LE PELLETIER, Jean
Guillaume Behourt, Rouen, 1706. [Click Below for Full Description]

Following a published criticism of Catholic doctrine, he was incorporated at Cambridge 1687, and took a living in Peterborough a year later. The Reflections are generally attributed to Gilbert; and comprise a critical response to William Fleetwood's works on Miracles. In the Reflections, Gilbert asserts that Fleetwood's thinking is dangerously undermining to Christianity in that they compromise the 'certainty of proof' which miracles give to 'revealed religion;' and that it in any event it is not man's place to set a definitive standard for what is or is not a miracle of God. c. 1706. This charming small map features a huge island of California with an indented coastline and the place names R. d' Estate, C. Blanco, P. de Carinde, Canal de S. Barbee, I. de S. Martin, I. de S. Mare, B. de S. Francisco, B. de Simon, B.S. Christoue and Piemabe. The British Colonies extend along the coast from New England west past the Mississippi River, oddly encompassing the Spanish colony of La Floride. The Mississippi River is depicted far too west with its headwaters located by the Rio Grande. The European route to and from the West Indies is also depicted. A quaint title cartouche features a crocodile, serpent and natives tending a fire. A nice impression with original color and minor soiling in the wide margins. 10.75 x 7.4 in.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Translated from the Original by several Hands
ont> Sam Buckley : London, 1706 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A mixed, early edition set of Peter Motteux's translation of the famed picaresque novel Miguel de Cervantes; Don Quixote. Adorned with illustrations. Volume I is the second edition of 1706 Volume II is the 1705 edition Volume III is the 1706 edition Volume IV is the 1731 edition Uniformly bound. Scarce in any edition. ESTC T125276. Illustrated, with twelve plates across all volumes. To the binder's instructions it states that there should be sixteen plates. There are four plates lacking to volume IV according to the list, 'The Duke, Dutchess and Don Quixote Hunting', 'Don Quixote and Sancho Pancha Ride Blindfold', 'The Adventure of the Enchanted Head', 'Don Quixote Coquer'd'. Motteaux' translation is an important work, the four volumes were initially published in 1700-03 and is extremely scarce in any condition. Motteaux' translation has been noted for adopting a more frivolous style compared to the ironic tone of Cervantes' original dialogue. Motteaux has also set this work in more of a French setting, thus losing some of the Spanish ambiance of the original. Miguel de Cervantes is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and the wrold's pre-eminent novelist. His most famous work, Don Quixote is considered to be the first modern European novel. The story of Don Quixote was originally published in two volumes, 1605 and 1615. It is classed as the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden age as well as the entire Spanish canon. The novel is episodic in form and is written in t … [Click Below for Full Description]
