VAUBAN (Maréchal S. Le Prestre de)
S.l., marque au Quaerendo, 1707, pl. veau brun époque, dos orné, coiffes et coins lég. usés. Bon exemplaire. ¶ "This is one of the outstanding performances in the field of public finance, unsurpassed, before or after, in the neatness and cogency of the argument... Nobody ever understood better the true relation between facts and argument. It is this that makes him an economic classic in the eulogistic sense of the work, and a forerunner of modern tendencies" (J. A. Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, pp. 197-8) - Kress 2584-5 - Goldsmiths 4432 - En français dans le texte, 134 - INED, 4397.

1707. Condition: Akzeptabel. [Attributes: First Edition]

Technique: Coloured copper engraving with original colour, 48 x 56 cm./ Altkolorierter Kupferstich, 48 x 56 cm Seltene altkolorierte Karte zeigt die Provinz Södermanland in Schweden. Gut erhalten. Detailed map with original colour and title in Swedish shows Södermanland, a historical province or landskap on the south eastern coast of Sweden. It was made in 1743 by a Swedish engraver Eric Geringius (1707 - 1747). Geringius studied theology in Uppsala, Sweden, from 1725, when he also learned the art of copper engraving by J. van der Aveelen. From 1780 he lived in Stockolm, where he worked as engraver and illustrator. The map was published separetely by Kongliga Lantmäteri Contoiret (Royal Institute of Surveyors). The institute started publishing separately issued maps of Sweden in 1739 with a goal to map the country in uniform maps. The first map was the grand "Charta öfwer Mälaren" by Jacob Nordencreutz. The maps Upland, Västmanland, Södermanland, Nerike, Skåne and a map of Sweden were issued in the 1740s and early 1750s. The next map - map of Medelpad was not published until 1769. It was followed by the series of maps in the next 25 years, the last one being harta öfver Heinola Höfdingedöme in 1793. Many parts of the country were not covered. The maps were never sold bound in an atlas since the project was never finished. ORIGINAL

[BUFFON, George Louis Leclerc, comte de].
1707. Condition: Etat correct.

GAROFALO, Biagio (1677-1762)
Rome: Francesco Gonzaga, 1707. Two parts in one volume, 4to (236 x 171 mm). Roman and Hebrew types. Half-title. xvi, 61, [1]; 131 pp. Two woodcut initials, woodcut device on title. 18th-century Italian vellum over pasteboard. Some pale spotting, first few leaves with marginal dampstain and a few small marginal losses, covers lightly soiled. Item #402992 FIRST EDITION of Garofalo's heterodox study of Greek and Jewish poetry. Garofalo was the first Neapolitan to enter the debate concerning Hebrew poetry at the beginning of the 18th century. "In the first decade of the century he was one of the few who dared to publish what he had learned from the ideas of Biblical criticism proposed by Spinoza and Richard Simon. [In this work] Garofalo dealt first with the explosive issue of the authority of the Hebrew Biblical text contending as had Spinoza and Simon, that it was in need of textual revision. He discussed the custom of all ancient peoples of preserving their laws in poetry. In the second part of the work he explained how Greek poets were expected to use popular fictions to persuade the uneducated to chose right behaviors. Such examples supported the Arcadian claim concerning the value of poetry in reforming the bad habits of people. On the issue of whether Hebrew used rhyme or rhythm Garofalo sided with the Protestant Le Clerc" (Harold Samuel Stone, Vico's Cultural History: The Production and Transmission of Ideas in Naples, New York, 1997, p. 198). Beverley's History, one of the most outspoken books of Americanism before the War of Independence, satirized the 'Rapacious and Arbitrary' English governors and objected to the 'heavy Impositions' put upon the American colonies by the English, while celebrating Virginia's history and laws, featuring stories of early Virginia-including the Lost Colony and Pocahontas saving Captain John Smith-which became standard features of American history. GROTIUS, Hugo (1583-1645)
Leipzig, Friedrich Groschuff 1707. . 4to. VI,84,[4],1248,[40]p. With an engraved allegorical frontispiece with inset portrait of Grotius, and an engraved vignette. Contemp. panelled calf, back with gilt lettered label, sprinkled edges, very light wear to upper joint. A very nice copy. First German edition of Grotius' great De jure belli ac pacis' (1625). This translation is preceded by a preface by Christian Thomasius: Von der Historie des Rechts der Natur bis auf Grotium; von der Wichtigkeit des Grotianischen Werck's, und von dem Nutzen gegenwartiger Ubersetzung'. A second German edition, translated by Johann Niclas Serlin appeared in 1709. That edition was, contrary to the present, heavily annotated. The translator in his preface to the present translation however says that he preferred to translate the book unchanged, because the annotations and comments of other writers often obscure the work rather than clarify it. *Ter Meulen & Diermanse 662. Robert Beverley
Chez Thomas Lombrail, Amsterdam, 1707. 12mo; [4], 432, [16]pp, plus 14 finely executed plates (based on the engravings from the first part of Theodor De Bry's Grand Voyages) and a folding table. Engraved title page, with the coat of arms of Virginia, precedes the printed title page. Translated from the English ("The history and present state of Virginia, in four parts," first published in 1705). Contemporary full calf, the spine, in six compartments, very richly gilt with a label lettered in gilt. A very handsome, well-preserved copy Sabin 5116. Howe B-410. Church 821. JCB I 93. First French Edition (with a new title page) of the first history of the Virginia colony "penned by a native and the best contemporary account of its aboriginal tribes and the life of its early settlers." (Howes) Sabin calls Beverley the "best authority," affording the "most vivid, comprehensive, instructive, and entertaining picture of Virginia at the date of his writing" and quotes Pinkerton: "A work of considerable merit." Beverley's History, one of the most outspoken books of Americanism before the War of Independence, satirized the 'Rapacious and Arbitrary' English governors and objected to the 'heavy Impositions' put upon the American colonies by the English, while celebrating Virginia's history and laws, featuring stories of early Virginia-including the Lost Colony and Pocahontas saving Captain John Smith-which became standard features of American history. Even so, large parts of the History derived from existing sources, though Beverley often gave even the borrowed material his own interpret … [Click Below for Full Description]
