GAROFALO, Biagio.
Roma, Franc. (D.B. It., vol. 52, pp. 362-4). Haym p. 494, n. 14..

LANCISI, Giovanni Maria.
Romae: Typis Jo: Francisci Buagni, 1707. FIRST EDITION. The foundation of cardiac pathology. Physician to Pope Clement XI, Lancisi undertook the study of sudden deaths under a papal directive after an unusual number of cases had occurred in Rome the previous year. This was a remarkable initiative by the Pope, and must be the first epidemiological study of a non-communicable condition. Autopsies of the deceased persons showed that the deaths were often due to hypertrophy and dilation of the heart, and to various kinds of valve defects. Lancisi was the first to describe valvular vegetations, and his book includes an historical survey of the literature and a classification of the cardiac diseases then recognised. G&M 2731. Lilly, Notable Medical Books, 103. Leibowitz, History of coronary heart disease, 74-5. Willius & Dry 76-77. Long, History of pathology, 109-110. This copy has the title page in the state with engraved papal arms, rather than woodcut arms or skull-and-crossbones device. No priority has been assigned. See Kligfield, "Survey of variant title-page vignettes in Lancisi's De Subitaneis Mortibus", in J. Hist. Med., 38, 336-39 (1983).4to, pp. (xxiv), 243, (1). Including the first leaf (blank) and the half-title, fine engraved arms of Pope Clement XI on title, errata on last page, woodcut initials. Contemporary vellum. Very light browning on 2 or 3 leaves, tear in fore-edge margin of Aa1, but a fine, crisp copy.

Montfaucon, Bernard de (ed.).
1707. 2 volumes. Folio. With 4 engraved plates, and 3 woodcut illustrations in the text. Each volume with an engraved headpiece, the first incorporating the coat of arms of Pope Clement XI, and the second that of Jean-Paul Bignon. Contemporary calf, richly gold-tooled spine and binding edges. First edition, second issue, of a monumental collection of Greek voyages, often overlooked in the literature, including the first complete edition of Cosmas of Alexandria's celebrated "Christiana Topographia". Cosmas, a merchant from Alexandria, sailed in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf and visited Ethiopia ca. 530. Though he was known as "Indicopleustes", or Indian Voyager, it is doubtful whether he actually visited India. In his "Christiana Topographia" Cosmas aimed to show that the earth was flat and the cosmos shaped like rectangular vaulted box. Several of the engravings in the present volume, reproduced from a manuscript, illustrates this view. In one of them the earth is shown as a rectangle with three notches, one of them representing the Arabian Gulf, and the whole surrounded by a an ocean, with in the east another rectangle representing Paradise, out of which four rivers flow into the inhabited world. Slightly browned, with some occasional minor foxing or thumbing, and some faint stains, otherwise in very good condition. Binding also very good, only slightly rubbed and the spine of the second volume slightly damaged at the top. Howgego, to 1800, C199. Cf. Dilke, "Cartography in the Byzantine Empire", in: Harley & Woodward (eds.), The history of cartography I, pp. 261-263.

(Courtilz De Sandras); Pierre Marteau
Cologne: Pierre Marteau , 1707. Black and red title page with engraved illustration. Illustrated with a large fold-out map at front of Spain, two engraved portraits, and six fold-out battle plan maps. Attributed to Courtilz de Sandras. "Pierre Marteau (French for Peter Hammer), was the imprint of a supposed publishing house. Allegedly located in Cologne from the 17th century onward, contemporaries were well aware that such a publishing house never actually existed. Instead, the imprint was a fiction under which publishers and printers --- in the Netherlands, France and Germany ---evaded the open identification with books they published....Research has hinted at Amsterdam publisher Elzevier as the man who invented the imprint." Browning to the text with some old brown ink stains on few pages. Three battle plan maps with old repairs but all maps are complete. Handsomely rebound in full brown leather with the old color patterned endpapers. The spine is decorated and lettered in gilt. Quite scarce. . Full-Leather.

LEIBNITZ Gottfried Wilhelm

[Click Below for Full Description]

DOPPELMAYR, J. G and HOMANN, Iohanne Bapt.
Iohann Bapt. Homann and Johann Gabriel Dopplemayr, Nuremberg, 1707. 495 x 574 mm (19-3/8 x 22-3/4 x 24-1/8 inches) plate size plus margins. copper etching, one sheet printed in black, coloured by hand. The map illustrates the solar system by Copernicus with the orbits of the planets and the twelve constellations of the zodiac. The map shows the extent of the knowledge of the solar system and astronomy at the time. The center of the map shows a wonderful representation of the solar system with the sun in the center, the concept which Copernicus had introduced. The lower left corner vignette depicts the eclipse of the sun on May 12, 1706, the others the various theories on the orbits of the planets. Interestingly, this vignette shows California as an island. The upper left vignette shows the then known planets and the Sun; the planets are represented with their diameters to some scale to each other. The upper right corner shows heavenly clouds and solar systems thought to exist elsewhere in the stars. The lower right vignette shows the Goddess of Astronomy, Urania, and below her are three cosmological systems, the Greek, Claudius Ptolemy's, which is somewhat hidden by modern astronomical instruments implying that current astronomers disregard his view. The next one was developed by the Dane ,Tycho Brahe ,where the Earth is in the center orbited by the Sun and the Moon with the other planets orbiting the sun. The last one is labeled "sic ratione" [according to reason] and is the Copernican system again. The "Atlas Novus Coelestis in quo Mundus Spectabilis " was published by Hom … [Click Below for Full Description]
