Broadside. Begins: "Queries. Whether any Parliament ever did better than this has done....

[Edinburgh?]: J.M. Folio (30.8 cm, 12.1"). [2] pp.. 1710 Scarce broadside: Bitterly sarcastic commentary on the brusque and ungrateful ouster of a "heroick" parliamentary ministry, on the new ministry's idiotic and wicked conduct of the current conflict between England and France, and other contemporary political events, phrased in the form of rhetorical questions and here reprinted from a London broadside dated by various sources to either 1696 or 1710. (It's an interesting exercise to parse the text closely for clues that point to the one date or the other — while observing how well, indeed, the rant would suit either!) Searches of ESTC, WorldCat, and NUC Pre-1956 locate only => two copies — one in Scotland, one in England. Now in a Mylar folder; edges slightly ragged, repair at lower inner margin just touching letters on one side, small holes in lower center with loss of a few letters. Some letters in header cut off at top due to printer's error. Tipped onto a blank leaf bearing a watermark of 1826.

London: Printed for J. Nicholson, W. Taylor, and H. Clements, 1710. Two volumes, 8vo (187 x 117 mm, 203 x 117 mm). [26], 440 pp., signatures A? a4 chi1 B-2F?; [8], xxviii, 468 pp., signatures A? a? b6 B-2G? 2H². Including the separate advertisement leaf before p.1. Contemporary non-matching calf, neatly rebacked to match with gilt rules and red leather labels (some wear of extremities). Text very little browned, some spotting and scattered soiling (p.16 of vol. II stronger soiled in margin). Provenances: Denis Gibbs* (armorial bookplate to vol. I), Robert Wells, Wardle Road (ink stamp to free endpaper of vol. I), Geo. Bates, London, Feb. 17, 170? (signature to free endpaper of vol. I); George Paterson of Castle Huntly (1734-1813, armorial bookplate to vol. II). ---- Garrison-Morton 2670; Wellcome III, p.35; NLM/Blake 149; Waller 3092 and Osler Cat. 2618 (vol. I only). FIRST EDITION, with the EXCEPTIONALLY RARE SECOND VOLUME. The author was the first to use a watch to count the pulse-his watch ran for a minute-which made an accurate study of the rate of the pulse possible; his method is now, of course, universal. He also tried to estimate the blood volume and to compare it with the body weight. In the appendix there is a translation of extracts from the rare work on Chinese medicine by Cleyer (1682) dealing with Chinese pulse lore. "Before watches had hands to record the seconds, Floyer invented a pulse-watch which divided the minute. He was the first to count the pulse with the aid of a watch and to make regular observations on the pulse-rate" (Garrison-M.). Volume I has an advertisement for other works by Floyer and 'The pulse watch', printed as a single leaf (chi1) with the note "Place this after the Contents". Volume II has a variant title-page: The pulse watch.; these essays are added as an appendix, I. An essay to make a new sphygmologia., II. An inquiry into.the respirations., III. A letter concerning the rupture in the lungs, which is the cause of the asthma in mankind. with an individual title-page for essay III. The second volume (often lacking) was published in 1710 and contains the first English translation of Michal Piotr Boym's 1682 Specimen medicinae Sinicae, on Chinese pulse lore (see Garrison-Morton 6492). Complete sets of this work are very rare, volume II usually being missing; even the Dr. Bedford copy in the Royal College of Physicians is imperfect. *Denis Gibbs was co-editor with Philip K. Wilson of "Advice to a Young Physician" by Sir John Floyer MD (1649-1734) of Lichfield in Staffordshire, William Sessions Ltd, 2007. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Frontis., [32] ff., 1181, [1] pp., [11 (-1)] ff.; 1 plt., illus.. 1710 Aside from its importance in the religious tradition, Luther's translation of the Bible is probably the most important single text for the formation of Modern German. Like other Luther Bibles, this one contains his prefaces to the books of the Bible, including his theologically significant Preface to the Epistle to the Romans. It is also supplemented by the Augsburg Confession, of which, sadly, the last leaf is absent here. In this printing, a fine engraved title-page shows an angel delivering Luther's translation of the Old Testament to a Church still in bondage to the requirements of the old Law. A similar sectional title-page, depicting God the Father, Jesus Christ, and allegorical figures of the sacraments of Baptism and Communion, comes before the New Testament. Six special pairs of leaves, bound in at various places, each offer a first page containing an engraving of biblical figures and three following pages containing their biographies. A woodcut vignette of the unusual triple arms of the city of Nürnberg appears on the title-page; a number of chapters are adorned, at head, with one-third page woodcut illustrations set in neat borders; and the books typically open with typographically appealing two-column "headers." The text is in a handsome and relatively legible fraktur. The size, decoration, and overall composition of the volume, along with its faults (especially the manner in which which pages are worn), suggest a history as a lectern Bible in a Lutheran Church. Binding: This copy is bound in ornately blind-tooled and -stamped alum-tawed pigskin over wooden boards, the front cover with three of its original etched corner bosses and with its two etched clasp-catches. (Bosses of back cover no longer present, remnants of clasps.) A martial portrait is centered on each cover; unfortunately these are now so worn that they are no longer identifiable. Perhaps they belong to the electors of Saxony who safeguarded the Lutheran faith in its infancy. Provenance: Ownerhship signature of Ludwig Buehl, Philadelphia, 1852. Binding as above. Covers abraded and worn, some scraping to back upper board, leather peeling back from fore-edge of front cover and opening at ends of joints, most notably at bottom of front one. Front free endpaper with inked ownership note in German, dated Philadelphia, 1852. Frontispiece with a fore-edge chip (not into image) and tears in from bottom margin and at gutter, with small loss to plate area at bottom inner corner. A number of pages with tears extending into text, a few places with chips to bottom outer corners with loss of words but not of sense. Scattered foxing, with occasional darker small stains. Last leaf (of Confession, NOT Bible) lacking. Despite faults, a grand volume both usable and inspiring.

Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (September 27, 1627 – April 12, 1704) was a French bishop and theologian, renowned for his sermons and other addresses. He has been considered by many to be one of the most brilliant orators of all time and a masterly French stylist. Court preacher to Louis XIV of France, Bossuet was a strong advocate of political absolutism and the divine right of kings. He argued that government was divine and that kings received their power from God. He was also an important courtier and politician. The works best known to English speakers are three great orations delivered at the funerals of Queen Henrietta Maria, widow of Charles I of England (1669), her daughter, Henriette, Duchess of Orléans (1670), and the outstanding soldier le Grand Condé (1687).Vitriarius was a Dutch jurist.

Padova MDCCX [1710], Giufeppe Corona. Original vellum, very. clean, solid, 97p., Italian text,10.5 x 17 cm., Ad inftanza. di Alvife Pavino. FIRST ITALIAN EDITION. AN EARLY PRIMARY JESUIT MISSIONARY ACCOUNT OF CHINA 1710 Father Joachim Bouvet [1656-1730], was a French Jesuit and missionary to China. ** Extracted from the Catholic encyclopedia: * "[Fr. J. Bouvet was a] "Jesuit missionary, born at Le Mans, France, died at Peking, China, 28 June, 1732. * He was one of the first Jesuits selected by Louis XIV for the mission in China. Before setting out for their destination, he and his associates were admitted to the Academie des Sciences and were commissioned by that learned body to carry on astronomical observations, to determine the geographical positions of the various places they were to visit, and to collect various scientific data. The little band, after being provided by order of the King with all necessary scientific instruments, sailed from Brest, 3 March 1685, with Father Fontaney as Superior. After spending some time in Siam, they finally arrived in Peking, 7 February, 1688. They were favorably received by the Emperor the famous Khang-hi, who retained Father Bouvet, together with Father Gerbillion, near his person and made them his instructors in mathematics. While engaged in this work, the two Fathers wrote several mathematical treatises in the Tartar language which the Emperor caused to be translated into Chinese, adding the prefaces himself. So far did they win his esteem and confidence that he gave a site within the palace enclosure for a church and residence which were finally completed in 1702. * In 1679 he [Emperor] sent Father Bouvet back to France to obtain new missionaries and made him the bearer of a gift of forty-nine volumes in Chinese for the king. These were deposited in the Royal Library, and Louis XIV, in turn, commissioned Father Bouvet to present to the Emperor a magnificently bound collection of engravings. * In 1699 Father Bouvet arrived a second time in China, accompanied by ten missionaries, among them men of great ability, such as Fathers de Premare, Régis, and Parrenin. Khang-hi honored him further with the title of interpreter to his son, the heir-apparent. In 1700, with four of his fellow missionaries, he presented a memorial to the Emperor, asking for a decision as to the meaning attached to the various ceremonies of the Chinese in honor of Confucius and their ancestors. The Emperor, who had taken a keen interest in the controversy regarding the ceremonies, replied that they were simply civil usages, having no religious significance whatsoever. * The memorial, together with the Emperors reply, was published in the "Gazette de Pekin" but failed to allay the excitement then raging in Europe over the question. From 1708 to 1715 Father Bouvet was engaged in a survey of the empire and the preparation of maps of the various