RONKSLEY, William
Printed for Whattoff Boulter, at the Angel, Bible and Crown, in the Poultry, London, 1707. [6], 113pp [i.e 103], 17pp. A-K6, L-2, M1. With two terminal leaves of errata and advertisements. Contemporary blind-ruled sheep, stab-stitched. Worn, with loss and old paper remnants to spine and splitting to joints (though boards held by two, of four, stitching cords). Worming to foot, without significant loss of sense. Presentation copy, inscribed 'J. Jessop. ex dono authoris. D XVI 22' to FFEP, blank top corner of which torn away. An unrecorded eighteenth-century introduction to Latin grammar, and specifically the method of learning Latin expounded in the enduring sixteenth- century Latin grammar textbook generally named after one of its authors, Lilly, by Sheffield schoolmaster William Ronksley (fl.1681-1712). Syntaxis Liliana consists of three parts; the first is a tabulated 'synopsis of Lily's Latin Syntax', the second a 'Full and Perspicuous explication of Lily's Latin Syntax', and the third 'An Alphabetical index Of all the Regent-Words contain'd in the foregoing Explication', designed specifically to assist 'Parsing Latin' and 'Making Latin'. It thus differs entirely, whilst fitting the same educational canon, from Ronksley's two other known works, Regiae grammatiae clavis: or, Two parsing tables (London, 1681), which is little more than a Latin parsing aid, and his introductory primer to English, The child’s weeks-work (London, 1712). Unrecorded: no copies of or reference made to this work in ESTC, COPAC or OCLC. Indeed, the only reference to this book that we can find in … [Click Below for Full Description]

GAROFALO, Biagio (1677-1762)
Rome: Francesco Gonzaga, 1707. Two parts in one volume, 4to (236 x 171 mm). Roman and Hebrew types. Half-title. xvi, 61, [1]; 131 pp. Two woodcut initials, woodcut device on title. 18th-century Italian vellum over pasteboard. Some pale spotting, first few leaves with marginal dampstain and a few small marginal losses, covers lightly soiled. Item #402992 FIRST EDITION of Garofalo's heterodox study of Greek and Jewish poetry. Garofalo was the first Neapolitan to enter the debate concerning Hebrew poetry at the beginning of the 18th century. "In the first decade of the century he was one of the few who dared to publish what he had learned from the ideas of Biblical criticism proposed by Spinoza and Richard Simon. [In this work] Garofalo dealt first with the explosive issue of the authority of the Hebrew Biblical text contending as had Spinoza and Simon, that it was in need of textual revision. He discussed the custom of all ancient peoples of preserving their laws in poetry. In the second part of the work he explained how Greek poets were expected to use popular fictions to persuade the uneducated to chose right behaviors. Such examples supported the Arcadian claim concerning the value of poetry in reforming the bad habits of people. On the issue of whether Hebrew used rhyme or rhythm Garofalo sided with the Protestant Le Clerc" (Harold Samuel Stone, Vico's Cultural History: The Production and Transmission of Ideas in Naples, New York, 1997, p. 198). NEWTON, Sir Isaac
Typis Academicus; Benjamin Tooke, Cambridge; London, 1707. First edition of Newton's treatise on algebra, or 'universal arithmetic,' his "most often read and republished mathematical work" (Whiteside). "Included are 'Newton's identities' providing expressions for the sums of the ith powers of the roots of any polynomial equation, for any integer i [pp. 251-2], plus a rule providing an upper bound for the positive roots of a polynomial, and a generalization, to imaginary roots, of René Descartes' Rule of Signs [pp. 242-5]" (Parkinson, p. 138). About this last rule for determining the number of imaginary roots of a polynomial (which Newton offered without proof), Gjertsen (p. 35) notes: "Some idea of its originality . can be gathered from the fact that it was not until 1865 that the rule was derived in a rigorous manner by James Sylvester." Provenance: Jesuit College at Ghent (ink inscription 'Bibliotheca Collegii Gandavensis Soc[ietatis] Jesu.' and shelfmark on title); extensive marginal annotations by a well-informed contemporary reader. This reader was possibly the English Jesuit Christopher Maier (1697-1767). Born in Durham, England, Maier entered the Society of Jesus in 1715. He taught at Liège, where he became interested in astronomy. In 1750, Maire was commissioned by Pope Benedict XIV to measure two degrees of the meridian from Rome to Rimini with fellow Jesuit Roger Boscovich, with a view to mapping the Papal States; in turn, they proved that the earth is an oblate spheroid, as Newton had proposed in Principia, publishing their results in Litteraria Expeditione (1755 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Funnell, William
London: W. Botham, for James Knapton, 1707. [24],300 [i.e., 302],[18]pp. plus ten engraved plates and five folding engraved maps and charts. Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked, with original gilt leather label. Minor edge wear, corners worn. Two bookplates on front endpapers. Single small wormhole running through text, plates and maps, most noticeable as a small track in the index. Minor toning. Very good. First edition of this important contemporary account of an early circumnavigation of the globe. "It was Funnell, not Dampier, who really circumnavigated the globe on this voyage, as Dampier proceeded only as far as the South Seas. The purpose of the expedition was to harass the Spaniards and take plunder from vessels and towns in South America. Its failure was due to the differences that arose between them. Funnell arrived in England before Dampier and seized the opportunity to compose a relation of his voyage; a task for which he was poorly qualified. Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon
