New expanded edition the first two volumes with large tables, published at the request of Chancellor. The original appeared for the first time in 1676, it was continued in this edition by René Le Comte to vouchers for the 1676-1705 period, further material collated by Tessereau was completely redesigned for this new edition. Full brown sheepskin time. Back to six nerves ornate coffered and gilded finials, as well as parts of title and volume numbers of red morocco. All slices speckled red. Faded back (no caps and lack of sheepskin). Scuffs and corners bumped. Bookplate pasted on the time contreplats. Major source on the history of the Chancellery in France; it is as old as the monarchy was constituted by the body of Chancellors such as the Chancellor, the Keeper of the Seals, large audienciers, secretary of the king of great college, treasurers, controllers, wax heater and other officers ( Chancery no longer today that the Department of Justice). Tessereau has assembled a valuable piece for the historian of the officers of the Chancery, their functions and prerogatives of the various embassies in the kingdom ... It is more of a compilation and publication of documents of a historian's work, the book is not less important. Chez Pierre Emery A Paris 1710 2 vol. in-folio (26x38,5cm) (8) 787pp. (112) et (4) 553pp. (57) relié

Leyden: Pieter van der Aa, circa, 1710. Quarto, engraved title-page, six double-page maps, 41 engraved double-page plates; a very attractive copy in contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, neat restoration to joints. Wonderful Dutch celebration of the riches of the East Indies. A wonderful Dutch celebration of the riches of the East Indies in the form of a series of magnificent engravings by the foremost book-illustrator of his day. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was the most significant and prolific Dutch engraver in the second half of the seventeenth century. Here he celebrates the world beyond Europe, partly as a triumph of Dutch colonialism, partly as a spectacle of the distant exotic. The work begins with a complex engraved title, which is followed by a double-page double-hemisphere world map with vignette landscapes in the corners, and maps of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America. The publisher, Van der Aa, also published maps and atlases and these maps appear in some of his other works as well. The maps are followed by the series of forty-one engraved illustrations on forty double-page engraved plates. This wonderful illustrated book has always been rare and has always been highly regarded: 'Ce recueil, rare et recherché, est un des moins connus de l'oeuvre de célèbre graveur hollandais' (Chadenat).Romeyn de Hooghe's illustrations were also used to illustrate a book by Simon de Vries (Curieuse Aenmerckingen Der bysonderste Oost en West-Indische Verwonderenswaerdige Dingen, Utrecht, 1682), but in the present version they are presented as works of art on their own, not as illustrations to a text. In this publication they have the imprint of the publisher at the bottom of each plate (in the form "à Leide, chez Pierre vander Aa"); the long explanatory caption at the top of each plate appears in both French and Dutch here, whereas in the De Vries version it is in Dutch only.De Hooghe's engravings depict an enormous variety of subjects - reflecting the lengthy and wonderful list of topics on the title-page. About fifteen of the plates show American or West Indies subjects while most of the remainder show the East Indies and the Far East, mixing numerous features into single engravings, and encompassing peoples, customs, clothing, natural history including plants and animals, spices, views of places including Sri Lanka, Java and the Moluccas, diamonds and gems, boats, fireworks, musical instruments, religious ceremonies and marriages, priests, beggars, tea... A full list of the plates is available on request.

        ILE DE FRANCE [manuscript title].

[N.p., but most likely Mauritius. Early- to mid- 18th century]. - Manuscript map, 7 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Bottom corners trimmed away, wear and some loss along left and top edge. Light to moderate soiling. About good. An early manuscript map of the island of Mauritius, done in pen and ink on laid paper. On the map, the town of Grande Port is labeled as Port Bourbon - the port was renamed Port Bourbon when the French took over the island in 1710, though the name reverted back to Grande Port by the late 18th century. Plains, mountains, rivers, and other major geographical features are indicated on the map, as are the outlying smaller islands. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.

A Bordeaux, chez Jaques L?'Aveugle ?'1710?' (but later). 12mo., pp. [viii] 508. Engraved frontispiece, title-page with engraved vignette. Light age-yellowing, bound in contemporary calf, pitted, smartly rebacked. All edges red. Contemporary marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Owner?'s inscription of Edward Scudamore MD, St. George?'s Place, Canty (probably Canterbury, as an Edward Scudamore was a donor to the Cathedral library there). Simon Tyssot de Patot (1655-1738) was a teacher of mathematics in Deventer. Graesse IV 438.

