[BUFFON, Georges Louis Leclerc and] Bernard Germain Étienne de la Ville-sur-Illon, comte de LACÉPÈDE.
The reptile and amphibian section of Buffon's monumental work on the general and particular natural history. Many species (frogs, snakes, lizards, salamanders, turtles, etc.) are depicted in their natural habitat. The work is here in the new edition published at Amsterdam and Dordrecht, the only quarto edition to rival the original French Imprimerie Royale edition. The last 2 leaves in vol. 1 give a list of the plates for both volumes.Georges Louis Leclerc (1707-1788) -- in 1717 his father became Comte de Buffon and Louis XV later made Georges Comte de Buffon -- was an inconspicuous student who only showed a special talent for mathematics. Initially he combined a career in finance with one in science, translating important works by Hales and Newton into French. In 1739 Buffon became director of the Jardin du Roi, later the Jardin des Plantes, and the Histoire naturelle may have originated as a description of the royal collection. It appeared from 1749 to 1804 and eventually comprised 44 volumes. Buffon was assisted among others by the anatomist Louis Daubenton, and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.From the Stedelijk Gymnasium Bibliotheek, with its stamp on title-pages and a few flyleaves. The present series on reptiles and amphibians had been followed (rather than preceded) by the series on minerals, so that the bindings are numbered 25 and 26. Bindings show some wear and abrasions.Landwehr, Coloured plates 45; Nissen, ZBI 678; Schuh's Biobliography of mineralogy (online ed.), Buffon no. 4..

Recent speckled calf, covers panelled in blind, five raised bands and red morocco label with gilt lettering to spine. [London :] The Booksellers of London and Westminster Rare late edition of Seller?s Pocket Book, seemingly the text block of the Jeremiah Seller and Charles Price sr. printing, but with the title-page re-engraved to erase their imprint. This was presumably done at the end of the Seller and Price partnership, when the partners went bankrupt, circa 1707. The Pocket Book is of notoriously difficult collation; it was first published in 1676 or 1677, and re-issued frequently thereafter to about 1707, with some of the composition due to the whim of the purchaser. It was a handy pocket-sized vademecum for the gentleman. As described on the title-page, there are sections to answer all sorts of problems. The first section, not listed on the title-page, is calendar-related: tables for the twelve months, tables to find Easter Day, the New Moon, the day of the month, a perpetual almanac, sign of the Moon and so on. The other principal grouping in this copy is geometrical and trigonometrical tables and diagrams. At the end is the set of maps of the World and continents, the Americas on two sheets, North and South America; these maps were also used in editions of Seller?s pocket atlases, the New Systeme of Geography [1684, and later], and Atlas Terrestris [ca. 1685, and later]. RARE! 1707; Projet d'Une Dixme Royale by Sebastien Le Prestre Vauban (Marquis de). Text is in the French language. Projet d'Une Dixme Royale by Sebastien Le Prestre Vauban (Marquis de). 1707. Text is in the French language. This is a rare Dutch edition published the year of the original (1707, which was published in Rouen). The vignette on the title page identifies the printer and the location; it is Henri Schelte, in Amsterdam, successor of Antoine Schelte and Abraham Wolfgang. Hardcover is in half Morocco red, with gilt and five raised bands on spine. The spine also has an unidentified coat of arms of a previous owner. The title page has a stamp of the Grand Seminaire de Versailles; this stamp is on several other pages as well. Has a previous owner's stamp, "Frederic O. Sargent." Sargent was a corporal in the 415th Night Fighter Squadron in World War II who, after the war, became a Fulbright scholar, studying at The Sorbonne, and later taught economics at several universities in the United States. The handwritten notes on the front end papers, which are in French, may be his notes/commentary, if not from the original owner. Overall, this book is in excellent condition given its age. Has a Table of Contents as well as several fold-out charts/tables, ribbon bookmark, 264 pages. Hardcover has wear and tear, mainly at edges, corners, and spine areas. Pages have discoloration/tanning from age, some small corner creases, a few soil spots, may have some small tears although I did not see any. Pages are tight and the binding is secure. Rondinini, Filippo
1707. Illustrated with two engraved folding plates in Part I, including the façade of the basilica and floor plan, and four engraved folding plates in Part II, including floor plans and overview with landscape setting. Some scattered foxing and toning. 4to. Old vellum, some slight yellowing, minor staining, wear to extremities. Rome (Franciscus Gonzaga) 1707. Rossetti 8895, Cicognara 3858, Olschki 17975, Ranghiasci 608. The Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo al Celio was built on the Caelian Hill of Rome in 398, over the home of two Roman soldiers named John and Paul, who were martyred under Emperor Julian in 362. The church was damaged many times through history and has been restored and enlarged. It is the station church of the first Friday in Lent. The Casamari Abbey is a Cistercian abbey outside of Rome, originally founded in the 9th century as a Benedictine monastery and initally expanded in the 11th century. According to Rossetti's bibliography, three titles total were written by Rondinini and published in a single volume by Gonzaga in 1706-1707. The third title - and first in the list in their entry - is De S. Clemente Papa et Martyre Eiusque Basilica in Urbe Roma. Scarce institutionally.

FLEETWOOD, William, Bishop of Ely.
London: Printed for Charles Harper, 1707. Octavo (192 x 114 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, red label to spine, spine gilt to compartments, covers panelled in blind with foliate cornerpieces, red speckled edges. Bookplate to pastedown. Discreetly refurbished with joints and extremities repaired. A very good, clean copy. First edition of this landmark in the history of econometrics. Chronicon Preciosum was the first major historical survey of prices, wages and income. In answer to a question about an Oxford Fellowship, Fleetwood set out to determine historical changes in the value of money. "But his treatise took a wider range; it brought together all the information he could find on the value of money and the prices of commodities during the Middle Ages in England; and it is still well worth consulting" (Palgrave II, 89). "Although in his price comparison Fleetwood did not go so far as to think of weighting his individual items according to their importance in a shopping basket, he did see the need to have a single magnitude, however approximate, as an index of change" (Stone). The index worked out by Fleetwood has proved notably accurate: the figures in E.H. Phelps Brown's and S.V. Hopkins' 1956 assessment of seven centuries of prices of consumables revealed a remarkable proximity to Fleetwood's results. 1707. London: , 17981803. Folio (430 x 263 mm). Contemporary half calf, titles in gilt on red morocco spine labels, raised bands ruled in gilt, marbled boards. Text in double column. Engraved hand-coloured folding map, 11 engraved plates depicting distillery apparatus, tables throughout. Binding expertly restored, labels renewed, a little rubbed, internally browned, and with scattered foxing; a very good copy. First collected edition of these fifteen parliamentary reports, including Sylvester Douglas's indispensable two-part survey of the Scottish whisky industry, and three further reports, together illustrating the culmination of parliament's continued attempts to regulate the Scottish distilleries over the course of the eighteenth century following the Act of the Union in 1707. First is a series of three reports submitted by William Eden between 24 December 1783 and 23 March 1784 and discussing the smuggling of various commodities, including whisky. The first of these three also touches on "frauds in the internal duties on brewery, distillery, malt"; the second focuses on Scotland, demonstrating "both the forcible and piratical practices, as also the inland smuggling of foreign goods", and outlines details regarding exemption from and evasion of distillery duties; the third proposes methods of preventing the smuggling trade, and gives a list of bounties, premiums and allowances. The year, 1784, saw the introduction of the Wash Act, one of the formative moments in the history of the distilleries. It lowered whisky duties in England and the Scottish Lowlands, but maintaine … [Click Below for Full Description]