provinces. He was a man of great energy and ability, and of simple, unselfish piety. For nearly fifty years he shared all the labors of the missionaries and was engaged from time to time in various scientific works. During this long period, chiefly on account of his services to the Emperor and the favor he enjoyed with him, he did much to advance the interest of Christianity and to facilitate the entrance and the labors of his fellow-missionaries. * His Chinese name was Petsin. * Besides his works on mathematics, Father Bouvet was the author of "Etat présent de la Chine, en figures gravées par P. Giffart sur les dessins apportés au roi par le P. J. Bouvet" (Paris, 1697); "Portrait histoique de l'empereur de la Chine" (Paris, 1697). The library at Le Mans contains a collection of his manuscripts including a Chinese dictionary."" ** End of citation from Catholic Encyclopedia. * CONDITION: The original vellum binding is in lovely condition, with penned author's name and title with a decoration on the spine. The binding is solid and has little wear anywhere and must be described as "excellent plus." The pages are clean, and white with little foxing evident, 5 leafs [10 sides] are discolored and darkened but they are not brittle or other- wise damaged, a clear and solid copy of a very RARE BOOK. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: John Lust: WESTERN BOOKS ON CHINA PUBLISHED UP TO 1850, -no. 465 refers to the French edition of 1699. 6 Teile in 2 Bänden. Mit gestoch. Frontispiz. Pergamentbde d.

Jahrhunderts in frühen Drucken. V. Leipzig, Fritsch, 1710; VI. Leipzig, Fritsch, 1709. – Dünnhaupt 1.I.4.; 1.II.4; 1.III.1; 1.IV.2; 1.V.3; 1.VI.1. Goed. III 269, 5. Vgl. Faber du Faur 1345 und 1346 sowie Hayn/G. II 123. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Leibniz urteilt in seiner Vorrede: "Nulla Germaniae superioris pars meliores Historicos invenit quam Bavaria". - Die beiden Zwischentitel zum Adlzreiter-Teil nicht mitgebunden.         North America corrected from the observations communicated to the Royal Society at London and the Royal Academy at Paris

[London], 1710. Engraved map on two sheets joined, hand-coloured in outline. Early manuscript notation in the area of the Caribbean: "The first land discover'd by Colombus 1492" An early, rare and important large-scale English map of North America. This decorative map provided the English speaking world with a highly detailed depiction of North America and one of the earliest large-scale English maps of the region. The area covered includes the Hudson's Bay and Arctic regions, as well as the explored portions of the American west. Dedicated to Anthony Hammond, Commissioner in Her Majesty's Navy (whose arms appear on the map below the decorative cartouche), the map incorporates data from Guillaume De L'Isle's landmark mapping of the region (his 'Carte du Mexique et de la Floride' in particular). Senex, however, also made significant improvements to the earlier maps, particularly in his depictions of the Great Lakes region as well as the lower Mississippi delta: the result is probably the most accurate English depiction of its time. There is also much valuable textual information given on the map, including Native American place names, and notes on the discovery of many remote areas, most notably Lahontan's mythical Long River. The present example is an intermediate state between Stevens & Tree A and B; i.e. without John Maxwell's imprint but before the addition of the Bowles imprint. Degrees of Latitude pp.110-113; Stevens & Tree, "Comparative Cartography" 61, in Tooley, The Mapping of America ; Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast 495; Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 92.

