[BEVERLEY, Robert, ca. 1673-1722]
Amsterdam: Chez Thomas Lombrail, 1707. 12mo; [4], 432, [16]pp, plus 14 finely executed plates (based on the engravings from the first part of Theodor De Bry's Grand Voyages) and a folding table. Engraved title page, with the coat of arms of Virginia, precedes the printed title page. Translated from the English ("The history and present state of Virginia, in four parts," first published in 1705). Contemporary full calf, the spine, in six compartments, very richly gilt with a red morocco label lettered in gilt. A very handsome, well-preserved copy Sabin 5116. Howe B-410. Church 821. JCB I 93. First French Edition (with a new title page) of the first history of the Virginia colony "penned by a native and the best contemporary account of its aboriginal tribes and the life of its early settlers." (Howes) Sabin calls Beverley the "best authority," affording the "most vivid, comprehensive, instructive, and entertaining picture of Virginia at the date of his writing" and quotes Pinkerton: "A work of considerable merit." Beverley's History, one of the most outspoken books of Americanism before the War of Independence, satirized the 'Rapacious and Arbitrary' English governors and objected to the 'heavy Impositions' put upon the American colonies by the English, while celebrating Virginia's history and laws, featuring stories of early Virginia--including the Lost Colony and Pocahontas saving Captain John Smith--which became standard features of American history. Even so, large parts of the History derived from existing sources, though Beverley often gave even the borrowed material his … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAPIN, Denis
One folding engraved plate. 64 pp. 8vo, cont. polished calf (foot of spine a little chipped, browned as usual), spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Kassel: J. Estienne, 1707. First edition and a book of considerable rarity. By 1695, Papin had left his teaching position at Marburg and was given a place in the court of the Landgrave of Hesse in Kassel. Here he continued to devise a number of pumps and to work on steam pressure. "In 1705, Papin heard from Leibniz of Savery's engine, and received from him a sketch of it. In 1707 Papin published [in the present work] details of a new engine, a modified Savery engine -- not a modified Huygens' engine, as his previous one was...In 1707 Papin used his steam engine (originally conceived as a pumping engine) to drive a model boat on the river Fulda at Cassel; the pumping engine forcing up water to turn a water-wheel, which drove the paddles."-Wolf, A History of Science, Technology, and Philosophy, I, p. 550. Apart from the inevitable browning, a fine copy. In our copy there is a cancel label pasted to the title below "Feu." which corrects the reading to: "Mise en lumiere par mr. D. Papin" with a further cancel label pasted over the "mr." ❧ D.S.B., X, pp. 292-93. s.n.t, 1707. [Click Below for Full Description]

METHOLD (William) [PURCHAS (Samuel)]
Te Leyden By Pieter Vandera Aa, 1707. FIRST EDITION. Slender 8vo, pp. 37 [38 - 42 Index], folding engraved map, 2 folding engraved plates, engraved vignette on title-page, recently rebound in half calf, spine blocked in gilt, marbled boards. A very good copy. The English civil servant William Method (1590 - 1653) was born in Norfolk; he acquired fluency in several foreign languages, including Latin, Dutch, French, and Persian. He began service for the East India Company in 1616, and this account of his experiences there was one of several reports he made to his employers. ODNB notes, "Apart from forthright letters and reports to the company, partly published, he composed a 'Relation of Golconda', a brilliant description of that part of India, which appeared in the 1626 edition of Samuel Purchas's Purchas his Pilgrimage. It included brief descriptions of the kingdoms of Arakan, Pegu, and Tenasserim, based on trade information, not personal observation." This would appear to be the first translation into Dutch of the material published in 1625. Cordier Indosinica, 415. OCLC locates several copies in continental libraries, and UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, and the John Carter Brown Library in the USA; Copac adds BL. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
