Early 18th-century half calf, gilt spine with lettering-piece, panels covered with a nice colored paper, marbled edges (slightly worn and rubbed, corners and top of the spine damaged). At the last leaf verso is a long ownership's note by a certain Leonida Antonio Falgidi from S. Polo Sabino (Rieti), dated November 24, 1706. First title-page soiled, some staining especially at the beginning and at the end of the volume, all in all a good copy. FIRST EDITION, second issue (the first issue bears the date 1561), of the first Italian version of Barros' first and second "Decades', in the only separately published translation of the sixteenth century. The first book is dedicated by the translator Alfonso de Ulloa to Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (the dedication is dated Venice, August 18, 1561); the second book opens with a dedication, dated Venice, October 15, 1561, addressed by Ulloa to the Portuguese gentleman Duarte Gomez (cf. Joseph (Giuseppe) Wagner (1706-1780) was born In Switzerland and active as engraver in Venice. His prints were famous in their day. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'F.B.' after 'A. Zanetti and F. Zuccarelli'. Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815) was a famous Italian engraver known for his refined stipple engraving, whose most productive period was spent in London. Condition: Very good, given age. Two old folds. Two small closed tears in the margin (extending minimally into the image) backed with contemporary paper and acid free archival tape. In folio (358x228); pp. (12) 63 (1) con 75 tavole fuori testo incise in rame anche ripiegate suddivise in tre serie: i) XXIV. ii) XXXIV di XXXV assente la tav. XIX. iii) XVI ma XVII, vi è aggiunta 1 tavola, arma di papa Clemente XI incisa in legno al frontespizio, vari capilettera ornati. Legatura coeva in piena pelle dorso a 5 nervi con titolo e fregi oro. Alcuni restauro alla legatura, gorette marginali alle prime 3 carte, una carta preliminare rimontata e con impolveratura nei margini, lavoretto di tarlo nella costola interna di poche pagine peraltro buona copia con le incisioni fresche e ricche di tono. La I e la II edizione di questa opera furono impresse nel 1680 e 1702, entrambe con solo 35 tavv., questa è la I edizione curata dal figlio del Bartoli, Francesco e dal de la Chausse per la sopraggiunta morte di Sante Bartoli e del Bellori. "Il Bellori (Roma 1615-1696) frequentò l'Accademia di Francia di Roma, fu antiquario del papa e bibliotecario e antiquario di Cristina di Svezia. Nel 1670 Clemente X lo nominò "commissario" delle antichità di Roma, carica che mantenne fino al 1694, quando gli successe l'incisore Pietro Santi Bartoli (Perugia 1635-Pisa 1700) suo collaboratore e amico. Michel Ange de la Chausse nasce a Parigi ala fine del XVII sec. (1660) e muore intorno al 1738. Later replacement front endpaper, rather obvious paper repairs to inner joints. 19th century bookplate 'Johnston', and ownership name of Terence East, 1924 on inner board.ESTC T14242. FIRST EDITION. Little is known of Harvey's life and work although it is clear that he was a practising physician with great interest in symptomatology.

