GAROFALO, Biagio (1677-1762)
Francesco Gonzaga, Rome 1707 - Two parts in one volume, 4to (236 x 171 mm). Roman and Hebrew types. Half-title. xvi, 61, [1]; 131 pp. Two woodcut initials, woodcut device on title. 18th-century Italian vellum over pasteboard. Some pale spotting, first few leaves with marginal dampstain and a few small marginal losses, covers lightly soiled. FIRST EDITION of Garofalo's heterodox study of Greek and Jewish poetry. He was the first Neapolitan to enter the debate concerning Hebrew poetry at the beginning of the 18th century. "In the first decade of the century he was one of the few who dared to publish what he had learned from the ideas of Biblical criticism proposed by Spinoza and Richard Simon. [In this work.] Garofalo dealt first with the explosive issue of the authority of the Hebrew Biblical text contending as had Spinoza and Simon, that it was in need of textual revision. He discussed the custom of all ancient peoples of preserving their laws in poetry. In the second part of the work he explained how Greek poets were expected to use popular fictions to persuade the uneducated to chose right behaviors. Such examples supported the Arcadian claim concerning the value of poetry in reforming the bad habits of people. On the issue of whether Hebrew used rhyme or rhythm Garofalo sided with the Protestant Le Clerc" (Harold Samuel Stone, 'Vico's Cultural History: The Production and Transmission of Ideas in Naples, New York, 1997, p. 198). DUGUET, Jacques-Joseph;
Paris, Jacques Estienne, 1707. 2 parties en un volume in-12 de (2)ff., 240pp. et de (1)f., 218pp., (3)ff., maroquin bleu nuit, triple filet doré d'encadrement, armes dorées aux centres, dos à nerfs orné de caissons de fleurons dorés, coupes et bordures décorées, doublures de maroquin citron, dentelle intérieure dorée, tranches dorées sur marbrure (reliure de l'époque). Édition originale de cette méthode pour bien prier. Jacques-Joseph Duguet (1649-1733) quitta l'Oratoire en 1685 en raison de ses sympathies jansénistes -il fut proche d'Antoine Arnauld- mais il prit bientôt ses distances avec une doctrine qu'il jugeait menacée par un extrémisme croissant. Son opposition à la bulle Unigenitus et son attachement à la doctrine de son ami Quesnel l'obligea à fuir en permanence. Relié par Boyet en maroquin bleu doublé de maroquin citron. Actif à Paris de 1680 à 1733, Luc-Antoine Boyet fut le relieur du roi Louis XIV, du comte d?Hoym et de la marquise de Chamillart. On lui a attribué la paternité des premières reliures en maroquin doublé. Relieur, et non doreur, il était réputé pour le choix de ses maroquins et la fermeté du corps d?ouvrage. Très bel exemplaire, entièrement réglé, aux armes de Pierre-Michel-Marie Double, évêque de Tarbes (1767-1844). Il passa ensuite dans la bibliothèque du baron Léopold Double. Il figure à son catalogue sous le n° 23 (cat. 1863). Ex-libris Émile Levasseur. 1707 Clarendon English Civil War History of Rebellion Royalist Church of England ‘The History of the Rebellion’ by Edward Hyde Clarendon is a famous, early-18th-century account of the English Civil War. He sought to support the Church of England and in doing so ‘History’ directly influenced English politics. David Hume, Scottish philosopher, said this of Clarendon’s masterpiece: “Clarendon, however, will always be esteemed an entertaining writer, even independent of our curiosity to know the facts, which he relates He seems perpetually anxious to apologize for the king; but his apologies are often well grounded.” This rare 1707 second edition features three volumes in six tomes. Torino, Gio. Battista Zappata, 1707. In-4° piccolo (19 x 15), pp. (8)+103, con 2 tavv. in rame ripiegate f.t., la prima incisa da G. Baillieu (40 x 47), la seconda incisa da Agnelli (39 x 50) e parzialmente in bella coloritura a tempera coeva, ambedue raffiguranti Torino e i suoi contorni con le operazioni militari dell'assedio del 1706. Legatura piena pelle coeva, titoli e fregi in oro al dorso (con qualche restauro). Qualche traccia d'uso, ma buon esemplare. (9392) Esemplare eccezionale di questa rara relazione coeva del celebre assedio di Torino del settembre 1706, conclusasi con la battaglia vittoriosa delle armi sabaude; essa è la prima relazione a stampa di un testimone oculare degli eventi. Nel nostro esemplare infatti la pianta dell'assedio non è quella che si ritrova normalmente nel volume (è dissimile come rappresentazione cartografica), e reca un grande cartiglio a sinistra con la dicitura: "1706. Attacchi di Torino DD. all'Ill.mo Sig.r D. Giovanni de Herrera del Consiglio Secreto di S.M.C.ea Soprintend.e Generale della Giustitia Militare, e Gran Cancelliere dello Stato di Milano. da Giac. L'altra tavola, dal titolo "Plan de la Ville et Citadelle de Turin Capilatte (sic, per Capitale)residence ordinaire des ducs de Savoye", è sconosciuta a tutti i repertori da noi consultati; infatti Peyrot, Torino nei secoli, I/n. 94, cita 2 rami incisi dal Bailleau di soggetto analogo e della stessa epoca, ma totalmente diversi dal presente. VAUBAN (Sébastien le Prestre de);
GAROFALO, Biagio (1677-1762)