/font. 1707. Hardcover. Book, A leather bound second octavo edition of the most influential contemporary history of the Civil War, 'The History Of The Rebellion and Civil Wars In England' by Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon was a notable English historian and statesman, and grandfather of two English monarchs, Mary II and Queen Anne. He is best known for this work, his 'History of the Rebellion' first published between the years 1702?1704, but written between the years 1646 and 1648 (recording events up until March 1644). This text is often indebted as being the first full-scale, detailed history of the Civil War, and is also important due to the role Clarendon himself played in the events detailed in the work. Moreover, Clarendon's involvement in the action invariably influenced his account, with the work being written from a royalist perspective, hence advancing Clarendon's own viewpoint and politics. Indeed, the work was even involved in the publishing war between supporters of the rival Roundheads and Cavaliers. Complete in three volumes, bound in six. Featuring a portrait frontispiece of Edward, Earl of Clarendon to each volume. Condition: In a uniform full speckled calf binding with embossed design to boards. Externally, slight shelfwear to extremities. Very slight handling marks to boards. Slight rubbing to spines. Lacking spine labels to volume I part 1 and part 2, and volume III part 1. Captain John Stevens
1707. Full calf leather binding with gilt lettering to spine. The first edition of this scarce and important work. John Stevens (c.1662-1726), was a translator and antiquary. He settled in London in 1695 to make a living as a professional writer, putting his command of Spanish and Portuguese to practical, though not lucrative, use. Over the next thirty years he published over twenty translations, mainly from the Spanish, in addition to histories of Spain and Portugal and a painstakingly researched Spanish dictionary. He satisfied the contemporary taste for books of travel by making available some of the classics of the conquista: accounts written from an Iberian, rather than an English point of view. Though self-deprecating about his literary style, he produced a lively and successful translation of Quevedo's comic satires. He preferred fact to fiction, and required a tale to carry a moral. The austere and devout Quevedo, champion of absolute monarchy, was his favourite writer, and in 1709 he recruited him to the Tory cause by translating two of his political works in defence of Dr Henry Sacheverell. CONDITION In a full calf binding. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the spine which is chipped, and to the front board which is damaged with loss of leather. The corners are bumped and the boards are also rubbed in places. There is an ownership plate to the front pastedown. The front board is detached but present, and the rear inner hinge is strained. The binding is firm and the rear board is attached, though by the cords only. Internally the book is bright … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE LA CHAUSSE (Michaelis Angeli Causei)
Romae Typis J. Francisci Chracas, prod S. Marcum in vai Cursus...Supeiorum Permissu, 1707. Romae Typis J. Francisci Chracas, prodè S. Marcum in vai Cursus...Supeiorum Permissu, 1707. Folio, 320 x 210 mms., pp. [xii], 136 [137 - 149 Index, 150 blank, 151 errata, 152 blank, full-page engraved title-page preceding letter-press title-page in red and black, with engraved vignette, engraved portrait of author opposite first page of text, and 184 full-page engraved plates of Roman individuals, gods and goddesses, utensils, etc., contemporary vellum (soiled), olive morocco label; title-page slightly soiled, some leaves browned, but a reasonably good copy with very impressions of the plates, and the armorial bookplate of John Towneley on the front paste-down end-paper. I would guess that John Towneley (the family name was also spelled Townley) was the uncle and bibliophile John Towneley (1731 - 1813) of the famous collector of antiquities in the 18th century, Charles Towneley (1737 - 1805. John Towneley inherited his nephew's estate, and this book was perhaps in the family collection. First published in 1690 in Rome De La Chausse's book proved to be both useful and popular, with this second edition appearing in less than twenty years and with other reprints and editions well into the 18th century. Although he was born in Paris, La Chausse (1660-1724) spent most of his life in Rome, amassing a collection of antiquities and was for all practical purposes an early archaeologist. The portrait at the beginning of text was made when he was only 30, and his collecting achieveme … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAUBAN, Sébastien Le Prestre de.
[Rouen: no printer,] 1707. Quarto (241 x 190 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine elaborately decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label, sprinkled edges. Very skilful repairs to spine ends and corners; some light spotting, stronger in places; a very good copy. Large folding table, "Formulaire qui peut servir pour tout un pays", at page 192. Very rare first edition, first issue (with B4 in uncancelled state: on p. 16, a setier is given as weighing 170, rather than 240 pounds, here corrected in a contemporary hand), and a notable rarity, of "an erudite economic work much in advance of its time, and distinguished both by accuracy of method and breadth of view" (Palgrave), "creditable alike to the heart and the head of its illustrious author"(McCulloch). Carpenter lists six other printings dated 1707, all in smaller format, and eight subsequent editions before 1710, including the English translation A Project for a Royal Tythe (1708; reissued in 1710 as An Essay for a General Tax). "Though the book was published anonymously, and only a few copies issued [for circulation among friends], Vauban had to submit to the mortification of seeing it 'pilloried' by the parliament, while he himself incurred the displeasure of the king [Louis XIV]. A few weeks later he died" (Palgrave). Although the renowned soldier-engineer Vauban (1633-1707) wrote on a very wide variety of subjects apart from economics, the Projet d'une Dixme royale is an outstanding work in the field of public finance. Its two most notable features are its understanding of the central role of fiscal policy in … [Click Below for Full Description]
