JOSEPH, DEN GEBOORNEN INDIAAN.
Leyden, Pieter van der Aa, 1706.Sm.8vo. Old marbled wrappers. With engraved title-vignette and double-page engraving. 23, (4) pp.Issued in Pieter van der Aa's collection of voyages. - When Pedro Alvares Cabral called at Cochin in the winter of 1500 to 1501, he was approached by two Syro-Malabar priests, Joseph and Mathias, who requested to be taken on board for the voyage to Europe so that they could visit Rome and Jerusalem. Mathias, however, died en route. In the cities of Europe, Joseph was apparently interrogated at great length about his homeland, and was regarded as a man of the highest integrity. His description of Cranganore, although bigoted and biased in favour of the Christian community, was widely accepted at face value. In Rome he presented a report on the Malabar Christians and answered numerous questions, some of them directed from the pope himself (Howgego J29). An early account of a visitor from India to Europe. - Fine.Tiele 5; Cat. NHSM I, p.107.

Theognis
London: typis J. Heptinstall, impensis autem H. Nisbett (Derby); apud H. Mortlock, 1706 First edition, as edited by Anthony Blackwall; the elegiac poems of Theognis of Megara, from the 6th century B.C., had been printed in England only once before, in 1639 (STC 23944). This is Blackwall's first book, written while he was headmaster at the Derby School (whence Nisbett's name in the imprint); the Greek text is followed by a Latin translation, and extensive notes and indices; at the beginning is a poetical address from Blackwall to Joshua Barnes, the well-known professor of Greek. More than twenty years later Blackwall became headmaster at the Market Bosworth Grammar School in Leicestershire, just as Samuel Johnson arrived there to take up his first adult employment as usher (a distressing experience described at length by Boswell); Johnson's direct association with Blackwall, however, which must have lasted a few months until Blackwall's death in April, 1730, is undocumented.. Contemporary sheep, a bit worn. . Octavo. Text in Greek and Latin. Joints cracking but sound, some pencil markings on terminal blanks. Signatures of Edward Tennant dated 1742; later armorial bookplate of Henry Hobhouse (1776-1854) and a note of acquisition for one shilling at "Orme's sale," probably the sale at Sotheby's of the library of Robert Orme, the historian of India, in April, 1796. A good and interesting copy. The 1400 lines ascribed to Theognis form more than half the surviving elegiac poetry of the pre-Alexandrian period; there are important references to Theognis in both Plato and Aristotl … [Click Below for Full Description]

FONTANA, Fulvio (or Aldigherio), conte.
In Milano per li fratelli Sirtori stampatori Arcivescovali 1706 - Small 4to, pp. [xii], 126, xix; plus an engraved frontispiece, portrait of the dedicatee and six portrait plates; small library stamps on title page and last leaf, else a very good copy in contemporary vellum, gilt panelled with floral sprays at corners (no upper free endpaper). First edition thus: first published in Florence in 1701 under the title I pregi della Toscana nell'imprese piu segnalate de' cavalieri di Santo Stefano, but here with different plates. This is an account of the Order of S. Stefano of Tuscany, giving an account of its foundation and history, followed by biographies of its most illustrious officers. The portraits, engraved by Hubert Vincent, show six Grand Dukes of Tuscany, all Grand-Masters of the order; the lists at the end of the volume catalogue many of the achievements, officials and lower members of the order throughout its history. The author appears to have been known both as Fulvio and as Aldigherio Fontana and lived 1649-1723. The order of S. Stefano was founded in 1561 by Cosimo I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and was dedicated to fighting the Ottoman Turks and the mediterranean pirates, especially those preying on shipping from the new port of Livorno: in the early years, its members fought with distinction at the siege of Malta (1565) and the battle of Lepanto (1571). The present work dates from the very end of its existence as a military order: in the later 18th century it became an educational organisation, and although officially dissolved in the 19th century it still exists a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gellius, Aulus.
Apud Cornelium Boutesteyn & Johannem du Vivié, 1706. Gellius's Attic Nights, supposed to have been written for the entertainment and education of his children, offers a rich tapestry of the life and times of the Roman Empire under the five good emperors. In an informal style Gellius ranges from law, grammar, history, and literary criticism to evening chats with fellow students and visits to the awe-inspiring villas of Herodes Atticus, the most famous philanthropist of Athens. Brunet calls the present example the "Édition la meilleure qui ait paru jusqu'ici" of the Attic Nights. Originally edited by Joannes Fredericus Gronovius and then polished by his son Jacobus Gronovius, this version also includes notes and commentary by Kaspar Schoppe, Peter Lambeck, Louis Carrion, Antoine Thysius, and Jacobus Oiselius. The additional engraved title-page, done by P. Sluyter after a design by J. Groere, depicts the author at work on a moonlit night, and is decorated with medallions of Athena and her owl; the title-page is printed in red and black, with an engraved vignette of an Attic city. Binding: Prize binding (without certificate) of contemporary vellum, covers framed and panelled in double blind fillets with gilt-stamped corner fleurons, gilt-stamped medallion on each cover showing a scimitar-wielding knight bearing two crossed keys on his shield, supported by monkeys and surmounted by lounging figures grasping snakes. Spine with gilt-ruled raised bands, gilt-stamped compartment decorations, and early inked title.