Buchblock vorgefallen. Fälze geöffnet. Unvollständig: Es fehlen die S. 173-256, 301-306 (zur Hälfte), 307-318,475-476 (zur Hälfte). Ab S. 496 mit stärker werdenden Eckverlust (außerhalb des Textes). Stich auf S. 96 fehlt teilweise und ist älter auf Trägerblatt aufmontiert. Durchgehend fleckig und mit Marginalien. Trotz der Beeinträchtigungen interessant. Auf Spiegel handschriftliche Notiz: "von den Wartenberger Verwandten zum Andenken an den unvergeßenen Onkel erhalten am 21. August 1884 Paul Wentz" Es findet sich ebenfalls im Spiegel eingeklebt ein wohl überklebter älterer Besitzervermerk: " J. Wentz Superintendent, Pastor zu Wartenberg i. Pommern". Set in roman, italic, Arabic and Greek type. Later paper wrapper. Catalogue of the collection of 126 Persian, Arabian, Turkish, Greek, Latin and other books and manuscripts donated to the Library of the University of Uppsala by the diplomat Johan Gabriel Sparwenfeld (1655-1727). It was compiled by the Swedish scholars Eric Benzelius the younger (1670-1756) and Olaus Celsius the elder (1675-1743). The main series of manuscripts, described in great detail, includes 41 in Arabic, Persian and Turkish, 8 in Greek (one dating back to the eighth century) and 12 in Latin and modern European languages. These are followed by 42 printed books including 2 in Chinese, several in Arabic, the 1581 Ostrog Bible and several other exotic languages, including Irish (set in Anglo-Saxon type). A few more manuscripts (mostly Arabic) are added at the end, plus an unnumbered geographic manuscript in Chinese (3 volumes). This is the earliest catalogue of the Uppsala University Library's collections. The Arabic, Persian and Turkish titles are set in a large Arabic type cut for the physician and orientalist Peter Kirsten by the Swedish punchcutter Peter von Selow (who served his apprenticeship under Tycho Brahe) and first used at Breslau in 1608. Very rare Portuguese psalm- and songbook printed in Tharangambadi (Tranquebar), India, by the Danish Missionpost of the Lutheran Church, the first settlement of Protestant missionaries in India, founded in 1706. Tharangambadi was acquired in 1620 by the Danish crown, and the first Lutheran missionaries arrived in 1706. It was a busy port where the international language was Portuguese. The town was taken by the British during the Napoleonic time, returned to Denmark in 1814, and was sold to Britain in 1845, together with other Danish settlements in India. According to the title-page this was the third edition, but we couldn't find any earlier ones.From the library of B.W. Luxdorph (1716-1788), the famous Danish bookcollector. Some notes in ink on paste-down. Binding rubbed along the extremities, lacking the front flyleaf. Text in very good condition.

[The three works following the prospect are described bellow in the comment].- // Robustly bound in contemporary full leather, with raised bands, spine labels and ornaments; upper corners, brushed. Missing front free endpaper; age-toned. Between 1706 and 1708, the printer and bookseller Pieter Vander Aa published accounts of 137 journeys that took place between 1246 and 1696 to the East and West Indies in Dutch. From 1707 he started to assemble a serial planned to have 28 volumes, 'Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen na Oost en West-Indiën', arranging each to have a common title-page for the collection, and specifics common title-page and preface for the set of journeys compiled in each volume. Moreover, each journey had its own title-page and specific preliminaries and illustrations. Laut Franckes Vorwort wurden die damals ebenfalls entstandenen, aber noch nicht überarbeiteten und zur Publikation freigegebenen weiteren Teile ohne seine Kenntnis und ohne Namensnennung jedoch ebenfalls publiziert (\"Die gottgefällige Einsamkeit /Oder schriftmaessige Regeln / wie man ausser der Gesellschaft ...\"), allerdings unter Auslassung einiger Passagen. Edition originale de ce "livre devenu rare, trop peu connu" (Encyclopédie Diderot, 1er édition, art. « Racine »,T.XIII, p. 747). "Par son excellence, peut aller de pair avec les Racines Grecques de Port-Royal". Prodigieusement doué pour les langues, Etienne de Fourmont est le premier sinologue français. Il devint également traducteur et professeur pour les langues arabe (au Collège Royal), tartare et indienne, membre de la Royal Society de Londres et de l'Académie de Berlin. Il a composé cet ouvrage, modèle du genre, à l'âge de 22 ans. (France littéraire, III, 181. A. Choppin, 'Les manuels scolaires en France de 1789 à nos jours', n°700). Provenance : Pierre-François de Lattre-Doby ou Lastre-Doby (1696-1729), né à Dinant en Belgique, procureur général du Grand Conseil de la province de Liège, avec ses armes dorées sur les plats (O.H.R., planche 1316-1). Le livre est déjà signalé comme rare au XVIIIe siècle. Bon exemplaire.

Venetiis, Apud Nicolaum Pezzana, 1706. 12mo, 153 x 82 mms., pp. [xxiv[, [1] - 1005 [1006 blank], including engraved title-page preceding printed title-page, contemporary red morocco fan binding, with central circular fan design in centre of each cover, with fan at upper and lower covers, and semi-circular gondola shapes on sides, spine blocked in blind; wear to end-papers, with worming to rear end-papers, occasional staining, binding very faded and slightly wormed, but still distinctive, a goodish copy with ownership/presentation inscription (which I can't quite decipher) on verso of rear free end-paper. The text includes Eptiome Flori in reliquos Titi Livii libros, qui desiderantur, pages 977 - 1005. This edition of Livy's history of rome was prepared by Carlo Signio (?1524 - 1584) and first appears in an Aldine press imprint of 1755.
