Courtilz, Gatien de, Sieur de Sandras
London: Printed: Sold by J. Woodward in St. Christopher's Church-yard Thredneedle street; and J. Morphew, near Stationers-Hall, 1707. 5 unn. p., 413 [some out of order, some misnumbered], list of books printed and sold by Ralph Smith, at the Bible under the Royal Exchange in Cornhil, 5 p. entitled, "The French Publisher's Preface" at the end. This is a work of fiction, originally published without attribution in French in 1678. The preface to the French publication is very much tongue-in-cheek, in which its author and others express their wonder and incredulity at some of "Count de Rochefort's" tales but then express confidence in the reliability and honor of those who testify to the facts. The Count and a character from another novel were appropriated and combined to form a character in Alexander Dumas's "The Three Musketeers." This book has been nicely bound in half-leather and marbled paper, with gilt title and date on the spine, all edges gilt. There are notes in very, very pale pencil correcting some of the page numbering and on the free endpaper. The front cover is detached and the front endpaper is cracked. The spine is firm and the text is secure, so repair would not be difficult. The extremities are a little worn. The perforated library ownership mark is on the title page, with a "withdrawn" stamp on the other side. There is a stamped library mark on the last page and a neat bookplate inside the front cover. The library call number is written in ink on the spine. The text printing is uneven (some printing is darker than other, etc.) and some pages have a little dar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Rarissima. A very rare map taken from Coronelli's "Teatro della Guerra diviso in XXXXVIII parti" published in Venice (though the front page says Naples) between 1706 and 1709. The collection contains hundreds of views, geographic maps and sea charts depicting the entire world. Ermanno Ermao, who studied Coronelli's production, wrote "it is not easy to determine how many and which are the volumes that belong to the collection ". The volume that describes the Kingdom of Naples has been published in 1707. Some of the maps derive from those already published in the Isolario in 1696, with minor changes; nonetheless, the majority of the views has been realized exclusively for this collection. Copper engraving, in perfect condition. Extremely rare. Venezia Venice 180 130

Lucano Marco Anneo
Antonio de' Rossi, 1707. In 4°piccolo, pagg. Dorso abilmente restaurato.

Faes, Johann
Hieronymus Friedrich Hoffmann, Braunschweig; Zell, 1707. 1 Bl. - Beigebunden 1.: "Zugaben, Des weinenden … [Click Below for Full Description]

Buffon G., 1707-88
Buffon G., 1707-88 - Carte Des Deux Regions Polaires, Paris / 1778 Rare map of the World on a polar projection, showing a contemporary knowledge of the Polar latitudes, including the routes of Abel Tasman, James Cook, Edmund Halley., Furneaux and Marion in the South Polar Regions. The map is derived from works on the French Exploration of the South Pacific issued after 1773. The treatment of the NW Coast of America also reflects the information derived from Russian explorers in the mid-18th Century. This map is from the Comte de Buffon's Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière. Specifically, it occurs at the end of Vol. 5 of the 7-volume Supplement a l'Histoire Naturelle, published in Paris in 1778. Size of the leaf: 25x44 cm., small crac with a little loss on upper right margin. Buffon, Georges, Comte de (1707-1788) French naturalist who became keeper of the French botanical gardens. At first, he believed in Leibniz's Law of Continuity and disagreed with Linnaeus's system of nomenclature, maintaining that a species was an artificial category. He changed his mind, however, when he found that the offspring of some plant hybridizations were sterile. He proposed identifying species through their reproductive histories, with two animals belonging to the same species if they can produce fertile offspring. His monumental life's work, Historie Naturelle (Natural History) (1749), ran to 36 volumes and tried to show the continuity of nature. Buffon had no concept of evolution, believing that species are fixed. Buffon was a believer in Vitalism, Eric Weisstein's World of Chemist … [Click Below for Full Description]
