A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. Part I [all published].

Dublin, Aaron Rhames, for Jeremy Pepyat, 1710. 8vo. Contemporary panelled sheep, rebacked. Title within 2-line rule border, light spotting.. Very rare first edition of Berkeley's magnum opus, a main work of European thought and one of the most important works in the history of philosophy. It is in the present work that Berkeley defines his foundational immaterialist doctrones that came to be the cornestone of modern idealism, profoundly altering the course of modern thought. Along with Descartes' "Cogito ergo sum", Berkeley's "esse est percipi" (formulated in the present work for the fist time) arguably remains the most famous sentence in the history of philosophy.Keynes 5; Norman 196; PMM 176

The Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff, Esq. [The Tatler]

London: John Morphew, 1710. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Recased and respined in new leather with the original paneled calf laid back down on the covers; new endpapers - a very neat job. Modest dampstaining nearly throughout, scattered stains and foxing and, in a few spots, fading to discrete text sections. Browning and staining to some page edges, title repaired along the top edge and trimmed at the bottom, old signature on the top corner - but, overall, a good and legible copy of the scarce first edition and only folio edition. Complete in 271 parts, two volumes in one, the second title stained in the gutter as are the nearby pages. Founded by Richard Steele directly before he and Addison founded The Spectator, The Tatler had less than a two year run, but was enormously influential. Though scholars differ on the precise numbers, Swift wrote many of the pieces, Teerink tentatively suggests verse in 9, 238, and prose in 230, 21, 31, 67, 68, 249, 258. Teerink 531. Size: Folio. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Literature & Literary; Humour. Inventory No: 045444.

Laibach (Ljubljana), Johann Georg Mayr, 1710 - 7 Bll., 127 S. 1 gefalt. "He developed his medical theory and his ideas of iatrochemistry under the influence of Thomas Sydenham`s current doctrine. On the basis of observations and autopsies, he proposed some new explanations for the etiology as well as the course of disease. He made early scientific analysisn of his observations and was critical of the old established doctrines. At the same time he stressed the importance of social environment, climate, and the bad habits on the occurrence of illness. . Gerbezius, a scientific writer and humanist, is considered the founder of Slovene scientific medizine. He was esteemed and applauded by European scientists. His portrait appeared among those of the issustious in the `Hall of Fourty` at the Medical Faculty in Padua" (Z. Zupanic Slavec & M. Kocijancic, Brief history of medicine in Slovenia. In Vesalius III (1997) S. 78 ff). Kainbacher 229. - "Theodoro Krump's account of Sinnar between 1700 and 1702 is in many respects the most important single written source concerning the precolonial history of the Sudan. In addition to invaluable testimony about the structure and functioning of the Funj government before the fall of the Unsab dynasty, Krump contributes data of unparalleled quality on the organization and conduct of the trans-Saharan caravan trade, the commerce in slaves, Sudanese medical practices, Sudanese relations with Ethiopia and a wide array of often unexpected vignettes of daily life." (Jay Spaulding, The Sudanese travels of Theodoro Krump. jspauldi/krump2home.html).

