1668). Quer-4to (290:195 mm). H von Hohberg [.], one of a small group of Austrian emigrants who settled in Ratisbon and took part in the Opitzian literary movement - an indication of how strongly the movement was influenced by Protestantism" (Faber du Faur I, 166f.). MOLL, Herman]
Sold by Herman Moll and John King, [c1710]., London. Possible proof state of George Grierson's edition of Moll's map of Southeast Asia Engraved map with original hand-colour in outline, on two sheets joined. Fine example of George Grierson's pirated edition of Herman Moll's large format map of India and Southeast Asia, including China and the Philippines, one of the most decorative and sought-after maps of the region published in the Eighteenth Century and the first large scale map of the region published in England. The present map depicts the East Indies from the Persian border to New Guinea and the southern part of Japan, including India, Ceylon, Southeast Asia, most of China, present Indonesia, the Philippines, etc. It is augmented by insets featuring a plan of Bantam (a major port in Dutch-controlled Java); a view of Goa (the principal Portuguese base in India); a view of Surat (an English trading post in India); a plan of Madras, India (a major English base); as well as a plan of Batavia (the capital of the Dutch East Indies, today known as Jakarta). Richly annotated, the map illustrates the extent of European influence and trade, at the height of colonial influence throughout this critical region. Importantly, the map was the most popular and authoritative general cartographic representation of South and East Asia published during this period when the activities of the East India Company (EEC) had risen to the forefront of the economic life of the British Empire. The EEC was a private syndicate that was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1600 that henceforth a … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LONDON - PHARMACOPOEIA]. [ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS].
ESTC T201275 (6 copies); this edition not in Blake; STCN; Wellcome. Rare sixth edition of the London pharmacopoeia, the first edition influenced by enlightenment science, printed in Rotterdam. The sixth edition was the first to use the system of binomial plant nomenclature devised by Linnaeus in his Systemae Naturae. More important was the omission of most of the animal materia medica (various parts of animals which included excrement), theriacs and mithridates. This reflected the critique of the English physician William Heberden (1710-1801), who in 1746 had successfully showed that that the belief in theriacs and mithridates, which were believed to be panaceas, was based upon a number of mistakes. Heberden's critique came too late for the pharmacopoeia of 1746, but the theriacs and mithridates were almost completely absent from the 1788-edition. Among the new medicines in 1788, was Robert James's patented fever powder, one of the most popular 18th-century patent medicines which was used up until the 20th-century.With owner's inscription on title-page and a partially trimmed-off marginal manuscript note on p. 127. Binding cracked at hinges, spine cracked, affecting title-label; front endpaper loose. Slight foxing throughout. Internally still a good copy.

Bassano del Grappa: Remondini, ca 1710. Fine/From the house of Remondini in Bassano, a print that actually pairs two popular images: the "world upside down" and the "dance of death."From the cycle of the "world upside down," we see the donkey that drives a man who labors under the weight of two barrels. The "dance of death" image shows what may be a courtship scene, but the legend tells us that it shows a young man consulting an African fortune-teller while his true fortune--Death--stands at his shoulders.A relic.. 1 leaf, 34 x 22 cm. Two images, each within palm-frond borders, and each underscored with six-line legends in verse. "In Bassano, per il Remondini" in lower center frame. Matted and protected by mylar guard. 1710]. Manuscript on paper in three different hands. Small folio. Contemporary vellum (minor staining), some fingerstaining and light browning but overall a very good copy. Unpaginated [279]ff. [i.e. 558pp.]. Italy, n.d. [ca. An extraordinary manuscript relating to the dramatic events surrounding the Papal legation to the Kangxi Emperor (reign 1661-1722) under Charles-Thomas Maillard De Tournon (1668-1710). Tournon had been given the unenviable task of informing the Emperor of Pope Clement XI final ruling about the Chinese Rites Controversy. Curiously little is known about the author of the present account Ilarione [also Hilarione] Bonaventura Sala (?1661-1723): He was a clergyman from Rome who had been interviewed by the Propaganda Fide in connection with the Tournon mission but apparently not as an official member of his entourage. It may have been his younger brother Nicola Sala, who was a personal secretary/valet to Pope Clement XIth, who proposed him. Sala travelled about two years in advance of the delegation reaching Macao on July 11th, 1703. According to 'Sinica Franciscana' (VI, 367) he made his way to Xiaoshan (near Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province) where he must have been engaged in missionary work with other Franciscans until the moment when he heard that Tournon had been asked to leave China (July 1706). Sala immediately went to Nanjing in order to meet him. Our account ([f.102]verso) explicitly states that he was present when Tournon's counter-decree was published on February 7th 1707. This decree obliged all missionaries under pain of excommunication to abolish th … [Click Below for Full Description]
