Al-Tugrai, Hassan ibn ´Ali.
1707. Small 4to. (20), 46 pp. With engr. title vignette. Contemp. vellum. "Édition estimée, et dont les exemplaires sont peu communs, parce que (selon Vogt) ils ont presque tous été perdus en mer" (Brunet). The accounts regarding the precise number of copies salvaged from the wreck vary: Schnurrer mentions 5 or 6, Ehrencron-Müller states 50. In any case, the number of copies extant is very small and thus the book is extremely rare. It contains the poem "Lamiyat al-Agam" by al-Hasan Ibn-Ali at-Tugrai (c. 1061-1121) in the Arabic original with a Latin translation and copious commentary by the Danish theologian Matthias Anchersen (1682-1741). "A complaint over the unfortunate circumstances of his times and over his own lot" (cf. GAL). - Some browning and foxing due to paper. The author's personal copy, inscribed to his brother Ansgar on the front flyleaf. Smitskamp 318. Schnurrer 199. Ehrencron-Müller I, 113. Brunet V, 875. Ebert 23020. Cf. GAL I, p. 247 (the 1717 ed.).

[Palau Islands; Philippines; Pelew] Serrano, Andres.
The first printed relation on the Palau Islands -and thus an important book relating to discoveries in the Pacific. Based on a narrative of a shipwreck of a group of natives from Palau (modern Pelew Islands) who arrived in the Philippines in 1697, it is an important work on the Philippines, illustrated with the first map of the islands which appeared here for the first time; "peregrina joya bibliográfica" (Retana). While on a journey of missionary inspection in the Samar Island of the Philippines, the Jesuit fathers Pablo Clain and Antonio Tuccio Siciliano encountered a group of natives of the Palau Islands (Palau was the name that their natives gave to their boats) who had been blown off course by the winds when trying to sail between two islands. After much hardship they had landed on the islands on 28 December 1696. From the information gathered from the natives by Czech missionary Paul Klein, the Jesuits drafted a map containing 87 of the islands. The Jesuits, as the appended documentation shows, secured Papal and Royal patronage, even from Louis XIV of France, to organize an expedition to evangelize the recently discovered islands. The Palau (Pelew) islands are a small group in Micronesia, apparently first seen by a European in 1543 by Ruy Lopez de Villalobos. They remained under Spanish administration until late in the 19th century. The Breve Relacion by Serrano led to three unsuccessful attempts to reach Palau from the Philippines (1700, 1708 and 1709). The first recorded visit was in 1710 by Francisco Padilla who led a Jesuit exploration. During the course … [Click Below for Full Description]

His book Projet d’une dixme royale is an outstanding work in the field of public finance. To get rid of the monstrous abuses of the existing system of taxation, he proposed that the taille and most other taxes should be suppressed, and that their place should be supplied by a royal tithe, consisting of one-twentieth part or 5 % of the produce of the land etc When brought forward its enemies contended that it was impracticable Vauban died in the same year that his tract appeared. Fritz, Samuel
Rare and highly influential map of the Amazon River basin, one of the foundational maps of South American cartography and perhaps the finest map made in South America of the colonial period, the first printed in Ecuador, and to our knowledge the first printed in South America. Fritz's map is the first printed map of the Amazon River made by someone who had explored it and served as the model for many other maps of the Amazon throughout the eighteenth century. Over the course of forty years as a Jesuit priest in the Amazon basin, Fritz used only basic instruments to laboriously survey and compile this extraordinary map of the area, which was printed for the first time in Quito in 1707. The map's rarity is due to the very limited run of the Quito printing. The map was intended solely for the officials in the Jesuit Province of Quito and the Real Audiencia of Quito, as well as state officials in Spain and religious officials in Rome, where the Jesuits were based. There is no record that it was ever offered for sale beyond this very limited circle. The map encompasses all the vast Amazon River, one of the first maps to do so. To the east is Para, under Portuguese control. As the Amazon is traced west to its origin, it splits into tributaries such as the Rio Napo. To the west are the great cities of western South America, under Spanish control, with Quito to the north and Cuzco and Lima to the south. Cities are labeled and marked with fort symbols of varying size. The equator neatly cuts the map in half vertically. There is more information to the west, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