Rome: Francesco Gonzaga, 1707. Two parts in one volume, 4to (236 x 171 mm). Roman and Hebrew types. Half-title. xvi, 61, [1]; 131 pp. Two woodcut initials, woodcut device on title. 18th-century Italian vellum over pasteboard. Some pale spotting, first few leaves with marginal dampstain and a few small marginal losses, covers lightly soiled. FIRST EDITION of Garofalo's heterodox study of Greek and Jewish poetry. Garofalo was the first Neapolitan to enter the debate concerning Hebrew poetry at the beginning of the 18th century. "In the first decade of the century he was one of the few who dared to publish what he had learned from the ideas of Biblical criticism proposed by Spinoza and Richard Simon. [In this work] Garofalo dealt first with the explosive issue of the authority of the Hebrew Biblical text contending as had Spinoza and Simon, that it was in need of textual revision. He discussed the custom of all ancient peoples of preserving their laws in poetry. In the second part of the work he explained how Greek poets were expected to use popular fictions to persuade the uneducated to chose right behaviors. Such examples supported the Arcadian claim concerning the value of poetry in reforming the bad habits of people. On the issue of whether Hebrew used rhyme or rhythm Garofalo sided with the Protestant Le Clerc" (Harold Samuel Stone, Vico's Cultural History: The Production and Transmission of Ideas in Naples, New York, 1997, p. 198). HOMANN, Johann Baptist
Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist, 1707. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18.75" x 22.5". Page size 22" x 25". This fascinating map shows the competing lunar geographies (seleographies) of Johannes Hevelius and Giovanni Battista Riccioli. Both of the two hemispheres shown the general area of the moon, but their shading and nomenclature vary based on their references. On the left, Hevelius's foundational work strives for an accurate if impossible view, with all features evenly distributed and lit by morning light. His naming conventions, which prevailed until the mid-18th-century, associate lunar landforms with earthly locales such as Sicilia, Mare Mediterranea, and Persia. Hevelius's pioneering work laid the foundation for later revisions such as those by Riccoli and Francesco Grimaldi, which appear on the right hemisphere. This later map introduces the nomenclature that we generally use today, with features of the moon labeled with evocative and sometimes reverential names. Craters and seas are rendered more distinctly, creating an overall more dramatic appearance that compliments the improved knowledge Riccoli and Grimaldi brought to selenography. Around the two hemispheres, diagrams describe the phases if the moon, and two decorative illustrations in the top corners show cherubs looking with a telescope toward a representation of Diana, the ancient Greek goddess of the Moon. Below the map, text panels in Latin explain the science of selenography.The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold and minor foxing at pla … [Click Below for Full Description]

Van der Aa, Pieter, editor
Leyden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1707. 127 parts in twenty-eight volumes (with volume 13 in two), with 107 engraved folding maps and 505 folding plates. Later calf, spines gilt, gilt morocco labels. Some hinges cracked, spines chipping lightly, boards rubbed in places. Some toning and light foxing internally. Still a very good, handsome set. A complete first octavo edition of Pieter Van der Aa's comprehensive collection of memorable voyages translated into Dutch, which includes over 500 engraved views, as well as 107 engraved maps. Van der Aa's spectacular production gathers travel accounts of voyages from 1246- 1696 from reputable sources such as De Bry, Hakluyt, Herrera, de Barros, Thevenot, and includes all of the earliest voyages to the Americas such as Columbus, Vasco de Gama, Cortes, Drake, as well as all other major and minor European voyages. A folio edition was also planned and begun simultaneously, but then abandoned and eventually completed in 1727. Pieter Van der Aa was an accomplished Leiden publisher, who was eventually named chief printer for the city and for the university in 1715. His output consisted largely of repackaging known texts and maps into sets and atlases, as here. Though he lacked creativity, his work is nevertheless remarkable for the exactness and quality of its production in combination with the scope of the projects that he undertook. The texts compiled here are principally gathered from other published works and translated into Dutch, and many of the maps and engravings are taken from the work of Johann Lodewyk Gottfried, whom he credits on t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Rarissima. A very rare map taken from Coronelli's "Teatro della Guerra diviso in XXXXVIII parti" published in Venice (though the front page says Naples) between 1706 and 1709. The collection contains hundreds of views, geographic maps and sea charts depicting the entire world. Ermanno Ermao, who studied Coronelli's production, wrote "it is not easy to determine how many and which are the volumes that belong to the collection ". The volume that describes the Kingdom of Naples has been published in 1707. Some of the maps derive from those already published in the Isolario in 1696, with minor changes; nonetheless, the majority of the views has been realized exclusively for this collection. Copper engraving, in perfect condition. Extremely rare.
