FUCHS, Leonhart.
Bibliotheca Osleriana 2688; Durling 1710; USTC 602528 (4 copies). Very rare first edition of Fuchs’s "Four books on some difficult questions", a heavily revised version of his Apologiae tres ("Three apologies") from 1538. It is part of a debate on the preferences for ancient Greek and Latin sources on one side versus Arabic sources on the other side; refuting the views of Guillaume Dupuis, Sébastien de Monteux and Jérémie de Dryvere. Fuchs had already discussed this issue in his 1535 Paradoxa medicinae, where he had favoured the classical Greek medical sources and criticized the Arabic physicians and their recent European adherents.Browned and foxed throughout and with a few lines, words headings and paragraphs crossed out, but still in good condition. HASSHU GAFU.
Kyoto, Nakagawa Mohee, 1710. 8 volumes. 8vo (282 x 195mm). With 421 full-page woodblock illustrations of which 213 are related to natural history. Contemporary original stitched bindings, with calligraphic titleslips (preserved in a recent blue folding box). The most beautifully illustrated Chinese book of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Eight unrelated volumes have been published by different authors and artists within a period of a few years (1620-1628). The order of the publication of the volumes is subject to controversy. Each volume has a different title. The eight works are known as 'Hasshu Gafu', but this collective title does not appear anywhere in the volumes.//The single Chinese edition was published in the early 1620's. The books were imported into Japan and issued, first in 1672. Our copy is the second Japanese edition of 1710, using the same blocks. The book is a great rarity. The Chinese edition, absent in all Western collections is unobtainable. Three complete copies of the first Japanese edition have been located. The second Japanese edition has been described by Mitchell, New York City Public Library, p. 289 and Kraft, Berlin Public Library, no. 224. Several libraries preserve one, two, three or four volumes out of eight. The Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale has 3 volumes of the second Japanese edition./According to Japanese specialists, the publication of 'Hasshu Gafu' had a considerable impact on Japanese painters of the 17th and 18th century and is considered as the first great pictorial source on Chinese painting for Japanese artists. The work is composed as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maffei, Scipione
Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. DADICH, Count Francesco.
[Venice, c. 1750s?]. Folio. [32 x 21.5 cm], (1) f. blank, (96) ff., (3) ff. blanks. Brown ink, 26 lines per page. Divided into two parts, final leaf dated to 1751. Bound in contemporary Venetian floral woodblock wrappers, hand colored in pink, green and yellow. Contemporary woodblock pastedowns of stars printed in red ink. Minor wear to spine, pages clean and fresh, script mainly very legible. A mid-eighteenth century unpublished Italian manuscript account of the Ottoman Empire up to the year 1751, written by Count Francesco Dadich (1695-1790), a Dalmatian spy in the service of Venice and a key eyewitness to the political and military machinations in Constantinople during the first half of the eighteenth century. The manuscript is an important insider account focusing on the reigns of Sultans Ahmed III (ruled 1703-30) and Mahmud I (ruled 1730-54) and the political and military setbacks that troubled the declining Empire at that time. Dadich begins his memoirs with a summation of the first four centuries of the Ottoman Empire, treating the Empire's foundation under Osman I (1258-1326), its rise after the capture of Constantinople in 1453, and its uneven domestic and foreign affairs during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, all the while orienting his readers with fundamental information about Islamic cosmology, religion, science, literature, architecture and music. By far the bulk of the manuscript, however, is devoted to a nuanced discussion of the recent political turmoil of which Dadich likely received firsthand accounts or to which he himself was a witness, the per … [Click Below for Full Description]

Romae: Typographia Georgii Plachi, 1710. [8], 974 pagine. Lievi bruniture e alcune fioriture all'interno.

MORTIER, Pieter.
Amsterdam P. Mortier c. 1710 - Set of 13 playing cards, fine original outline hand-colour. Dimensions: 83 × 53 mm (3.25 × 2 inches). A wonderful cartographic playing card in fine original colour. By the early 18th century the cartographic range of playing cards was almost completely dominated by one important family of map makers, the Amsterdam map publishing group founded in 1685 by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). After his death, as his son was underage, the business was continued by his widow Amelia and brother David; his son Cornelis took over control of the business in 1721, and continued it in partnership with Johannes Covens, as Covens & Mortier, on into the 1780s under later members of the families. Extant sets of the cards can be found with a rule-book, bearing the imprint of Covens and Mortier, but it is likely that the cards were first published by Pieter Mortier towards the end of his life. All playing cards are rare: designed for play and being of small format, they were extremely vulnerable to damage from handling, and easy to loose, making the pack incomplete and therefore a candidate for being thrown away, so even individual playing cards of this age are difficult to find on the market and particularly desirable for the collector. Mann Collection, 1125; Mann, Sylvia & Kingsley, David, 'Map Collectors' Circle No. 87: Playing Cards Depicting maps of the British Isles, and of English and Welsh Counties', p. 23, No.11; King, Geoffrey, 'Minature Antique Maps', p.160.

Kol. Berufe

VICO, Giambattista.
Naples: Felicis Mosca, 1710. Naples: Felicis Mosca,, 1710. Duodecimo (163 x 90 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in manuscript, edges uncut. Contemporary or near-contemporary ownership inscription to title page. Tanning and a little spotting to spine and extremities, slight wear to lower edge of front board, some very minor dampstain to front free endpapers, foxing and a few chips to contents, an excellent copy of this scarce edition. First edition of the Italian philosopher, historian, and jurist's fullest statement of the verum factum principle, the first book in the unrealised series of three outlining his anti-Cartesian philosophical system. The second and third books, Liber Secundus Physicus and Liber Tertius Moralis, were never completed for unknown reasons. Liber Primus Metaphysicus "remained virtually unknown for over a hundred years, although during Vico's lifetime it was widely read in Neapolitan academic circles" (Palmer, p. x). It was not translated from the Latin into Italian until 1816, and it was only reprinted in 1828. Vico's writings gained popularity during the nineteenth century, and his impact on the modern philosophy of history, culture, and mythology cannot be understated. Marx cites Vico in Das Kapital and Trotsky quotes him on the first page of his History of the Russian Revolution; Coleridge and Yeats were enthusiastic disseminators of Vichian ideas; and Joyce composed Finnegans Wake using Vico's four-part cyclical theory of civilisation. Liber Primus Metaphysicus contains the first printing of Vico's Latin aphorism "verum esse ipsum factum … [Click Below for Full Description]
