Benjamin Franklin
Among the most famous of all charitable bequests: Franklin did not believe that a public servant should be enriched and famously gave 1,000 pounds on his death to his two cities: Boston and Philadelphia; This is his Boston donation This was Franklin’s paycheck for serving as the President of Pennsylvania, signed by his executor and the state Treasurer, and distributed to his executors Benjamin Franklin was born on Milk Street, in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 17, 1706. He attended Boston Latin School but did not graduate; he continued his education through voracious reading. Although "his parents talked of the church as a career" for Franklin, his schooling ended when he was ten. He worked for his father for a time, and at 12 he became an apprentice to his brother James, a printer, who taught Ben the printing trade. When Ben was 15, James founded The New-England Courant, which was the first truly independent newspaper in the colonies. When denied the chance to write a letter to the paper for publication, Franklin adopted the pseudonym of "Silence Dogood", a middle-aged widow. Mrs. Dogood's letters were published, and became a subject of conversation around town. When his brother was jailed for three weeks in 1722 for publishing material unflattering to the governor, young Franklin took over the newspaper and had Mrs. Dogood (quoting Cato's Letters) proclaim: "Without freedom of thought there can be no such thing as wisdom and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech." WILLIAM PENN
1706. No binding. Fine. Autograph Letter Signed to James Logan. n.p. [London?], June 27, 1706. 1 p., 6 1/4 x 7 1/2 in. bifolium with integral address leaf with panel in Penn's hand. Penn, writing from England, asks his trusted secretary in Philadelphia to assist Thomas Haywood regarding his lands and debts. Penn was in the midst of his own ongoing dispute about ownership of all of Pennsylvania, which had originated with the crowning of William and Mary in 1688, and trumped-up charges of treason due to Penn's championing of religious freedom, which led to an opportunity for Penn's manager to, in effect, embezzle the entire colony from him. (See below for more details). A month after Penn wrote this letter, Logan advises Penn to avoid ruin by selling the government ""for a valuable consideration"" as the only ""probable method of clearing thy debts."" Penn did not heed Logan's advice, and the court placed Penn in debtor's prison from January 1707 to August 1708. Penn eventually settled the Ford claim with a payment of £7,600, and then began negotiations to sell the colony to the Crown. Unfortunately, a series of strokes from 1711 to 1713 interrupted his negotiations, and he died in poverty. His family (after its own dispute between step-sons) retained ownership of the colony of Pennsylvania until the American Revolution. Complete Transcript 27·4·1706.[1][James] Logan /with my love, desireing thy utmost care for my Concerns, & thy comfort into the bargain, shew the bearer Thomas Haywood, wt Just Kindness thou canst, be it abt Land, or debts due to him in y … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gaffarel, Jacques (Jacobi Gaffarelli) / Michel, Gregoire (Gregorii Michaelis)
1706-1676. Impreso por Benjamin Schiller/Godfried Schultz (apud Gothofredum Schultzen). Hamburgo, Alemania. . 1 Vol. . Frontispicio+portada+62 H.+290 pp.+9 H.+498 pp.+25 H. pp. Octavo. Pergamino de época. . Buen estado. .

[LUTE] HUNT, Arabella 1662-1705
London, 1706. Chaloner Smith: British Mezzotinto Portraits 137. Kinsky 231-3. "Hawkins mentions that 'she was unfortunate in her marriage: nevertheless she lived irreproachably, and maintained the character of a modest and virtuous woman'. In fact, her 'marriage' was to another woman (Amy Poulter, already legally married but disguised as a man under the name of James Howard)... She was a favourite of both Queen Mary and Queen Anne (to whom, as Princess, she had given singing lessons). Hawkins tells the well-known anecdote: The Queen [Mary] having a mind one afternoon to be entertained with music, sent to Mr. Gostling ? and Mrs. Arabella Hunt, who had a very fine voice, and an admirable hand on the lute, with the request to attend her; they obeyed her commands; Mr. Gostling and Mrs. Hunt sang several compositions of Purcell, who accompanied them on the harpsichord; at length the queen beginning to grow tired, asked Mrs. Hunt if she could not sing the old Scots ballad 'Cold and Raw', Mrs. Hunt answered yes, and sang it to her Lute... There is much contemporary evidence for the beauty of her voice, but she does not appear to have sung on the public stage." Ian Spink in Grove Music Online. Congreve (1670-1729) was a noted English playwright and poet of the Restoration period. The author greatly admired Hunt and wrote a lengthy ode to her, "On Mrs. Arabella Hunt Singing.". 347 x 254 mm. + narrow margins. Printed on laid paper.
