PUFENDORF, Samuel,
Frankfurt am Main, Sumptibus Friderici Knochii & Filii, typis Dieterici Caesaris Mulleri, 1706. Gr.-8vo. Kupferportrait von Pufendorf, Titelblatt mit Vignette in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, 10 Bll., 1 gefaltetes Bl., 1296 S., 6 Bll. (Index Rerum). Oktober 1694. Keith, George
London: Printed by Joseph Downing..., 1706. Title-leaf, dedication leaf, 92pp. Small quarto. Mid-20th-century crushed morocco, spine and panels ruled in gilt, raised bands, elaborately gilt inner dentelles, by Zaehnsdorf. Very faint contemporary ownership signature at head of titlepage. A very nice copy, from the library of Jay Snider, with his bookplate. Keith arrived in Boston in 1702 as a representative of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, having renounced his previous fanatical attachment to Quakerism. His travels from New England to Carolina during the two subsequent years had him sermonizing before a good number of congregations, as well as taking part in several pamphlet controversies (Sabin attributes some fifty-two titles to him; see "Works of George Keith Printed in America" cited below). He preached in Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jamestown, and other locations along the coast, and made a name for himself by taking on the "stubborn and irascible inhabitants" of the colonies. An important narrative by a major figure of the period. CHURCH 827. STREETER SALE 817. CLARK I:108. SABIN 37199. Gellius, Aulus
Lugduni Batavorum: Apud Cornelium Boutesteyn & Johannem du Vivié 4to (26, 10.25" cm). Add. engr. t.-p., [34], 903, [65 (index; 1 final f. blank)] pp.. 1706 Gellius's Attic Nights, supposed to have been written for the entertainment and education of his children, offers a rich tapestry of the life and times of the Roman Empire under the five good emperors. In an informal style Gellius ranges from law, grammar, history, and literary criticism to evening chats with fellow students and visits to the awe-inspiring villas of Herodes Atticus, the most famous philanthropist of Athens. Brunet calls the present example the "Édition la meilleure qui ait paru jusqu'ici" of the Attic Nights. Originally edited by Joannes Fredericus Gronovius and then polished by his son Jacobus Gronovius, this version also includes notes and commentary by Kaspar Schoppe, Peter Lambeck, Louis Carrion, Antoine Thysius, and Jacobus Oiselius. The additional engraved title-page, done by P. Sluyter after a design by J. Groere, depicts the author at work on a moonlit night, and is decorated with medallions of Athena and her owl; the title-page is printed in red and black, with an engraved vignette of an Attic city. Binding: Prize binding (without certificate) of contemporary vellum, covers framed and panelled in double blind fillets with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, gilt-stamped medallion on each cover showing a scimitar-wielding knight bearing two crossed keys on his shield, supported by monkeys and surmounted by lounging figures grasping snakes. Lahontan, Louis Armand, Baron de:
The Hague: Charles Delo, 1706.. Two volumes. [18],376; [2],5-336,[2]pp. plus twenty-seven plates (most folding, and including one large folding map, "Carte Que Les Gnacsitares...Carte de la Riviere Longue..."). 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked, spine gilt, leather labels. Minor edge wear. Bookplate on each pastedown, light occasional foxing, large folding map bound upside down. Very good. Second edition of Lahontan's narrative, a curious blending of fact and fantasy. His account of his travels in the Great Lakes region is one of the most important travel narratives of the day, but his claims to have journeyed west of the Mississippi are highly doubtful. However, his assertions had great impact on geographers of the time, who adopted much of his imaginary geography. The most notable map is the "Carte Que Les Gnacsitares...Carte de la Riviere Longue..." depicting an imaginary river extending westward from Lake Superior. The "Carte Generale de Canada," the frontispiece in volume two, is also considerably confused geographically. Volume two also contains the "Dictionaire de la Langue des Sauvages." The work remains a classic voyage, even if partially imaginary, written by a man "of more than ordinary learning and intelligence" - Sabin. Regarding this edition, Sabin writes "[t]he alteration is mainly in the 'Dialogues' which are rewritten; the voyages to Portugal and Denmark are omitted, and the whole work is thus brought into two volumes." "Although much of the work has been condemned as over- imaginative, it did influence the subsequent growth of primitivism i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oktober 1694.

Gaffarel, Jacques (Jacobi Gaffarelli) / Michel, Gregoire (Gregorii Michaelis)
1706-1676. . 1706 - Impreso por Benjamin Schiller/Godfried Schultz (apud Gothofredum Schultzen). Hamburgo, Alemania. . 1 Vol. . Frontispicio+portada+62 H.+290 pp.+9 H.+498 pp.+25 H. Octavo. Pergamino de época. . Buen estado. .

Louvain [Amsterdam?]: Groote Compagnie [Carel Allard?], 1706. |~||~||~||~||~| First issue of these richly allegorical emblem engravings criticizing the Catholic Church. Published during a crisis of succession in the Holland Mission, "Rome Perturbed, or the Catholic Church in uproar, presented in ten emblems showing how the papacy, but especially the monks, trespass against the Ten Commandments" follows a long tradition of anti-clerical satire used by Romeyn de Hooghe and others in a debate culminating in the schism between the Curia and the Dutch diocese in 1723 to form the Old Catholic Church. Petrus Codde (1648-1710) was Archbishop of Utrecht from 1695 until 1704, when he was permanently discharged from his post by Pope Clement XI following repeated accusations of Jansenism. He had been replaced in 1702 by Theodore de Cock, a former friend, after failing to defend his orthodoxy at court in Rome. Their longstanding personal rivalry inspired this series of satirical engravings, set in the context of the pervasive religious controversy. Muller identifies the anonymous artists as the … [Click Below for Full Description]

The aim of the expedition which took place from 1692 to 1695 was to conclude further commercial agreements with the Chinese. Before the Tartars became masters of China, it was almost impossible for foreigners to find admittance to the Imperial Court. Bonucci, Anton Maria (1651-1728)
Na Officina de Antonio Pedrozo Galram, Cambridge 1706 - 16]+555 pages. Octavo (8" x 6") bound in full leather with raised bands with red labels and gilt lettering to spine. (Palau 32887) First edition. Antonio Maria Bonucci was a Jusuit priest and Antonio Vieira's secretary for the last ten years of his life. Since Bonucci was Vieira's secretary until his, Vieira's, death in 1697 and was well aware of the content of Vieira's work, it is surprising that he wrote and managed to get a book published in 1706 in which eh seemingly follows some of Vieira's ideas regarding the succession of time. When one reads the first "book" of this work, they have the impression that the content and structure are very much similar to some passages of Vieira's Clavis Prophetarum. A study of this book will provide further light on Vieira's interpretation of the succession of empires, particularly when analyzing his chapter on "how the time of the Antichrist should be understood in the Fifth empire, while Christ's empire would thus be counted as the sixth. Antonio Vieira was a Portuguese Jesuit philosopher and writer, the "prince" of Catholic pulpit-orators of his time. He accompanied his parents to the colony of Brazil, where his father had been posted as a registrar. He received his education at the Jesuit college at Bahia. In 1635 he entered the priesthood. He distinguished himself as an orator. He was one of the reformers during the inquisition and his enemies had him exiled to Coimbra. this work is a kind of universal history, one of its interest is that the dedication was written in Bahia. … [Click Below for Full Description]