NANSEN BUSHUU BANKOKU SHOHKA NO ZU: BUDDHIST MAP OF THE UNIVERSE According to Zu

[Kyoto 1710, Nagata Chohbei]. Blue original paper covers,. title slip, covers rubbed: some blue loss, woodblock printed. 1 m. 44.5 x 1 m. 20 cm. accordion folded, very good impres-. sion, excellent registry, white hand-made paper, clean solid.. An excellent fine early example of a woodblock printed map, with Chinese text. This is the first Japanese world map drawn according to Buddhist cosmology & the prototype for all other later Buddhist world maps done in Japan until the end of the 19th century. * THE ARTIST AND AUTHOR: Hotan [aka Zuda Rokashi 1654-1728], was the author, artist, editor, scholar and Buddhist priest, he was also the famous founder of Kegonji Buddhist Temple in Kyoto. He was an eminent Buddhist priest and scholar who reconciled new information from the West with Chinese sources. The work is signed "Rokashi," which means "mapmaker and editor." * This map gave the hitherto isolated Japanese "a way to see a wider view of the world, but one that they could easily understand...his map was widely acclaimed for the numerous place names he furnished for Indian & Asian areas.. very rare in Western maps..." Quoted from Namba, see below. * The map is centered on Jambudvipa the mythological heart of Buddhist cosmography in India. This very vital spot is noted by a horned animal who's breath is a long spiral of flame emanating from the most sacred & holy Buddhist place on the earth. Europe appears as a string of islands. A land bridge connects China with an unnamed continent to its East, which "must undoubtedly be a reflection of America" in the opinion of the celebrated Japanese * Per Rudolph [see below], on p.92, she states: "This map is descended from a line of Japanese manuscript maps based on the journey of the Chinese priest Xuangzang's pilgrimage to India in search of scriptures. Scholars believe that the maps were originally copied out as a from of devotion--a pilgrimage of the spirit if not the body--and that later versions like this, which includes South America, demonstrate an attempt to reconcile sacred geography with the examples of European cartography that were reaching Japan through Dutch traders and, via China, Jesuit missionaries." * WHAT ONE MODERN CARTOGRAPHIC SCHOLAR SAYS: Cartographic scholars Prof. Oda discuss the Northern most Japanese island of Ezo where the Ainu lived is located on this map just slightly South of the mystery continent which is actually American. Africa is a diminutive land mass. To the far West is a small island empire identified as "Country of Western Women" along with other mountainous island kingdoms, likely England, Scotland and Ireland. The map text includes a list of Buddhist Sutras, Chinese histories, literary classics &c. All drawn by Hotan, which "Illustrates the fusion of Buddhist dogma and Western geographical knowledge." See Oda below. * PROTYPE MAP: The basic outlines of the map are copied from a Buddhist prototype, the Gotenjiku Zu [MAP OF THE FIVE INDIES], whose characteristic features was the shield-shaped continent of Jambu-dvipa. Jambu-dvipa was the habitable world according to the Buddhist cosmographical view. In this example the sacred lake of Anavatapta can be seen in the centre, from which flow four rivers in a whirlpool pattern. Jambu-dvipa can be equated topographically with the Indian peninsula, Lake Anavatapta symbolizes Lake Manasarovar in the Himalayas and the four rivers represent the Ganges, Oxus, Indus and Tarim. In order to preserve the traditional Buddhist outlines and at the same time incorporate the new knowledge of Western geography, the European and American countries are shown as small islands on the periphery of Jambu-dvipa. Although an amalgam of discordant ideas, the map became one of the most popular and widely circulated works of the day and served as a model for all later Buddhist maps." Quoted from Jones, see below. * RARITY: This is the first Japanese map to show Europe, Africa and America. . This is an important early Buddhist relic and classic, considered a land-mark of early Buddhist cartography. Maps of this subject and Deluxe size are RARE and were seldom printed, they are not commonly found on the open market. Early Buddhist maps of this Deluxe grandeur and caliber are always quite R A R E ! * CONDITION: By and large, very good condition, a few old tiny worm holes, most neatly mended, two very small and faint stains, otherwise a very clean solid copy. Entirely hand-printed by woodblocks on very white hand-made Kozo fiber Washi paper. In the original covers, scuffed and edges worn, but the subtle original blind-stamped traditional Buddhist swastika design still there. Printed on several sheets of Japanese Washi, hand-made paper, then joined to make a Deluxe and grand size work.         AMANJAKU DEN: A PERVERSE EROTIC LEGEND. [Japanese Title] [A Bizzare and Unusual

