COVERTE, Robert.
Leiden Pieter Vander Aa, 1706. omswervingen. Van Anno 1607, tot in 't Jaar 1611. Nu aldereerst uyt 't Engelsch vertaald. Text in Dutch or Flemish, translated from the English, 1706, 8vo, approximately 180 x 115 mm, 7 x 4½ inches, vignette on title page, folding map of middle east and India, 2 folding engraved plates, printed in black letter, pages: (4), 61, (5), bound in modern half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt lettered morocco label to spine, new endpapers. Occasional light browning to pages, otherwise a very good clean tight copy of a rare travel book. There is very little information about Robert Coverte. Although styled on the title page as Captain Robert Covert, it seems he was steward on the 'Ascension' which sailed from Plymouth in 1607. The vessel ran aground going into Surat, the primary port of the Moghul Empire, but the crew escaped ashore in boats. An English merchant introduced them to the court of the Great Mogul at Agra arriving in December 1609. Coverte with his companions started out for home from Agra at the beginning of 1610 choosing to travel overland through Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad. They reached Aleppo in December 1610 and then took a ship back to England arriving in April 1611. Coverte's account of his travels was first published in London in 1612 and again in 1614. MEDICINE - "SPANISH FLY"). "GREENFIELD, JOHN" [GROENEVELT, JOANNES]
Jeffrey Wale and John Isted, London, 1706. 188 x 115 mm. (7 3/8 x 4 1/2"). 20 p.l., 363, [3] pp.Translated from the Latin, with the author's approbation, by John Martin. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Pleasing contemporary panelled calf, covers gilt roll border, sprinkled leather frame and central panel, the latter with stencilled frame, blind-tooled tulip cornerpieces, rebacked to style with sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine panels with gilt fleuron centerpiece, brown morocco label. Blake (NLM), p. 187; Wellcome III, 168; ESTC T64914. Half a dozen small stains or abrasions to boards, corners somewhat rubbed, minor foxing throughout, a couple of small stains or rust spots, other trivial imperfections, but an excellent copy, generally clean and crisp internally, the restored binding sturdy. Written in response to being jailed for malpractice, this is a defense by a Dutch-born London physician of his use of cantharides, or Spanish fly, to treat bladder and kidney disorders. Groenevelt (1648-1615/16) received his medical degree at Utrecht in 1670 and moved to England in 1676, where he became John Greenfield. As a successful practicing physician, Greenfield promoted the use of Spanish fly, commonly known as an aphrodisiac, to treat a variety of ailments by purportedly modifying its toxicity with camphor oil. Greenfield's problems began when a woman he treated complained that the ingested cantharides had made her ill, sparking a fierce backlash by the College of Physicians that ended with Greenfield in Newgate Prison. Although Greenfield was eventually released, he never quite reco … [Click Below for Full Description]

NEWTON, Isaac.
Sam. Smith & Benj. Walford,, London, 1706. First Latin edition of Newton's Opticks. Unlike Principia mathematica, Newton published this work first in English (1704), with the scholarly Latin translation by his assistant Samuel Clarke appearing in 1706 - the version in which Newton's theories of light and colour were disseminated on the European Continent. This copy belonged to the French collector Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (1702-44) and bears his gilt arms and name scroll on upper and lower covers.Bonnier de la Mosson amassed one of the great cabinets of curiosities of the eighteenth century, installing it with at his hôtel particulier, the hôtel de Lude, at 58 rue Saint-Dominique. The collection comprised chemistry, physics and natural history as well as medals, pictures and books. The richly appointed display cabinets were celebrated in their day and the collection was immortalised in several detailed engravings and in paintings by Jacques de Lajoüe. At the collector's untimely death at the age of 42 he was deeply in debt and the collection, including the library, was dispersed at auction in 1745. Parts of the collection were acquired by Buffon, who installed several of the original cabinets at the Jardin du roi (which later became Musée national d'histoire naturelle). This book was lot 702 in De la Mosson's sale (Catalogue des livres de M. Bonnier de La Mosson. dont la vente commencera lundi 26 avril 1745, Paris, Jacques Barrois, 1745). The catalogue listed two other Newtons: a French Opticks (Amsterdam, 1720, lot 703) and a Principia (lot 659). 4to (242 × 180 mm), pp. … [Click Below for Full Description]

LE PELLETIER, Jean
Guillaume Behourt, Rouen, 1706. RIDLEY, Humphrey.
FIRST EDITION IN LATIN of Ridley's The Anatomy of the Brain (1695), the first book in English on neuroanatomy. "Ridley gave one of the first descriptions of the restiform body, the intracavernous venous sinuses, which he injected, and the venous drainage of the corpus striatum" (McHenry pp. 64-67). He also gave the first account of the circular venous sinus, the first English account of a pineal tumour, excellent descriptions of the dura mater and the deep cerebral nuclei, and the first detailed description of the arachnoid membrane. The first plate is a superb depiction of the anastomotic channels of vessels at the base of the brain (the "circle of Willis"), better than Willis's own. This Latin translation of Ridley's work, which appears to have been overlooked by the standard sources on neurology and by K.F. Russell in his British Anatomy, was prepared by Michael Ernst Ettmüller (1673-1732), professor of medicine at Leipzig University. It is preceded here by Ridley's memoir on the motion of the dura mater, "Experimentum anatomicum ad veram durae matris motus causam detegendam institutum," originally published in the Philosophical Transactions, vol. 23 (1702-3).

London: Printed by W. Pearson, for John Cullen at the Buck between the two Temple-Gates, Fleet-Street, 1706. London: Printed by W.
