Mary De La Riviere MANLEY
London: Printed for John Morphew. 1710. 8vo, 197 x 128 mms. pp. [xvi], 336, [4] with duplicate page 301/302. Modern binding with red morocco labels, a very good copy. It is not clear when Riviere Manley (c. 1670 - 1724) became Mary De La Rivere Manley, though it might have been when she was travelling with John Manley. Her first book was Letters by Mrs Manley, published in 1696, but which were withdrawn from publication and not republished until after her death. She is perhaps best-known for work, Secret Memoirs and Manners of Several Persons of Quality of both Sexes, from the New Atalantis, an Island in the Mediterranean in 1709. The Memoirs of Europe was the first of two volumes, in which Manley, as a Tory, tried to expose whig corruption with racy descriptions of naughty sexual behaviour. Her ODNB biographer, Ros Ballaster concludes a very good account of her life and publications with this comment: "Manley's plays and prose works were highly successful and popular in her own time, though they failed to secure her the financial and political patronage she craved. The remarkably accurate scandalous and political references in her prose works may now be obscure, but her energetic style and plotting made her an important contributor to the development of the modern novel as a vehicle for entertainment. Her clear-sighted exposure of sexual double standards, if leavened with sexual voyeurism and a taste for the scandalous and perverse, reveals her to be an early exponent of Enlightenment feminism.".   Condition Report Externally Spine – very good condition. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. The Homanns produced a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737, and an Atlas Maior with about 300 maps in 1780. They also issued a special Atlas of Germany with full sized plans of principal cities, school atlases and an Atlas of Silesia in 1750 with 20 maps. Condition: Very good, given age. [Australia; Imaginary Voyage] Tyssot de Patot, Simon
Bordeaux: James l'Aveugle, 1710. First edition. An important imaginary voyage to Australia: a 'landmark' in the development of the French voyage novel (Atkinson), in its original full calf decorated binding. A Robinsonade account, which predates Defoe. It is complete with the ship wreck, exploration, conflict with local inhabitants, stand off and final rescue by a passing ship. It is a reasonable representation of the Australian continent and its challenges, along with a realistic estimation of the importance of mining and irrigation to Australia that "foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia." (Friederich) The title page is falsely dated 1710. In his deep analyses of Tyssot de Patot and his publications, Aubrey Rosenberg has concluded that this 1710 printing, with the armillary sphere device on the title page with the base pointing to the left, is indeed the first edition, and was published between 1714 and 1718. "Robinson Crusoe" first appeared in 1719. 12mo, (viii), 508pp. Bound in the original full brown calf binding, gilt spine in 6 compartments, raised bands, gilt device decoration on spine and outer dentelles.Bookplate of Sir John Dashwood King on the inside front pastedown. Rosenberg "A" Gove, 217-219; Cioranescu 62587; Barbier IV, 1103; Atkinson, 'The Extraordinary Voyage in French Literature', p. 70; Rosenberg, pp. 84-5. A handsome copy in its original binding.

SCHERER, Heinrich (1628-1704).
Munich: Bencard, 1710; Munich: Rauchin, 1703. 2 parts (of 7) in one volume. 4to., (10 3/8 x 8 1/8 inches). 3 Half titles, general title-page, 2 sectional title-pages. 2 exceptionally fine allegorical engraved frontispieces and 31 fine double-page engraved maps. Contemporary sheep (a bit worn). First edition of parts one and two of Scherer's celebrated "Atlas Novus". Containing a series of beautiful maps showing the extent of Catholicism throughout the world. Scherer was a Professor of Hebrew, Mathematics and Ethics at the University of Dillingen until about 1680, Official Tutor to the Royal Princes of Mantua and Bavaria, and latterly in Munich as Tutor to the Princely house of Bavaria. As the cartographer of the celebrated world atlas, "Atlas Novus", first published in Munich between 1702 and 1710 and reissued in a second edition between 1730 and 1737, Scherer is acknowledged for his revolutionary work in terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century. His "Atlus Novus" is one of the first thematic atlases, each part covering a different classification; the first being 'Geographia Naturalis'. "As a Jesuit , Scherer concentrated on the spread of missions around the world Including a number of maps related specifically to the Americas: "Idea naturalis Americae Borealis digito Dei formata geographice proposita", 1700; "Figura naturalis Americae Australis Divino artificio constructa geographice", 1700; "Imago totius orbis terraquei cum suo apparatu ab auctore naturae in suas partes distribute geographice exhibita", 1700; "Repraesentatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

LILLE. MANUSCRIT.
[circa 1710]. 500 x 667 mm. … [Click Below for Full Description]