[Japan c.1710-50, n.p.]. Brown & silver covered boards, very. good, 7 b .w. erotic double-page woodblock illustrations,. mounted on mica flecked paper, 18 x 25 cm., no title slip as. issued, accordion folded, each illustration is 31 x 12 cm.. A unique and hitherto unfound odd and most unusual erotic book probably of the early to mid-18th century. The work portrays men and women with genitals on their foreheads, engaged in heterosexual and homosexual intercourse. Perhaps one of the most bizarre erotic books ever done in Japan. * CHINESE TITLE: Pinyin TIAN XIE GUI YUN. ***** THE LEGEND OF AMANJAKU or AMAN NO JAKU: Japanese Buddhist literature is abundant with variations on the theme of "Aman-No-Jaku," aka "Amanjaku," "Manojaku," commonly understood to be a "Heavenly Evil Spirit." This spirit or demon-like creature in Japanese folklore is usually depicted as being a male during the day and female at night. The demon is usually depicted as a kind of small Oni [devil], and is thought to be able to provoke a person's darkest desires and thus instigate him into perpetrating wicked deeds. * Amanjaku is also depicted in Chinese and Japanese mythology, the AMANOJAKU is a changeling, a water spirit that infiltrates the human world to play cruel tricks on people, by reading their minds and twisting their requests or desires to be used against them. * The "Amanojaku" is also known the Lord of the River and serves Bishamonten, one of the four deva kings of Buddhism as a minor demon. [See Wikipedia for more details below]. * MEANING OF THE WORD AMANOJAKU: In Japanese, the term "Amanojaku" also refers to a person who is deliberately contradictory, someone who argues for the sake of arguing, or can be used in common Japanese conversation to refer to someone who is a "Perverted Demon." ***** *** THE ILLUSTRATIONS: THE BUDDHIST THEME: Illustration number 1: This work begins showing the Buddha flanked by two of his disciple monks. The title written in four Chinese/Japanese characters reveal title. The Buddha and his two disciples listen to two elderly believers: one is a male, he has and erect penis on his forehead. The other is a woman, she has a vagina on her forehead. Neither the Buddha, nor his two disciples monks show genitals on their foreheads. The couple have come to consult with the Buddha about their grievances. *** Illustration number 2: Shows a man and a woman in a Tatami matted room, both wear lovely 18th century decorated Kimono. They hug each other, and are engaged in making love from their foreheads, which show an erect male penis and testicals, inserted into the woman's forehead where her vagina is located. Adjacent to the young couple is an older woman, who has become aroused by the adjacent couple making love. The old woman uses a dildoe tied to the post which she hugs while making love to the vagina on her forehead. *** Illustration number 3 shows a couple laying on a blanket, their Kimono pulled down and opened and used as a top cover. They make love and kiss. The man has an erect penis on his forehead, the woman a vagina on hers. There is some Chirishi [toilet paper] just above her head on the floor, some paper was already used, with a folded package of yet unused Chirishi. Chishiri shown in Japanese prints is a symbol of a lot of flowing love juices which means a very erotic setting, and the great need for paper to clean up the results of hot love-making in Japanese woodcut and erotic paintings. *** Illustration number 4 shows an older man with an erect penis on his forehead, penetrating the anus of a younger man, who's smaller but erect penis is seen on his forehead. The younger man has no pubic hair indicating a very young boy. Adjacent to these two is a woman, with vagina on her forehead voyeuring at the two other men. All wear 18th century period Kimono, a Shogi board and two bowls for stones is located in the front left of the illustration. Gay activities in Japanese were accepted as a norm, and were not especially unusual. However to find graphic examples in Japanese erotic books are exceptionally rare and seldom found. *** Illustration number 5 shows a fully clothed man bending over a sleeping woman. He has a very large erect penis and begins to penetrate the vagina on the woman's forehead. She is fully clothed and sleeping on a wooden "pillow" which supports her elaborate hair coiffeur. *** Illustration number 6 shows a lively scene of two men and one woman. The men both have very large and erect penises on their foreheads. The woman has a vagina on her forehead. The scene is likely that of a rape of the young girl. The man on