed Nostredame's peculiar mode of expression. Imagination had led rival interpreters astray. Amsterdam, Dordrecht: Te Dordrecht :Jacob. Pieter Keur; Pieter Rotterdam, 1710. See pictures. Handsome vintage patina. Clasps missing, and two corner hardware pieces on the back board. Some aging, crack marks, rubs, etc to leather. A recent rebinding ha left the work with bright pastedowns/endpapers, modern endbands and whitish edges to the text block (trimmed). Page 122 was folded down, so if folded out it shows the larger size as untrimmed. Missing 1st title page, and the following page (dedication?), last 18 leaves of appocrapha, 4 leaves of illustration, and four maps (two remain) per Worldcat and other ads ($2000). Occasionally lightly foxed, thumbed and toned throughout. An occasional spot mark consistent with centuries of use. Occasional moisture mark at edges, sometimes intrudes to text. There are a few spots that might have been mold in the past, but it seems cleaned (maybe at rebinding) and dry now. Occasional page edge chip. Bottom right corner of text block frayed, was likely dragging before repair, when shelved. Last pages have more edge chipping. A large folio (39 x 23 x 10 cm), handsome State Bible (Biblia Staten Generael), with much of its original brass hardware; includes a large early map of the New World (Baja California is an island). These typically sell for around $2,000, but due to condition this copy is offered at discount. It still wears its original binding, and all four corners on the front board, giving it a nice board to rest on. It was rebound, so the text block is behaving well, with the hinges/joints and spine working. It retains two of its large maps, that are very enjoyable. In researching this Bible, I realized that it's an early publisher's binding in a way. If you google: "Biblia dat is", "1710" , you'll see that they all share this binder. Somewhat fascinating as the oversimplified view of this time is that everyone bought the Bible as a paper stack and then took it to their personal binder. SHAKESPEARE, William.
London: for Bernard Lintott, [1710-11]. London: for Bernard Lintott,, [1710-11]. The Sonnets and longer poems 2 volumes bound together, octavo (167 x 90 mm). Contemporary sheep, unlettered, sides with two-line gilt rules. Housed in a brown morocco-backed solander box. Without free endpapers. Bookplate of Robert Ball. Corners repaired, joints starting at head but holding, occasional spotting as usual, still a very good copy. Effectively the earliest obtainable printing of Shakespeare's major poetry, combining the complete uncorrupted text of the 1609 Sonnets with Lucrece and Venus and Adonis. Benson's 1640 edition of Shakespeare's Poems lacked both Lucrece and Venus and Adonis and its text of the Sonnets was both incomplete and bowdlerised - combining poems, mixing masculine and feminine pronouns etc. - but Lintott referred back to the original 1609 edition of the Sonnets, correcting Benson's mistakes and including the two longer poems for the first time. Volume 1 was originally published separately with a title-page dated 1709; when Lintott completed the second volume a new general title was issued and the dating of the parts altered. The year 1709 was highly significant in Shakespeare scholarship, the year in which Rowe issued his first octavo edition of the plays. As Rowe had not purchased copyright in the poems, Lintott, who was a keen rival of Rowe's publisher Jacob Tonson, quickly issued these two volumes to supply the lack. ESTC T138086.
