The birds are dealt with under their vernacular names. ''The collaborator for the first six volumes of the text was Ph. Guéneau de Montbeillard, who also wrote the section "Hirondelles" in vol. VII. The Abbé G.L.C.A. Bexon then assisted with the remainder of the bird section, so that Montbeillard could devote himself entirely to the insects'' (Anker).Georges Louis Leclerc (1707-1788) -- in 1717 his father became Comte de Buffon and Louis XV later made Georges Comte de Buffon -- was an inconspicuous student who only showed a special talent for mathematics. Initially he combined a career in finance with one in science, translating important works by Hales and Newton into French. In 1739 Buffon became director of the Jardin du Roi, later the Jardin des Plantes, and the Histoire naturelle may have originated as a description of the royal collection. It appeared from 1749 to 1804 and eventually comprised 44 volumes. Buffon was assist … [Click Below for Full Description]

Notably rare: one copy traced at auction, one in British institutions (SOAS), and six worldwide; bibliographers including Chauvin and Macdonald claimed never to have seen a copy. A second edition with an Amsterdam imprint appeared later the same year and is similarly rare. An English translation was published by Tonson the year after. The frame-narrative echoes the Biblical story of Potiphar's Wife, concerning a young prince who refuses the advances of his stepmother, who then denounces him to the sultan. Bella legatura coeva in tutta pergamena, titolo manoscritto al dorso. Ottimo esemplare fresco e genuino.
(D.B. It., vol. 52, pp. 362-4). Haym p. 494, n. 14..

LANCISI, Giovanni Maria.
Romae: Typis Jo: Francisci Buagni, 1707. FIRST EDITION. The foundation of cardiac pathology. Physician to Pope Clement XI, Lancisi undertook the study of sudden deaths under a papal directive after an unusual number of cases had occurred in Rome the previous year. This was a remarkable initiative by the Pope, and must be the first epidemiological study of a non-communicable condition. Autopsies of the deceased persons showed that the deaths were often due to hypertrophy and dilation of the heart, and to various kinds of valve defects. Lancisi was the first to describe valvular vegetations, and his book includes an historical survey of the literature and a classification of the cardiac diseases then recognised. G&M 2731. Lilly, Notable Medical Books, 103. Leibowitz, History of coronary heart disease, 74-5. Willius & Dry 76-77. Long, History of pathology, 109-110. This copy has the title page in the state with engraved papal arms, rather than woodcut arms or skull-and-crossbones device. No priority has been assigned. See Kligfield, "Survey of variant title-page vignettes in Lancisi's De Subitaneis Mortibus", in J. Hist. Med., 38, 336-39 (1983).4to, pp. (xxiv), 243, (1). Including the first leaf (blank) and the half-title, fine engraved arms of Pope Clement XI on title, errata on last page, woodcut initials. Contemporary vellum. Very light browning on 2 or 3 leaves, tear in fore-edge margin of Aa1, but a fine, crisp copy.

Montfaucon, Bernard de (ed.).
1707. 2 volumes. Folio. With 4 engraved plates, and 3 woodcut illustrations in the text. Each volume with an engraved headpiece, the first incorporating the coat of arms of Pope Clement XI, and the second that of Jean-Paul Bignon. Contemporary calf, richly gold-tooled spine and binding edges. First edition, second issue, of a monumental collection of Greek voyages, often overlooked in the literature, including the first complete edition of Cosmas of Alexandria's celebrated "Christiana Topographia". Cosmas, a merchant from Alexandria, sailed in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf and visited Ethiopia ca. 530. Though he was known as "Indicopleustes", or Indian Voyager, it is doubtful whether he actually visited India. In his "Christiana Topographia" Cosmas aimed to show that the earth was flat and the cosmos shaped like rectangular vaulted box. Several of the engravings in the present volume, reproduced from a manuscript, illustrates this view. In one of them the earth is shown as a rectangle with three notches, one of them representing the Arabian Gulf, and the whole surrounded by a an ocean, with in the east another rectangle representing Paradise, out of which four rivers flow into the inhabited world. Slightly browned, with some occasional minor foxing or thumbing, and some faint stains, otherwise in very good condition. Binding also very good, only slightly rubbed and the spine of the second volume slightly damaged at the top. Howgego, to 1800, C199. Cf. Dilke, "Cartography in the Byzantine Empire", in: Harley & Woodward (eds.), The history of cartography I, pp. 261-263.