the far right is ejaculating as he either watches the other man as he attempts to force himself on the girl, who is actively pushing the second man's face away from her. She looks away in an effort not to allow him to penetrate or enter her vagina. He actively pulls her arm to him but his face is forced away from the girl by her resistance. *** Illustration number 7 shows an old man in bed, he holds a kind of pot with a large opening. As he faces down, he inserts his penis into the pot for some satisfaction. His erect penis protrudes from his forehead. ****** * Each double-page illustration has Japanese text, which outlines the dialogue or describes the action. Often these words are the sounds of people in orgasm, or making comments about making love or the pleasure and good feelings. The size and hardness of the penis or the flavor and the juices of the vagina, and its supple feelings of euphoria when engaged in love-making. *** R A R I T Y OF SUBJECT: The placement of the genitals on the forehead gives one a lot of room to theorize on the meaning of such artistic expression. In our 50 years of experience in dealing Japanese woodblock printed books and painted original art, this is the first and only example with such imaginative and symbolist expression. With the beginning of the work showing the Buddha and his two disciples lacking any genitals on their foreheads, one can simply assume, that in a Buddhist way, they have given up carnal desire, as represented by common people who's foreheads display genitals, perhaps meaning that sex is on their minds or they simply view others as sexual objects, eager to make love and engage in carnal thoughts and activities. Obviously seeing an erect penis on some man whiles others see what he thinks and feels is an insight to his innermost thoughts and desires. In all cases in this book the men all show an erect penis. The women are a bit more difficult to fathom. Their vaginas are simply visible on their foreheads, and no fluids are visible or other evidence of their carnal desire or sexually excited stated. All of the men have public hair adjacent to their sex organs, while all women are lacking any pubic hair completely. ***** BINDING AND MOUNTING: * BINDING: The book has probably been rebound sometime after the 1750's with a more recent thin brown paper, decorated with a silver chrysanthemum, and a Mon [family crest] with gold and black on both front and rear covers, each cover has a distinctly different kind of illustration but of the same theme. The corners and edges are somewhat worn, some loss to the paper, nevertheless the whole book is very solid and nicely preserved. * * MOUNTING: Each page has at an earlier date been nicely mounted on a stiff Washi [hand-made Japanese paper], accordion folded. Each woodcut illustration was laid down on the Washi backing paper, then each illustration is bordered with a rare and stunning crushed oyster-shell type gesso Washi. The effect is of shimmering pearl-like color and hue with a stunning effect. This was no ordinary mounting, and appropriate for an exceptionally and most unusual RARE book ! ***** CONDITION OF THE WOOODBLOCK PRINTS: These are very early black and white woodcut prints. Each print has an excellent and vivid impression, key blocks are black and superbly printed with strong images. There is a small worm hole which left a very small hole on each matching side of all pages but this does not detract very much from the overall work. By page four the hole is very tiny, from page five it returns the about the same size and shape as the first three pages. Page 6 has a small trace of the same hole, page seven does not have any traces of that worm hole, but has some center margin some minor worm loss and a few other very tiny old worm holes. The paper is old and has the patina of paper from that age, the usual surface rubbing or thumbing in the lower corners, which is quite normal. Again, we are overly critical of any flaws found on our books, and feel it is better to overly emphasize and describe the defects rather than avoid such discussion. Suffice to say, by and large this is an excellent item in very nice condition, something that any collector or museum would be proud to own. *** RARITY: This book is not listed in any of the usual bibliographies including Shibui. This is the first and only example we have ever seen or known of with these kinds of utterly unusual illustrations. As most of our readers know, Japanese prints were mostly limited to about 200 copies. Due to the nature of cherry wood block, they checked, warped, shrank after use and