CLARENDON, Edward Hyde, Earl of.
Oxford: printed at the Theater, 1707. Oxford: printed at the Theater,, 1707. Begun in the year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration, and Return, upon the 29th of May, in the Year 1660. 3 volumes bound in 6 parts as issued, octavo (220 x 141 mm). Surface and insect damage to calf in places, light wear at head of spine of parts III and VI, else in excellent condition, wide-margined, with joints and hinges intact. A highly appealing set of the second octavo edition of Clarendon's classic account of the English civil war. Originally written in the 1640s and revised in 1671, the history was first published in folio between 1702 and 1704, and in octavo from 1705 to 1706, thereafter being an essential component of a gentleman's library for the next two hundred years. Clarendon's great History has "remained in the mind because of his literary achievement — the fashioning of the most sophisticated and finely balanced history yet written in English (or written for a long time afterwards) — and for an unmistakable rhetorical voice. Clarendon's writings — and his own life — were steeped in the literary stoicism of the early seventeenth century; but in the History he created a distinctive work of art based on a highly wrought style, a forensic dissection of character and issue, and a sense of the de … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLOYER, John
London: Sam Smith and Benj. Walford, 1707. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary black morocco, a custom binding possibly executed by the "Geometrical Compartment Binder," covers with 2 large panels tooled in gilt, the inner panel decorated with ornamental scrolls and the outer panel with flower tools and corners and decorative flor designs at sides, spine elaborately gold-tooled in 6 compartments. A handsome copy. First edition of the first description of a pulse-watch, invented by the author before watches had hands to record the seconds. Floyer's watch, which ran 60 seconds, was used to count the pulse and to make regular observations on the pulse-rate. This invention was of major significance in the employment of instruments of precision for diagnosis, first mentioned by Galileo and Kepler. Floyer notes that Harvey designed a tract on the pulse and its use in diagnosis, but it was never completed. This volume also contains the appendix on the Chinese art of the pulse, which led Floyer to the examination of respiration and the lungs, which he discussed fully in his later volume of 1710, The Pulse Watch. Floyer (1649-1734), an eminent physician at Lichfield, is noted for his contributions to medicine. Albrecht von Haller, who introduced the timing of the pulse into Germany, stated that Floyer "was not known enough abroad and deserved to be more famous.".

Van der Aa's spectacular production gathers travel accounts of voyages from 1246- 1696 from reputable sources such as De Bry, Hakluyt, Herrera, de Barros, Thevenot, and includes all of the earliest voyages to the Americas such as Columbus, Vasco de Gama, Cortes, Drake, as well as all other major and minor European voyages. A folio edition was also planned and begun simultaneously, but then abandoned and eventually completed in 1727. Pieter Van der Aa was an accomplished Leiden publisher, who was eventually named chief printer for the city and for the university in 1715. His output consisted largely of repackaging known texts and maps into sets and atlases, as here. Though he lacked creativity, his work is nevertheless remarkable for the exactness and quality of its production in combination with the scope of the projects that he undertook. The texts compiled here are principally gathered from other published works and translated into Dutch, and many of the maps and engravings are taken from the work of Johann Lodewyk Gottfried, whom he credits on t … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLOYER, John
Sam Smith and Benj. Walford, 1707. FIRST EDITION Contemporary black morocco, a custom binding possibly executed by the "Geometrical Compartment Binder," covers with 2 large panels tooled in gilt, the inner panel decorated with ornamental scrolls and the outer panel with flower tools and corners and decorative flor designs at sides, spine elaborately gold-tooled in 6 compartments.

NEWTON, Isaac.
Typis Academicus / Benjamin Tooke, Cambridge / London. First edition of Newton’s treatise on algebra, or ‘universal arithmetic,’ his "most often read and republished mathematical work" (Whiteside). "Included are ‘Newton’s identities’ providing expressions for the sums of the ith powers of the roots of any polynomial equation, for any integer i [pp. 251-2], plus a rule providing an upper bound for the positive roots of a polynomial, and a generalization, to imaginary roots, of René Descartes’ Rule of Signs [pp. 242-5]" (Parkinson, p. 138). About this last rule for determining the number of imaginary roots of a polynomial (which Newton offered without proof), Gjertsen (p. 35) notes: "Some idea of its originality can be gathered from the fact that it was not until 1865 that the rule was derived in a rigorous manner by James Sylvester." The final chapter, on the extraction of roots, is by Edmund Halley."In fulfillment of his obligations as Lucasian Professor, Newton first lectured on algebra in 1672 and seems to have continued until 1683. Although the manuscript of the lectures in [Cambridge University Library] carries marginal dates from October 1673 to 1683, it should not be assumed that the lectures were ever delivered. There are no contemporary accounts of them and, apart from Cotes who made a transcript of them in 1702, they seem to have been totally ignored. Whiteside (Papers V, p. 5) believes that they were composed ‘over a period of but a few months’ during the winter of 1683-4" (Gjertsen, pp. 33-4). The course of lectures stemmed from a project on which Newton had emba … [Click Below for Full Description]