Amsterdam: Frederick De Wit, [c. 1710]. - Single sheet, (21 x 24 ½ inches). EXTREMELY FINE engraved map of Greece, surrounded by a border of yellow wash, with EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL HAND COLOR IN FULL, HEIGHTENED IN LIQUID GOLD, the individual regions shown in different bold watercolors of yellow, green, and pink, decorated with a fine compass rose pointing north with a GOLD-ENHANCED FLEUR-DE-LIS, the title within an ELABORATE HISTORIATED CARTOUCHE (old central fold, slightly toned). An EXTREMELY FINE engraved map of the Greek archipelago, Crete, part of Asia Minor, and the Aegean Sea. The beautiful title cartouche shows two figures, one with a halo painted with LIQUID GOLD and the other in military garb, surrounded by symbols of Greek antiquity, including a lute, armillary sphere, sheet music, and mathematical symbols. The colorist has added a marbling effect to the title panel, adding another layer of texture. The primary regions, indicated by color, are Macedonia, Thelia, Epirus, Livadia Acchaia, Peloponesus Morea, and Creta Candia [Crete]. Other islands shown are Cefalonia, Cyprus, Lesbos, Lemnos, and Chios. The Visscher family was one of the most distinguished of all 17th-century cartographic firms, and a major player in the era now considered the golden age of Dutch mapmaking. In the late 1600's, a period of great geographical discovery, Amsterdam became an international center of the arts and of cartography, with engravers and printers produced magnificent maps and charts of every kind. The fields of artistic production and mapmaking were arguably more seamlessly united during this era than any period before or since, as the strong competition among publishers meant that maps not only had to be scrupulously accurate, but also visually appealing. In this milieu, a number of venerable firms, including those established by Blaeu, Jansson, Hondius, as well as Visscher, competed for the ever-expanding market for maps and atlases. The firm founded by Nicholas Visscher set standards for exceptional quality that few others were able to equal, and Hendrick de Leth, who eventually rose to assume control of the Visscher publishing house in the 18th century, maintained the company's standards for excellence during a period when Amsterdam's cartographic preeminence was just beginning to be challenged by the French school of scientific cartography.         Ecrits de Mrs. des Miss. Etrang. Sur l'affaire de la Chine.

1710. 1710 - 12mo., (6 4/8 x 3 4/8 inches). Engraved allegorical frontispiece title-page, 3 sectional letterpress title-pages (some light browning, one or two spots). Contemporary FINE red morocco binding each cover decorated with a border of fine roll tools with small gilt tools of heads and castellated towers at each inner corner, surrounding a central cartouche with the arms of the Duc d'Antin, the spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in one, the others decorated with fine gilt tools, all edges gilt. Provenance: supra-libros of Louis Antoine de Pardaillan de Gondrin, marquis then duc d'Antin (1665-1736); with the bookplate of Roger Peyrefitte on the front paste-down; the bookplate of Jean-Paul Morin on the front paste-down of each volume, his sale, Paris, 4th November 2011, lot 42 First collected edition, and A FINE AND ATTRACTIVE COPY of three pamphlets concerning the "Quarrel of Rites", or Christian missions' difficulties evangelizing in China: "Lettre de messieurs des Missions etrangeres, au Pape. Sur le decret de Sa Saintete rendu en 1704 & publie en 1709 contre les idolatries & les superstitions Chinoises"; "Reponse de Mrs des Missions etrangeres, a la protestation et aux reflexions des Jesuites"; "Memoires our Rome, sur l'etat de la religion chretienne dans la Chine". These documents discuss important questions, such as what to call God in the native languages of India and the far-east; what role should the local traditions have in the Catholic rites and what could be tolerated. The Jesuits' reputation with their brother Dominicans and Franciscans was low, as they tolerated the certain rites such as ancestor-worship as part of civil ceremonies, but others viewed it as sheer idolatry. From the distinguished library of the Duc d'Antin, legitimate son of Louis XIV's mistress Madame de Montespan, who after her death in 1707 was bequeathed the Château de Petit-Bourg at Évry-sur-Seine and, more importantly, royal favour and the governorship of the Orléanais followed by head of the Bâtiments du Roi in 1708 a role which required that he supervise works on Versailles. A confident to Louis XIV and his architectural projects (such as the Salon d'Hercule), he managed to complete them under Louis XV. In 1711, Louis XIV promoted the marquisate of Antin into a "duché-pairie", and in 1724 d'Antin became a knight of the Ordre du Saint-Esprit. Cordier, Sinica 911-912; Lowendahl 311. Nouv. ed., Paris, 1780, p. 27). On this same page (136) are notes concerning the Arret of 23 Avril 1704, "Ordonna que l'inventaire des effets du cardinal de Furstemberg, Abbe de St. Germain-des-Pres, sur lesquels les officiers de cette Abbaye avoient appose les scelles," the importance of which is described by Herve, "Theorie des matieres feodales et censuelles" (Paris, 1780, vol. The entries within each letter of the Index were not written alphabetically, but in their order of appearance within the text of the Commentaries.

