Simon TYSSOT de PATOT
Bordeaux: 1710. Coiffes & coins usés; fentes aux charnières. TYSSOT de PATOT (Simon). Voyages et avantures de Jacques Massé. Bordeaux, Jacques l'Aveugle, 1710.

Melchior Steidl (Innsbruck 1657 - Munich 1727):
1710. Pen, black ink, grey wash and watercolor on paper; mounted; 396 x 201 mm Melchior Steidl was a pupil of the court painter Johann Anton Gumpp (1654-1719) in Munich. Until 1715 he worked almost exclusively for church clients in numerous places in Austria, Bavaria, Franconia, Hesse and Swabia, usually commissioned with the execution of ceiling paintings. Steidl is considered one of the most important fresco painters of the southern German Baroque of his generation. Gumpp’s and Steidl’s illusionism, influenced by Pietro da Cortona and Andrea Pozzo, helped to raise the meaning and autonomy of ceiling painting in their area. Steidl remained a fresco painter throughout his life, faithful to the artistic imprints of his early years. Quadratura drawings by Steidl are rare. Most known drawings by him depict designs for ceiling paintings rather than for their illusionistic framings. Literature: Josef Strasser – Melchior Steidl (1657-1727). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

CLEMENT, Simon.
London: Printed and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster, 1710. London: Printed and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster,, 1710. Octavo (189 x 118 mm). Four works sewn together in one disbound volume, extracted from a larger pamphlet volume with remnants of original spine. Some light soiling, staining and browning, some worming with minor loss to text. Overall good copies. A sammelband collection, comprising Clement's pamphlet supporting the establishment of a non-partisan government, a response to Clement claiming to be the second part of his pamphlet, the anonymous counterblast Faults in the Fault-Finder, and Clement's defence of his treatise in A Vindication of the Faults on Both Sides. In the past Faults on Both Sides has been attributed to Robert Harley, but it is generally accepted that Simon Clement (c.1654-c.1730) was the author. However it does seem that Harley had some role in its publication, and it can be seen as election propaganda for the 1710 election with Harley being the implicit non-partisan choice. Joseph Trapp published a response arguing that the pamphlet was a conspiracy by the Whigs, who saw that their dominance was ending and were consequently urging for a coalition government to keep their power, which Clement responded to in A Vindication. At any rate, the number of editions which the pamphlet and its responses ran to shows the significance of the publication on the contemporary political scene. The four pamphlets together comprise: i) CLEMENT, Simon. Faults on Both Sides... the second edition. ESTC T35447. ii) (Anonym … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROUGHTON, John.]
London: Printed for Jonah Bowyer, 1710. Octavo (190 x 118 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier sew-holes in margin, edges speckled red. Initial and final leaf lightly soiled, some staining to p. 16, central crease to pp. 73/74, occasional close cropping with very minor loss to text. A very good copy. First collected edition, the tracts on the Bank of England and credit previously published in 1705 and 1706, here brought together with a new introductory essay on the constitution. Broughton (c.1674-1720), chaplain to the first Duke of Marlborough, wrote on economics and philosophy, opposing John Locke in the latter and the recently-established Bank of England in the former. His Remarks on the Bank of England, first published in 1705 on occasion of the Bank's request for a prolongation of its original charter, argued that the request should be denied and that the Bank should be dissolved. Broughton accused the Bank of attempting to secure a monopoly of credit in the country, and argued that it had far too much power over the government. Broughton instead proposed, extended in his essays on credit, that a new central bank as a branch of government should be created, which could use credit to stimulate the economy. Broughton held that the circulation of money, rather than its hoarding, was the proper calculation of wealth, and consequently the use of paper money should be encouraged (p. 84). Border with longitudinal and latitudinal information. A richly detailed and very interesting map of Africa. Many regions bear Roman/Latin nomenclature. Southern Europe, the Caucasus around the Black Sea, the Middle East, Arabian peninsula and a small section of India can be seen. The tip of the Brazilian bulge can be seen also. The 'Mare Sargasse' (Sargasso Sea) is shown west of the Canaries, along with another unnamed 'sargasse' lying off the south-west coast of Africa - the knowledge of these ocean gyres indicating nautical and scientific sophistication. Africa's vast size is well captured and reflected through the craftsmanship of the mapmaker. The African continent is subdivided into regions such as Barbaria, Nigritia, Guinea Superior, Regn Macoco and Regio Caffro and others. These, in turn, are divided further. Reliefs such as mountains and rivers are depicted. The region to the east of the Congo is noticeable for the lack of features described in it.
