STEELE Richard
1710. First Edition . (STEELE, Richard). (The Tatler). The Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff, Esq. London: Charles Lillie and John Morphew, 1710-11. Four volumes. Octavo, contemporary full tan polished calf gilt, raised bands. $2000.First collected edition of the famous early 18th-century periodical, containing the complete run of all 271 issues.A periodical founded by Richard Steele, and often featuring the contributions of Addison, Swift and others, The Tatler was published three times weekly from April 12, 1709 until January 2, 1711. Initially, the periodical addressed subjects ranging from “all accounts of Gallantry, Pleasure, and Entertainment” to poetry and learning. The later issues exhibit a loftier focus, examining proper etiquette, the evils of gambling and the character of the ideal gentleman. In writing the essays, anecdotes and short stories included in The Tatler, Steele assumed the voice of Isaac Bickerstaff, a fictitious character created by Swift and used in a 1708 publication to parody the predictions of supposed astrologer John Partridge. Several other writers, including Steele, took up the joke, but as Walter Scott observed, “… the most memorable consequence of Swift’s frolic was the establishment of The Tatler, the first of that long series of periodical works which… have enriched our literature with so many effusions of genius, humor, wit, and learning” (Allibone, 2232). Expert repair to spine heads. Handsome contemporary binding with light wear.

Xeres tells us that he was from a family of Spanish Jewish origin living in North African Saphia. He opens his book by addressing John, Archbishop of York (John Sharp, 1643-1714) and thanks him for sponsoring Xeres' own conversion. There is also a testimonial signed by seven British merchants who trade in "Barbary" telling the reader that the author (who is here called Jonah Ben Jacob Xeres) was employed by them in their establishment in North AFrica. ...persuaded by them at the age of about 25 that Jesus was indeed the promised Messiah. Xeeres then proceeded to England, they say, where he adopted Christianity with the aid of the learned Reverend Dr. Allix, who himself then tetifies briefly that Xeres is learned not only in the Old Testament, but also in the Jewish Talmud. The degree of the author's erudition is important because Jewish Converst to Christianity were commonly dismissed as being deficient in learning. Some rubbing of edges, title page with small nicks at lower edge Dedication leaf with inscription of William Worsley dated 1753. Rear flyleaf and pastedown with doodles and one inscription in Hebrew [ST10863a]

LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm.
Berlin: Johann Christian Papen, 1710. First edition, rare, of this milestone in computer history, Leibniz's description of his famous calculating machine, the first stepped-drum calculator, and the first machine that could perform multiplication and division. "Leibniz studied Morland's and Pascal's various designs and set himself the task of constructing a more perfect and efficient machine. To begin with, he improved Pascal's device by adding a stepped-cylinder to represent the digits 1 through 9 ... In 1694, Leibniz built his calculating machine, which was far superior to Pascal's and was the first general purpose calculating device able to meet the major needs of mathematicians and bookkeepers" (Rosenberg, The Computer Prophets, p 48). "[He] invented a device now known as the Leibniz wheel and still in use in some machines . The mechanism enabled him to build a machine which surpassed Pascal's in that it could do not only addition and subtraction fully automatically but also multiplication and division. Leibniz's device enabled his machine to perform the operation of multiplication automatically by repeated additions. His idea was apparently re-invented in 1820 by Charles Xavier de Colmar" (Goldstine, The Computer from Pascal to Neumann, p. 7). Although Leibniz demonstrated his machine before the Royal Society and elsewhere, no description of it appeared in print until in the present form. It is contained in the first volume of the journal of the Berlin Academy of Science, which Leibniz founded. Although the volume is naturally present in some institutional holdings, it … [Click Below for Full Description]

[TYSSOT DE PATOT, Simon]
Bordeaux: chez Jacques l'Aveugle, 1710. Duodecimo, with woodcut device on title; contemporary sprinkled calf. First edition (Rosenberg edition 'A'), of this important imaginary voyage to Australia: a 'landmark' in the development of the French voyage novel (Atkinson). Friederich comments that the importance of mining and irrigation to the Australians makes it the only work 'to foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia'.Tyssot de Patot was a well-known Huguenot free-thinker, whose writings were a continual source of scandal: Voltaire thought that he had 'carried the torch of discord into their homeland'. Certainly the antagonistically anti-religious stance of this novel created much ill-feeling. Atkinson comments that because 'open criticism of the Bible is so frequent' he will have to content himself with listing just a few of the more extreme examples.Nonetheless, Atkinson's positive summary gives a good sense of the importance of the work: 'a close following of accounts of real travellers, such as Dellon, Tavernier, Mocquet, and Lahontan. There is nothing fantastic, unbelievable or overdrawn in the descriptions of the Austral continent... the realistic presentation of the story, in particular the detailed account of the adventurer's camp in the Austral continent, the building of a raft, and the descriptions of plants and trees, may be compared favourably to similar passages in the Robinson Crusoe of later date... '.Massé shipwrecks on the Southern continent at '44 South latitude, almost at the point where Kerguelen Island will be found to be on moder … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Bordeaux: 1710": Rouen, 1710. Duodecimo, woodcut device on title; 19th-century grained morocco, gilt gauffred edges. First edition (Rosenberg edition 'A') of this important imaginary voyage to Australia: a 'landmark' in the development of the French voyage novel (Atkinson). Friederich remarks that the importance of mining and irrigation to the Australians makes it the only work of its type 'to foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia'.Tyssot de Patot was a well-known Huguenot free-thinker, whose writings were a continual source of scandal: Voltaire thought that he had 'carried the torch of discord into their homeland'. In the novel Massé shipwrecks on the Southern continent at '44 South latitude, almost at the point where Kerguelen Island will be found to be on modern maps' (Atkinson). Massé and his friend Moret travel inland where they settle in a plentiful and peaceful utopia where they become so enamoured of their Australian hosts that they abjure their faith and their European heritage; it is only when Moret is betrayed by his liaison with a treacherous queen that they reluctantly flee, escaping rather fortuitously by a subterranean river which deposits them close by the original settlement. They remain besieged in the camp for another twelve years before they are finally picked up by a Portuguese ship.'There is nothing fantastic, unbelievable or overdrawn in the descriptions of the Austral continent... the realistic presentation of the story, in particular the detailed account of the adventurer's camp in the Austral continent, the building of a r … [Click Below for Full Description]
