Witchcraft ] BEAUMONT, John.
D. Browne et al, London, 1705. Hardcover, Octavo, (xvi) 400 pp. Original (?) 18th century calf with sympathetic later reback retaining boards, raised bands, gilt rules and titling and to spine. Marbled endpapers, frontispiece. The full title is 'An Historical, Physiological and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts, and other Magical Practices Containing an Account of the Genii or Familiar Spirits, both Good and Bad, that are said to attend Men in this Life; and what sensible Perceptions some Persons have had of them; (particularly the Author's own Experience for many Years.) Also of Appearances of Spirits after Death; Divine Dreams, Divination, Second Sighted Persons, etc. Likewise the Power of Witches, and the reality of other Magical Operations, clearly asserted. With a Refutation of Dr. Bekker's "World bewitch'd"; and other Authors that have opposed the Belief of them.' The author's personal belief in spirits and other ethereal beings which he perceived around him clearly influenced the composition of this work - which he drew from a wide variety of earlier sources. "John Beaumont (died 1731) practised surgery in Somersetshire and was elected F.R.S. as a result of his descriptions of exotic plants and underground caverns. His interests soon took him to the occult, resulting in this book that is amusing, gossipy, anecdotal, and grotesque. (The author's personal experiences with the spirits are rendered less unsettling when he hints that strong and frequent drink may have played a role in generating these encounters.)" William BEVERIDGE
1705. [Christianity, Religion] ~ DUBLIN COFFEE HOUSE AUCTION BEVERIDGE, William Institutionum chronologicarum librii II. Una cum totidem arithmetices chronologicae libellis Londini [i.e. London]. Typis Samuelis Roycroft, & prostant apud Gualterum Kettilby, 1705. Quarto. [8], 259pp, [5]. A handsome copy in contemporary panelled calf, with slight rubbing, crack to upper joint, and a little marking. Novbr. 25. 1740 / Price - 0:2:8d'. This well-preserved copy of the second edition of Bishop of St. Asaph William Beveridge's (bap 1637, d.1708) methodical and arithmetically accurate introduction to biblical chronology, first published in 1669, was, according to the inscription purchased from one of the many book auctions held at Dick's Coffee House, Dublin. A significant Irish institution, founded by bookseller and newspaperman Richard Pue, it hosted many sales between the 1690s and the 1760s. We can find no record of any printed catalogue for this sale, but given that the Vice- Provost of Trinity College, Dr. John Elwood, left his alma mater a £1000 bequest in the same year, it is likely safe to assume that it was his library which came under the hammer. A near-identical inscription (recording the sale price at a mere 1s 2d), almost certainly made by the same (unidentified) purchaser, features on a volume of Descartes De homine figuris (Leiden, 1662) sold at Christie's as lot 41 in the Courtiss S … [Click Below for Full Description]

This work comprises of eight treatises concerning ulcers, tumours, diseases of the anus, king's evil (surgical tuberculosis), wounds, gunshot wounds, fractures and luxations, and lues venerea (syphilis and gonorrhoea) respectively. Holy Bible
Nürnberg und Franckfurth: Johann Christoph Lochnern, 1705. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredibly rare, early 18th-century German Holy Bible. Following the Protestant Reformation, most Bibles published in Germany were printed from a Lutheran perspective, edited and translated from those originally established by Martin Luther. However, a select number of Catholic ministers remained devout through their careers, including 16th-century theologian Johann Dietenberger. Johann Dietenberger, a Catholic peer of Luther, published a German translation of the Bible and took the majority of his New Testament from Emser's edition. Notably, this edition was highly criticized by Martin Luther. The rare Dietenberger Bible, as it has become known, was only published from 1705 to 1747.

Francois Fenelon [de Salignac de la Mothe]
Chez Adrien Motjens, 1705. 16mo. Full Leather. An early copy of the Avantures de Telemaque, Fils d'Ulysse, or the "Adventures of Telemachus, son of Ulysses," published six years after the First. Written by Francois Fenelon while he was tutor of Louis, Duke of Burgundy. The work served as a didactic tool for the future ruler, the young 'Fils de France,' as well as a not-so-subtle critique of absolute monarchy and King Louis XIV. Literary historian Jean-Claude Bonnet is quoted as stating, that the Avantures is "the true key to the museum of the eighteenth century imagination;" an instant bestseller, Telemaque went through numerous editions. Text in French. Two volumes in one; additional title page for Tome II; pagination and collation reset. Title pages in black and red; with seventeen engraved plates throughout. Some offsetting to the type of signature Bb, suggesting the leaves were sewn in before they were dry; previous owners' names in ink on the rear flyleaves and first title page; lacking endpapers. [26], 272, [2], 328 pp. Full leather, with raised bands, leather label, and tooling in gilt in compartments. (Jean-Claude Bonnet, La Naissance du Pantheon: Essai sur le culte des grands hommes.).
