[Dahlberg, Erik] - Aveelen, Jan van den (gravör)
Gravyr från praktverket Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. Stockholm 1710. Sammansatt av två gravyrer, totalt bildmått 24 × 48,5 cm. (Bladet 33,5 × 51 cm.) [Click Below for Full Description]

Isle, Guillaume de l'
Untitled map of Russia. Copper engraving made by Guillaume de L'Isle, published around 1710 by Pieter Schenk in Amsterdam. Original hand colouring. Size: 49,5 x 61 cm. The map spans the area from Ukraine and the north Caucasus mountains, up to Moscow, eastern Lithuania, and just catching the coast of the Baltics. It details the major towns and rivers, as well as the mountain ranges. Guillaume de L'Isle (1675- 1726), appointed Premier Geographe du Roi in 1718, was the leading French cartographer of the early 18th century, and certainly among the most influential. He was known for his prolific output - over 100 maps - and his exceptional accuracy. From his first atlas, published at age 25, De L'Isle made an effort, unprecedented in his era, to base his work on verifiable, current data and to correct prevalent fallacies. Petrus (Pieter) Schenk (1661 - 1713) was a Dutch engraver, globe maker, and map publisher active in Amsterdam in the second half of the 17th century. In 1687 he established his own firm in Amsterdam in partnership with Gerard Valk. Initially they published maps and atlasses, acquiring the map plates of Jodocus Hondius in 1794. Later, in 1701 they moved into the Hondius offices where they began producing globes. Valk and Schenk quickly became known for producing the best globes in the Netherlands, a business on which they held a near monopoly for nearly 50 years. Schenk joined the bookseller's guild in 1711. Price: Euro375,-.

MORTIER, Pieter.
Amsterdam P. Mortier c. 1710 - Playing card, fine original outline hand-colour. Good condition. Dimensions: 83 × 53 mm (3.25 × 2 inches). A wonderful cartographic playing card in fine original colour. By the early 18th century the cartographic range of playing cards was almost completely dominated by one important family of map makers, the Amsterdam map publishing group founded in 1685 by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). After his death, as his son was underage, the business was continued by his widow Amelia and brother David; his son Cornelis took over control of the business in 1721, and continued it in partnership with Johannes Covens, as Covens & Mortier, on into the 1780s under later members of the families. Extant sets of the cards can be found with a rule-book, bearing the imprint of Covens and Mortier, but it is likely that the cards were first published by Pieter Mortier towards the end of his life. All playing cards are rare: designed for play and being of small format, they were extremely vulnerable to damage from handling, and easy to loose, making the pack incomplete and therefore a candidate for being thrown away, so even individual playing cards of this age are difficult to find on the market and particularly desirable for the collector. Mann Collection, 1125; Mann, Sylvia & Kingsley, David, 'Map Collectors' Circle No. 87: Playing Cards Depicting maps of the British Isles, and of English and Welsh Counties', p. 23, No.11; King, Geoffrey, 'Minature Antique Maps', p.160.

Broadside, folio, engraved music with libretto, lightly dusty, has been folded, cut close, inner margin reinforced where it was at some time bound with other items, printed one side, but with a manuscript song on verso. On the verso is written in a near contemporary hand a song which starts "Come come my dear Peggy". This song appeared in print c1720 and is described as " A Dialogue between a Lankeshire Carrier and a Country Maid comeing to London". It is worth considering the possibility that this manuscript version may be a circulated version which preceded the printed version. The printed song is not listed in the British Union Catalogue of Early Music.