        [Oliver Cromwell] Olivarius Cromwell

Published by Henr. Neuhusius Fris. Pensionarius Worcumensis, 1710. Engraving. Printed on laid watermarked paper. In good condition with the exception of two skillfully mended tears across Cromwell's face. Very light crease along middle of image. Sheet has been re-margined with laid paper. Image size: 21 ¾ x 17 inches. This remarkable engraving is an early portrait of Oliver Cromwell, one of England's most famous leaders. This is a commanding equestrian portrait of Oliver Cromwell with a panoramic view of London stretching out behind him. Published by the celebrated German poet Henricus Neuhusius this image provides a fascinating insight into the dissemination of Cromwell's image across Europe. Cromwell is memorialized in countless portraits by both English and Continental artists, and his image continued to be reproduced in print until the late nineteenth century. This rare engraving is an early example of the pictorial legacy, which Cromwell inspired. Published for a continental market, this striking portrait depicts Cromwell as larger than life; both his horse and his body are massive in proportion to his surroundings, creating a statuesque effect, which is visually compelling. Cromwell's body controls the compositional space of the image making him appear all-powerful, and he hold's the viewer's attention with his resolute gaze. Early portraits of Cromwell, such as this, are seldom seen on the market, making this a true rarity and a fine collector's piece.

Historia Insectorum. Opus posthumum. Cui subjungitur Appendix de Scarabaeis Britannicis, Autore M. Lister.

Londini, A. & J. Churchill, 1710. 4to (228 x 175mm). pp. xv, 400. Contemporary vellum, spine in 6 compartments. First edition. "The culmination of Ray's zoological work was the study of invertebrates which resulted in his posthumous 'Historia Insectorum (1710)'. On this topic Ray was dealing with virtually virgin territory. The only previous substantial work on the subject was produced a century before by the English naturalist Thomas Moffet" (DSB XI, p. 317). 'On Ray's death in 1705, the 'Historia Insectorum' was an incomplete manuscript. It was published 'opus posthumum' by the Royal Society five years later, after some editing, together with an appendix on beetles by Martin Lister (1638-1712). It presented a great advance in knowledge, both in terms of the insects themselves, and in the way they were classified - there was to be nothing comparable for it for nearly a century' (M.A. Salmon. The Aurelian legacy p. 100). An attractively bound copy. Some serious browing at the beginning and the end of the book. A rare item which is always prone to foxing due to the quality of the paper.//Horn-Schenkling 17729.

. Lipsiae, J.F. Max Salomon, Hirsch I, p.512f. Sein Hauptwerk "ist überhaupt sehr geeignet, den Zustand der Physiologie seiner Zeit kennenzulernen" Haeser II, p.304 - Johann Bohn "experimented on the decapitated frog, declaring the reflex phenomena to be entirely material and mechanical, the general view of the time being that "vital spirits" were present in the nerve -fluid. Bohn showed that the nerves do not contain a "nerve juice"." Garrison & Morton - "The strongly speculative ideas of the iatrochemists came under attack early, especially by the German physician and chemist Johannes Bohn (1640-1718), the anatomical prosector at Leipzig, he accepted the need for chemical explanations, especially concerning the digestive processes. He postulated, for example, that the saliva prepared the foodstuffs for their gastric digestion. For Bohn, the saliva's watery portion extracted salty particles from the food, while the oily and spiritual salivary components combined with the sulphurous parts of the nutriment. The entire digestive process consisted of the disintegration of the ingested material into fine atoms. - For Bohn the pancreatic juice did not appear to boil when combined with alkali and was thus not acid. Moreover, he denied that the bile was of alkaline nature and secreted from the walls of the gallbladder. He correctly deduced that the liver was the real source of bile and also refuted the existence of a nervous fluid circulating in the nerves. - Bohn's ideas reflected the influence of both the English physician Thomas Willis (1621-1675) and the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694). He was one of the most important experimental physiologists before Haller, expressing more sympathy for iatrophysics and atomism than iatrochemistry. Bohn's critique, however, was still only tentative because of a lack of proper methods of investigation." Karl E.Rothschuh, Hist. of Physiology, p.62 - Blake 56; Garrison & Morton No.1355 (1st.Ed.1686).
