BUFFON, Georges Louis Leclerc and] Bernard Germain Étienne de la Ville-sur-Illon, comte de LACÉPÈDE.
1707. The reptile and amphibian section of Buffon's monumental work on the general and particular natural history. Many species (frogs, snakes, lizards, salamanders, turtles, etc.) are depicted in their natural habitat. The work is here in the new edition published at Amsterdam and Dordrecht, the only quarto edition to rival the original French Imprimerie Royale edition. The last 2 leaves in vol. 1 give a list of the plates for both volumes.Georges Louis Leclerc (1707-1788) -- in 1717 his father became Comte de Buffon and Louis XV later made Georges Comte de Buffon -- was an inconspicuous student who only showed a special talent for mathematics. Initially he combined a career in finance with one in science, translating important works by Hales and Newton into French. In 1739 Buffon became director of the Jardin du Roi, later the Jardin des Plantes, and the Histoire naturelle may have originated as a description of the royal collection. It appeared from 1749 to 1804 and eventually comprised 44 volumes. Buffon was assisted among others by the anatomist Louis Daubenton, and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.From the Stedelijk Gymnasium Bibliotheek, with its stamp on title-pages and a few flyleaves. The present series on reptiles and amphibians had been followed (rather than preceded) by the series on minerals, so that the bindings are numbered 25 and 26. Bindings show some wear and abrasions.l Landwehr, Coloured plates 45; Nissen, ZBI 678; Schuh's Biobliography of mineralogy (online ed.), Buffon no. 4.

A few weeks later he died" (Palgrave). FLOYER, JOHN. - [THE FIRST PULSE-WATCH]
London, 1707-10. 8vo. Two contemporary uniform full calf bindings with five raised bands to spine, single gilt line-borders to boards and a blindstamped double "wave"-border at hinges. Gilt tome-numbers to spines and a very small old paper label to lower spines. All edges of boards blindstamped. Exceptionally nice and fresh. Also internally very nice, clean and crisp, with only very minimal brownspotting. (26), 440; (8), XXVIII, 468 pp. Fully complete, also with the advertisement-leaf. ¶ The seminal first edition - extremely rarely found with both volumes in contemporary, uniform bindings - of Floyer's magnum opus, in which he introduces the invention of the pulse-watch - the first instrument to accurately count the pulse and with which to make regular observations on the pulse-rate, constituting a giant step forward in the art of diagnosis. Apart from being the first to accurately measure the pulse and the attempt to establish relationships between the pulse rate and conditions of health and disease, Floyer's "Pulse-watch" also constitutes the invention of the second hand on a watch, a feature which has been on all normal watches ever since the appearance of this foundational work. Furthermore, with the present work, "Floyer may justifiably be credited with the invention of the first efficient instrument of precision to merit application in clinical practise. Al-Tugrai, Hassan ibn ´Ali.
1707. Small 4to. (20), 46 pp. With engr. title vignette. Contemp. vellum. The accounts regarding the precise number of copies salvaged from the wreck vary: Schnurrer mentions 5 or 6, Ehrencron-Müller states 50. In any case, the number of copies extant is very small and thus the book is extremely rare. It contains the poem "Lamiyat al-Agam" by al-Hasan Ibn-Ali at-Tugrai (c. 1061-1121) in the Arabic original with a Latin translation and copious commentary by the Danish theologian Matthias Anchersen (1682-1741). "A complaint over the unfortunate circumstances of his times and over his own lot" (cf. GAL). - Some browning and foxing due to paper. The author's personal copy, inscribed to his brother Ansgar on the front flyleaf. Smitskamp 318. Schnurrer 199. Ehrencron-Müller I, 113. Brunet V, 875. Ebert 23020. Cf. GAL I, p. 247 (the 1717 ed.).

CHEVALIER Nicolas:

[NEWTON, Isaac]
4 p.l., 343 pp. 8vo, fine antique panelled calf (faint & unimportant dampstaining in gutter to first & final few leaves), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Cambridge: Typis Academicis; London: B. Tooke, 1707. First edition of what I believe to be the scarcest of all of Newton's books on the market. This was, in the 18th century, the most popular mathematical work by Newton, being reprinted a number of times both on the Continent and in England. Newton compiled the Universal Arithmetic in a "cavalier fashion by plundering the papers connected with his Observations on Kinckhuysen early in the 1670s. Since things Newton touched had a way of turning to gold, the work did not merely summarize algebra but advanced the science - in its analysis of imaginary roots, for example. Leibniz reviewed the published work anonymously in the Acta eruditorum in highly laudatory terms [in 1708]."-Westfall, Never at Rest. A Biography of Isaac Newton, p. 398. Newton's disciple and successor in the Lucasian chair at Cambridge, William Whiston, edited and published the present work. The book also contains Halley's "Method of finding Roots of Equations Arithmetically," which was originally published in the Philosophical Transactions of 1694. This is the first time I have handled this book. Over the years, I have had, with the exception of this book, all of Newton's printed publications. This book is truly uncommon. Very good copy. Stamp on title of Stonyhurst College. ? Babson 199.

[ANCILLON Charles].
I, 638).- Gay, III, 1239.- Caillet, I, 39.