New expanded edition the first two volumes with large tables, published at the request of Chancellor. The original appeared for the first time in 1676, it was continued in this edition by René Le Comte to vouchers for the 1676-1705 period, further material collated by Tessereau was completely redesigned for this new edition. Full brown sheepskin time. Back to six nerves ornate coffered and gilded finials, as well as parts of title and volume numbers of red morocco. All slices speckled red. Faded back (no caps and lack of sheepskin). Scuffs and corners bumped. Bookplate pasted on the time contreplats. Major source on the history of the Chancellery in France; it is as old as the monarchy was constituted by the body of Chancellors such as the Chancellor, the Keeper of the Seals, large audienciers, secretary of the king of great college, treasurers, controllers, wax heater and other officers ( Chancery no longer today that the Department of Justice). Tessereau has assembled a valuable piece for the historian of the officers of the Chancery, their functions and prerogatives of the various embassies in the kingdom ... It is more of a compilation and publication of documents of a historian's work, the book is not less important.       Leyden: Pieter van der Aa, circa, 1710. Quarto, engraved title-page, six double-page maps, 41 engraved double-page plates; a very attractive copy in contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, neat restoration to joints. Wonderful Dutch celebration of the riches of the East Indies. A wonderful Dutch celebration of the riches of the East Indies in the form of a series of magnificent engravings by the foremost book-illustrator of his day. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was the most significant and prolific Dutch engraver in the second half of the seventeenth century. Here he celebrates the world beyond Europe, partly as a triumph of Dutch colonialism, partly as a spectacle of the distant exotic. The work begins with a complex engraved title, which is followed by a double-page double-hemisphere world map with vignette landscapes in the corners, and maps of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America. The publisher, Van der Aa, also published maps and atlases and these maps appear in some of his other works as well. The maps are followed by the series of forty-one engraved illustrations on forty double-page engraved plates. This wonderful illustrated book has always been rare and has always been highly regarded: 'Ce recueil, rare et recherché, est un des moins connus de l'oeuvre de célèbre graveur hollandais' (Chadenat).Romeyn de Hooghe's illustrations were also used to illustrate a book by Simon de Vries (Curieuse Aenmerckingen Der bysonderste Oost en West-Indische Verwonderenswaerdige Dingen, Utrecht, 1682), but in the present version they are presented as works of art on their own, not as illustrations to a text. In this publication they have the imprint of the publisher at the bottom of each plate (in the form "à Leide, chez Pierre vander Aa"); the long explanatory caption at the top of each plate appears in both French and Dutch here, whereas in the De Vries version it is in Dutch only.De Hooghe's engravings depict an enormous variety of subjects - reflecting the lengthy and wonderful list of topics on the title-page. About fifteen of the plates show American or West Indies subjects while most of the remainder show the East Indies and the Far East, mixing numerous features into single engravings, and encompassing peoples, customs, clothing, natural history including plants and animals, spices, views of places including Sri Lanka, Java and the Moluccas, diamonds and gems, boats, fireworks, musical instruments, religious ceremonies and marriages, priests, beggars, tea... A full list of the plates is available on request.

        ILE DE FRANCE [manuscript title].

[N.p., but most likely Mauritius. Early- to mid- 18th century]. - Manuscript map, 7 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Bottom corners trimmed away, wear and some loss along left and top edge. Light to moderate soiling. About good. An early manuscript map of the island of Mauritius, done in pen and ink on laid paper. On the map, the town of Grande Port is labeled as Port Bourbon - the port was renamed Port Bourbon when the French took over the island in 1710, though the name reverted back to Grande Port by the late 18th century. Plains, mountains, rivers, and other major geographical features are indicated on the map, as are the outlying smaller islands. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.

Light age-yellowing, bound in contemporary calf, pitted, smartly rebacked. All edges red. Contemporary marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Owner?'s inscription of Edward Scudamore MD, St. George?'s Place, Canty (probably Canterbury, as an Edward Scudamore was a donor to the Cathedral library there). Simon Tyssot de Patot (1655-1738) was a teacher of mathematics in Deventer. Graesse IV 438.
