Melchior Steidl (Innsbruck 1657 - Munich 1727):
1707. Pen, brown ink and watercolor on paper; 430 x 620 mm; watermark: crown The Kaisersaal of the Neue Residenz in Bamberg is one of the most important imperial halls north of the Alps. The illusionistic ceiling painting was created by Melchior Steidl between 1707 and 1709 and represents one of the heights in his career. Melchior Steidl was a pupil of the court painter Johann Anton Gumpp (1654-1719) in Munich. Until 1715 he worked almost exclusively for church clients in numerous places in Austria, Bavaria, Franconia, Hesse and Swabia, usually commissioned with the execution of ceiling paintings. Steidl is considered one of the most important fresco painters of the southern German Baroque of his generation. Gumpp’s and Steidl’s illusionism, influenced by Pietro da Cortona and Andrea Pozzo, helped to raise the meaning and autonomy of ceiling painting in their area. Steidl remained a fresco painter throughout his life, faithful to the artistic imprints of his early years. There exist seven other designs for the Kaisersaal. They depict the four world monarchies (Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München), two smaller allegories for seasons and times of day (Munich, private collection) and another quadratura design. Like all these designs, the present drawing differs in several elements from the actual ceiling painting, indicating a profuse revision of his own designs by Steidl during the working process. It is also known that the client, Prince-Bishop and Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn (1655-1729), demanded several changes to Steidl’s designs. Some of the illusionistic eleme … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOCKE, John
J.H. for Awnsham and John Churchill, at the Black Swan in Pater-Noster-Row. 1707 1ed John Locke Bible Paraphrases & Notes Epistles of Paul Philosophy RARE “I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts.” – John Locke A rare 1707 first edition of John Locke’s ‘Paraphrases on the Epistles of St. Paul’. Locke was mostly known for his contributions to philosophical and political theories, but he did write a series of commentaries on the New Testament letters of Paul. These notes only contributed to the ambiguity of Locke’s theological views – he was completely against atheism but many of his views supported cosmology to prove God’s existence. ‘Paraphrase and Notes on the Epistles of Paul’ was not published until after Locke’s death. It includes his commentary on Galatians, Corinthians, Romans, and Ephesians. Item number: #9521 Price: $3500 LOCKE, John A paraphrase and notes on the epistles of St. Paul To the Galatians, I & II Corinthians, Romans, Ephesians. To which is prefix'd, An essay for the understanding of St. Paul's epistles, by consulting St. Paul himself. *** [English translation available upon request. Cervantes Saavedra - Fernández de Avellaneda, Alonso,
Londres, Mortier, 1707. Nouvelle Edition revuë & corrigée. 13,5 x 8 cm.

Frankfurt a.M, Gleditsch, 1707. 8 Bll., 112 S. Pappband d. Zt.
