Dionysio Gothofredo
Leipzig: Gleditchii & Knochii, 1705. Very good for age and use: has marginalia (in Latin: from an early owner!) and Latin essay in back on spare page. "The Body of Roman Civil Law/in Four Distinct Parts" by Dionysio Gothofredo (Denis Godefroy). The basis for English civil law, this is comprised of four parts covering jurisprudence practices. The original was ordered by Justinian I. Originally it had three parts, but when certain areas were noticed as missing or lacking in authority, Justinian ordered a fourth part. This particular edition is intriguing due to its many original aspects including the heavily embossed boards: the front has a center motif of a person with a sword, who appears male?, with a motto surrounding. Looks like the figure is sitting inside shutters with a square around, increasing in size with the outer looking like a row of chains. The back has a coat of arms motif as central with a shield at bottom with some kind of a bird to the right and maybe vases of flowers or grasses to the left. The design repeats like the front ending in a row of chains in final box before the edge. The spine is banded with an inset leather band "Corpus Juris Civilis" in what was once gilt or gold lettering. The volume itself is huge: approximately 4" high, 10" long and 8" wide. The vellum at back outside edge is missing and some sort of soft padding showing through. At the front, there are two sheets of paper that looked to have been glued down and have lifted. Opposite this, is a signature dated 1741 while on the top of the next page is a signature dated 1748. Most intriguin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guillaume Bosman
Autrecht: Ches Antoine Schouten, Marchand Libraire, 1705 A fair copy of the 1st edition of the French translation of this work by Willem Bosman. Classed as 'fair' because it contains 19 of the 27 plates issued. Bosman lived in Dutch West Africa from 1688 to 1701 and worked for the Dutch West India Company, becoming Chief Merchant, until his forced retirement at the age of 29. He returned to Europe and wrote up his experience of West Africa using a letter format. It was extremely popular, particularly because his was the first full and accessible account of the area. It has been used as a major source of information on the Dutch Slave Trade. This copy has been fairly recently rebound in a full leather binding with gilt compartments and titles to spine and gilt decoration to board corners. The binding is in very good clean condition with light corner wear. There is the bookplate of O and H Brunner to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents: frontispiece; decorative title with signature of Edwd Olive to the top; letterpress title; letter from Bosman 5pp; preface 11pp; text in letter format pp 1-520 with 19 fold out plates (1-11 of castles, 12-17 of natural history, and 18-19 of scenes); finis. The contents are very clean. There are some small edge tears and a paper flaw to the letterpress title; and some small repaired tears to a few plates. Plate 11 has some browning. P 83 has an old repaired tear to the bottom margin.

Alleine, Joseph.
London: Printed for Thomas Parkhurst, 1705. 12mo (15 cm, 6"). [6] ff., 180 pp. Ejected minister and devotional writer Joseph Alleine (1634–68) was brought into Puritanism by George Newton, the Puritan vicar of St. Mary Magdalene Church, Taunton, Somerset. Alleine's Sure Guide was originally published in 1671 as the first part of An Alarme to Unconverted Sinners and is a major work on conversion and salvation. The online DNB labels it "an evangelical classic" and the fact that it went through approximately 75 editions before 1801 and is still in print attests to the accuracy of that assessment.    It is additionally noteworthy that Alleine's "writing on covenanting, together with that of his father-in-law, later inspired John Wesley to institute the Methodist covenant service" (ODNB).    Provenance: Contemporary signature of Abraham Goodhead in lower margin of p. 60.    Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and ESTC locate => no U.S. libraries reporting ownership of this edition and only two worldwide (Bodleian, University of Witwatersrand Library).         ESTC T212853. VERRUA. MANUSCRIT.

Spottiswoode (John, of that ilk, recipient)
1705. both letters 2 pp., small 4to, with an integral leaf with the address panel on the verso, folded in from the corners and then at the middle to form petite missives (page size 200 x 60 mm, folded approx. 55 x 115 mm) . The address panels read: 'Mr John Spotswood avocat to be left at John Valongs a Bookseller near the Cros at Edinburgh Schotlandt.' Spottiwood (1667–1728) 'played by his example a major part in the successful re-establishment of legal education in the Scottish universities' (ODNB). He had prosecuted part of his legal studies in Leiden, which is presumably where he met Johan vander Burk. As well as friendship, the two seem to have had some mutual commercial interests, as well as dealings with the 'Laird de Wariston.' War overshadows both letters. The first letter has a page and a half on the current politico-economic circumstances, before turning to news from the Republic of Letters - pretty sparse, given the war. 'John Valongs' is presumably John Vallance (or Vallens: see SBTI). The variations of the spellings of Spotiswoode and Vallance illustrate the fluidity of spelling at the time. (plus VAT in the EU)

No place. Single sheet, large folio, overall 13" x 17" (34 x 43 cm), written in a neat, small contemporary hand, four columns, tabled, some early waterstains, written one side, has been folded, and Docketed in French. This manuscript table lists the names of all the 279 ships in the Royal Navy in 1705, listed under the rating,(one to six) and with the weight of each ship ,how many crew and number of guns A table in the corner gives the totals of each class along with all the other types of ships, ie. Fire Ships, Hulks, Hospital Ships &c. The only reference we have been able to find of this text is a single location of a printed version at the National Library of Scotland. This manuscript would appear to be something special because it has been Docketed in French. 1705 was two years before the Act of Union and Scotland was still a hotbed of support for the Jacobite cause and with very close links with France who were at war with England with the Marlborough campaign still in full force. The docketing which commences "A Leste des fregattes d'Angletterre et des. pour l'anne 1705" gives a strong clue that this item was copied on behalf of a spy for information which would be useful for the French. It is particularly interesting to note that the only copy of the printed version, which was printed in London, should be located in Scotland.