were rendered useless after about 200 or less inking and printings. * "BANNED" or "PROHIBITED" BOOKS: Shun Pon, Haru Bon: In the case of this item, it is very likely that it was printed in a much smaller discreet quantity than the 200 copies possible off the blocks. Due to the "banned" nature of such books, there is no date, publisher nor place cited. One is simply left to determine the date and artist by stylistic analysis. It is well-known that during the Tokugawa period [1603-1868], erotic prints and books were "BANNED" or "PROHIBITED" by decree of the Shogun. One of the influencing factors was that during this period some Shoguns were changing their views and being influenced by Christians who entered Japan during this period. The Shogun did not want foreigners, and Jesuit missionaries to think that Japan was a crass and base nation. Naturally foreigners soon learned that prostitution was rampant and so this strange logic from the Shogun never had much affect on the Christians and surely not on the Japanese. * The Shogun enforced severe punishments for persons involved in drawing, printing, carving blocks and publishing erotic books and prints. With out the "Kiwame" or censor's approval seal, all such items were "Banned" outright by the Shogun decree. * While these "Prohibited" books and prints were widely circulated in an "underground" society, there are ample examples of famous artists taking on commissions to produce erotic books and prints fun or profit. The record and bibliography is loaded with these examples. "Banning" such erotic works simply meant that the number printed were limited to smaller numbers and distribution was done under the table, discretely circulating such books privately among collectors. During these times it was not necessary to sign such artistic works, by-and-large the population had a very good idea who the artist was by being familiar with their style and other works, it was simply a "public secret" who the artist was. Often the artist poked fun at the Shogun with political jokes and assumed names to confound any chance of being discovered. * Over the centuries, this knowledge decreased and is now the domain of the art historian or scholar to identify and determine just who the artist is. Stylistic analysis remains the standard method. *** THE ARTIST/SCHOOLS: While there are no signatures or seals indicating the artist's name or even his alternate Go [studio name], we believe this work is part of the "Primitives and First Century of Ukiyo-e School 1660-1765" period. [See Lane below]. The women's coiffeur is very similar to those found in this period, as well as the drawing style, technique and genre. It is this cataloger's opinion that this work was likely the creation of one of the Moronobu School masters. Perhaps done by Sukenobu, Yoshikiyo, Morishige, Sugimura, Moronobu, Kiyonobu, Masanobu, or others from this period. We believe this work was likely done from around 1710-1750. It was also likely that it was done by one of the artists listed below. *** MORONOBU SUKENOBU SCHOOL: Nishikawa Sukenobu [1671 -August 20, 1750] often called simply "Sukenobu", was a Japanese printmaker from Kyoto. He was unusual for a Ukiyo-e in being based in the imperial capital of Kyoto. He did prints of actors, but gained note for his works concerning women. His Hyakunin Joro Shinasadame: Appreciating 100 Women, in two volumes published in 1723, depicted women of all classes, from the empress to prostitutes, and received favorable results His Hyakunin Joro Shinasadame: Appreciating 100 women, in two volumes published in 1723, depicted women of all classes, from the empress to prostitutes, and received favorable results Leading members of this school were: Nishikawa Sukenobu the founder; Nishikawa Suketada; Kawashima Nobukiyo; Nishikawa Terunobu; and Takagi Sadatake. * HISHIKAWA MORONOBU SCHOOL: Hishikawa Moronobu [1618-July 25, 1694] was a Japanese painter and printmaker known for his advancement of the Ukiyo-e woodcut style starting in the 1670s. Leading members of the MORONOBU school were: Hishikawa Moronobu the founder; Hishikawa Morofusa; Hishikawa Moroyoshi; Hishikawa Moronaga; Hishikawa Moroshige; Hishikawa Morohira; and Tamazaki Ryujo. *** EXEPTIONALLY RARE ITEM: This work is not recorded in any bibliography we researched and is not found in the KSM in Japan. Truly rare and obscure item ! ** BIBLIOGRAPHY: Not listed in any of the usual SHIBUI, Kiyoshi. UKIYO-E NAISHI. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF JAPANESE EROTIC ILLUSTRATED WOODBLOCK PRINTED BOOKS. * H. KERLEN.         Autograph letter signed.

