PATERSON, William]
London printed and sold by Ben. Bragg, 1706. 8vo, (16) + 156 + (4)pp, well bound in cloth, gilt lettered on upper cover. A good copy. First edition. 'This extended treatise on the union was written before the meeting of the commissioners to treat of a union, and it therefore took the form of a lengthy conversation, extending over many months, among several friends, on the union and its possible terms. The conversations rambled over almost every possible topic relative to the two countries - from the representation in the new Parliament to the tax on malt. The objective was to prepare the public in Scotland and in England for a union and to clarify points which already were causing confusion. It was a ponderous but at times perceptive work.' [W R & V G McLeod, Anglo-Scottish Tracts, 1701-1714, >1979, p.50]. [Click Below for Full Description]

Rebound in modern 3/4 red morocco with gilt-stamped ruling and motifs, over marbled paper boards. Spine with gilt lettering, ruling and raised bands. Edges of the book block in red. Full page copperplate-engraved frontispiece. This work an English dictionary originally published in 1658 and compiled by Edward Phillips, the nephew of acclaimed English poet John Milton. It was the first folio-sized English dictionary ever published. The work went through five editions during Phillips' lifetime, and by the time of his death, it had expanded from the original 11,000 entries to include about 17,000. In 1706, this sixth "revised corrected and improved" edition was compiled by John Kersey* and expanded even further to include about 38,000 entries. It is known that Phillips had plagiarized at least half of his entries in the original edition from Thomas Blount's "Glossographia" (1656). The frontispiece engraving contains images of Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and portraits of prominent English scholars and literary figures (including Chaucer, Spencer, Sidney and Bacon) surrounding the image of a globe, and is dated 1696; obviously taken from the previous edition of the book. The text of the dictionary is arranged in a two column format, with the first two letters of the words at the top of each column. The text of the final leaf is reproduced in the form of a manuscript. Gellius, Aulus.
Apud Cornelium Boutesteyn & Johannem du Vivié, 1706. Gellius's Attic Nights, supposed to have been written for the entertainment and education of his children, offers a rich tapestry of the life and times of the Roman Empire under the five good emperors. In an informal style Gellius ranges from law, grammar, history, and literary criticism to evening chats with fellow students and visits to the awe-inspiring villas of Herodes Atticus, the most famous philanthropist of Athens. Brunet calls the present example the "Édition la meilleure qui ait paru jusqu'ici" of the Attic Nights. Originally edited by Joannes Fredericus Gronovius and then polished by his son Jacobus Gronovius, this version also includes notes and commentary by Kaspar Schoppe, Peter Lambeck, Louis Carrion, Antoine Thysius, and Jacobus Oiselius. The additional engraved title-page, done by P. Sluyter after a design by J. Groere, depicts the author at work on a moonlit night, and is decorated with medallions of Athena and her owl; the title-page is printed in red and black, with an engraved vignette of an Attic city. Binding: Prize binding (without certificate) of contemporary vellum, covers framed and panelled in double blind fillets with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, gilt-stamped medallion on each cover showing a scimitar-wielding knight bearing two crossed keys on his shield, supported by monkeys and surmounted by lounging figures grasping snakes. Spine with gilt-ruled raised bands, gilt-stamped compartment decorations, and early inked title.

BOURSAULT, Edme.
— Paris : François le Breton, 1706 [Paris : veuve de Clément Gasse, 1702]. [Suivi de] :Les Fables d’Ésope, comédie. Troisième édition. — Paris : Nicolas Gosselin, 1700. [Click Below for Full Description]

COVERTE, Robert.
Leiden Pieter Vander Aa. omswervingen. Van Anno 1607, tot in 't Jaar 1611. Nu aldereerst uyt 't Engelsch vertaald. Text in Dutch or Flemish, translated from the English, 1706, 8vo, approximately 180 x 115 mm, 7 x 4½ inches, vignette on title page, folding map of middle east and India, 2 folding engraved plates, printed in black letter, pages: (4), 61, (5), bound in modern half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt lettered morocco label to spine, new endpapers. Occasional light browning to pages, otherwise a very good clean tight copy of a rare travel book. There is very little information about Robert Coverte. Although styled on the title page as Captain Robert Covert, it seems he was steward on the 'Ascension' which sailed from Plymouth in 1607. The vessel ran aground going into Surat, the primary port of the Moghul Empire, but the crew escaped ashore in boats. An English merchant introduced them to the court of the Great Mogul at Agra arriving in December 1609. Coverte with his companions started out for home from Agra at the beginning of 1610 choosing to travel overland through Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad. They reached Aleppo in December 1610 and then took a ship back to England arriving in April 1611. Coverte's account of his travels was first published in London in 1612 and again in 1614. SUBTITLE continued: "... and the Customs of the Barbarous Inhabitants; with Reference to their Religion, Government, Marriages, daily Employments [sic], Habits, Habitations, Diet, Death, Funerals &c. Written by his Excellency E. Sprints Ides, Ambassador from the Czar of Muscovy [Moscow] to the Emperor of China. Illustrated with a large map of the countries, drawn by the Ambassador upon his journey, and many curious cuts ["cuts" means copper engravings]."