Londini [i.e. London]: Typis Samuelis Roycroft, & prostant apud Gualterum Kettilby, 1705. [8], 259pp, [5]. A handsome copy in contemporary panelled calf, with slight rubbing, crack to upper joint, and a little marking. Tear without loss to C4, else a crisp copy, with a manuscript inscription to recto of FFEP indicating that this was 'Bought at Dick's coffee house at the / auction of Dr. Elwood's Books. Novbr. 25. 1740 / Price - 0:2:8d'. This well-preserved copy of the second edition of Bishop of St. Asaph William Beveridge's (bap 1637, d.1708) methodical and arithmetically accurate introduction to biblical chronology, first published in 1669, was, according to the inscription purchased from one of the many book auctions held at Dick's Coffee House, Dublin. A significant Irish institution, founded by bookseller and newspaperman Richard Pue, it hosted many sales between the 1690s and the 1760s. We can find no record of any printed catalogue for this sale, but given that the Vice- Provost of Trinity College, Dr. John Elwood, left his alma mater a £1000 bequest in the same year, it is likely safe to assume that it was his library which came under the hammer. A near-identical inscription (recording the sale price at a mere 1s 2d), almost certainly made by the same (unidentified) purchaser, features on a volume of Descartes De homine figuris (Leiden, 1662) sold at Christie's as lot 41 in the Courtiss Sale (9 February 2000). Clarendon, Edward Hyde
Oxford (Printed at the Theater). In good condition for the age. Clarendon, (Edward Hyde) three volumes of the History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (Begun in the Year 1641) in 6 books / parts. Volume I (Parts 1 & 2) were printed in 1705 Volume II (Parts 1 & 2) were printed in 1706 Volume III (Parts 1 & 2) were printed in 1706 The first thing to note is that at some point someone has taken a small square of binding from a younger series (reprints) of these books (showing the volume numbers) and stuck them over the original binding (see photos) these can easily be removed and in fact one has fallen off and another is almost come away. On the title page of Volume II part 1, someone has drawn an additional figure "I" next to the Volume "II" reference because the binding has the wrong series reference number stuck on (as stated above). All but one book have loose front covers / boards. On Volume I part 1 there are two pieces of tape holding the outer board and the 1st page in place. One of the blank inner pages (front) has been cut out / removed). On Volume I part 2 there is a single "book worm" hole that runs through the whole book (near the bottom) The pages are generally in good clean condition considering the age. The inner couple of pages on all books are stained, folded and slightly torn in places.

He is best known for this work, his 'History of the Rebellion' first published between the years 1702-1704, but written between the years 1646 and 1648 (recording events up until March 1644). This text is often considered as being the first full-scale, detailed history of the Civil War, and is also important due to the role Clarendon himself played in the events detailed in the work. Moreover, Clarendon's involvement in the action invariably influenced his account, with the work being written from a royalist perspective, hence advancing Clarendon's own viewpoint and politics. MORTIER, Pieter.
Amsterdam, c.1705. Original colour. Two sheets conjoined, total 590 x 830mm. Very fine condition. A large chart showing from the west coast of Ireland, Iceland, Greenland and the bays of Arctic America. The abundance of English placenames is a testament to their efforts to find the North West Passage, hoping to reach the East Indies without having to pass the French and Spaniards! Of interest are the pair of channels traversing the tip of Greenland, the upper one called 'Destroit de M. Vorbischer' (Strait of Martin Frosbisher). These appear as a consequence of the Zeno hoax of 1558, which put the mythical island of Frisland on most maps of the period. Martin Frobisher (1535-94) sailed across the Atlantic in 1576 to look for the North West Passage: he landed on Greenland but thought it to be the non-existent Frisland shown on his charts. When he sailed on and touched land he thought he had arrived in Greenland when in fact he was at what is now Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Entering the bay he believed he had discovered a strait on Greenland, and even two more voyages (1577 & 1578) did nothing to make him doubt himself. Over a century later this chart was published with his mistake still included. Frobisher did not have much luck: he also mistook iron pyrite for gold-bearing ore and a narwhal corpse for a unicorn. Fortunately his career as an English privateer was more successful and his service during the Spanish Armada of 1588 earned him a knighthood. This chart was published in Mortier's issue of Jaillot's 'Atlas Nouveau', although it also appeare … [Click Below for Full Description]

A highly desirable plate from a monumental work. From the celebrated work 'Metamorphasibus Insectorum Surinamensium.', first published in 1705. Further ed. include 1719, 1726, 1730 with additions added by M.S. Merian eldest daughter Joanna. Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: PL (Pieter van der Ley). Made by 'P. Sluyter' after 'Maria Sibylla Merian'. Pieter Sluyter / Sluiter (Dutch; active in Amsterdam ca. 1692-1711) worked as a professional engraver, etcher and draughtsman. Maria Sibylla Merian (Frankfurt, 1647-Amsterdam, 1717) was a naturalist and scientist who studied plants and insects. She also made detailed paintings of the subjects she studied. Her biological father was the engraver and publisher Matthaus Merian, and when he died, Merian's mother married Jacob Marrel. It was Marrel who encouraged young Maria Sibylla to start painting, and at the age of 13 she had painted her first insects and plants. Her study of insects, and especially the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly, was much celebrated in high society. It contested the notion that insects were "born from mud" in spontaneous generation. Merian studied specimens (partly in her own captivity), and described the life cycles of 186 insect species. Although she was correct in her notion of caterpillar metamorphosis, and several scientists in her time already adhered to this idea, the contemporary scientific language was still La … [Click Below for Full Description]