Paris, August 4, n. y. - 4to. 1 p. on bifolium. [.]".

Tabula Mexicae et Floridae, Terrarum Anglicarum, et Anteriorum Americae Insularum; Ite, Cursuum et Circuituum Fluminis Mississippi Dicti

Amsterdam, 1710. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. Highly decorative Dutch derivative of De l'Isle's monumental 1703 mapping: this copy a dark impression with beautiful full period colour. Despite the title, this map covers a large portion of North America, from the Great Lakes in the north, through Texas and Mexico to Panama in the south, with Delisle's excellent depiction of the Mississippi River Valley. The Southwest shows missions and native villages, including Acoma, as well as Taos, Santa Fe, and Casas Grandes. The region that became Texas was then under French rule and part of "Florida" (later changed to "Louisiana"). Its southern border is the Rio Norte (Rio Grande) which winds back towards Taos. In East Texas, the Indian villages are designated where the Spanish constructed missions and presidios. Much of what became northTexas was then ruled and occupied by the Comanches, farther south and west in Nova Mexico, as the map notes, was "Apacheria or Terra Apachorum", region of the Apaches. Schenk has added a vignette off the Pacific coast of Central America, reflecting the wealth of the region with an elaborate sea battle between Spanish and French forces and a scene of buccaneers unloading a treasure chest. The route of the annual Spanish treasure fleet wind through the Gulf. Martin & Martin, Maps of Texas and the Southwest p. 93 and plate 16; Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West 107; Lowery 198.

        [Oliver Cromwell] Olivarius Cromwell

Published by Henr. Neuhusius Fris. Pensionarius Worcumensis, 1710. Engraving. Printed on laid watermarked paper. In good condition with the exception of two skillfully mended tears across Cromwell's face. Very light crease along middle of image. Sheet has been re-margined with laid paper. Image size: 21 ¾ x 17 inches. This remarkable engraving is an early portrait of Oliver Cromwell, one of England's most famous leaders. This is a commanding equestrian portrait of Oliver Cromwell with a panoramic view of London stretching out behind him. Published by the celebrated German poet Henricus Neuhusius this image provides a fascinating insight into the dissemination of Cromwell's image across Europe. Cromwell is memorialized in countless portraits by both English and Continental artists, and his image continued to be reproduced in print until the late nineteenth century. This rare engraving is an early example of the pictorial legacy, which Cromwell inspired. Published for a continental market, this striking portrait depicts Cromwell as larger than life; both his horse and his body are massive in proportion to his surroundings, creating a statuesque effect, which is visually compelling. Cromwell's body controls the compositional space of the image making him appear all-powerful, and he hold's the viewer's attention with his resolute gaze. Early portraits of Cromwell, such as this, are seldom seen on the market, making this a true rarity and a fine collector's piece.

Regnum Neapolis in quo sunt Aprutium Ulterius et Citerius, Comitatus Molisius, Terra Laboris, Capitaniata Principatus Ulterior et Citerior Terra Bariensis et Hidruntina, Basilicata, Calabria Citerior et Ulterior

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1710. Engraving with full, period colour. There is a crease parallel to the centerfold, otherwise, excellent condition. A beautiful Dutch map of the Kingdom of Naples This map is from an edition of Frederick De Wit's maps made by Pierre Mortier about 1710. De Wit had brought to Dutch cartography a decorative flare and an appreciation for the Baroque that most of his contemporaries lacked. Here in his map of the Kingdom of Naples, putti hold up a banner of the handsome armorial shields of the various provinces and in the cartouche in the lower right display the arms of Naples. As one expects in a map by De Wit, the engraving is extremely fine (one can see a little eruption over Mount Vesuvius) and the calligraphy is distinct and readable. The Kingdom of Naples was rarely autonomous. At the time this map was issued, it was ruled by Hapsburg Austria, who occupied it during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703. The Spanish re-conquered the kingdom during the War of the Polish Succession (1733-35). Koeman, Mor 12.

Amsterdam, 1710. Engraved with period outline colour. Bottom margin trimmed close to neat line. All edges browned. A handsome early 18th century Dutch map of Denmark The de la Feuille family came to Amsterdam from France in 1683. The father, Daniel, was a goldsmith and engraver. Talent in engraving in Amsterdam at that time naturally led to publishing and mapmaking. This map was made by Jacob (originally Jacques) on the basis of several contemporary maps. It is very attractive, very much in the style of late Dutch cartography: emphasizing clarity and readability, handsomely coloured and bearing an interesting and appropriate Baroque style cartouche - here demonstrating the rich agricultural and pastoral aspects of the country. Koeman, La F 16, #83.
