The Americas - Henri Châtelain, 1705-1720
1705. "Carte des Tres Curieuse de la Mer du Sud, contenant des remarques nouvelles et tres utiles non seulement sur les ports et iles de cette mer, mais aussy sur les principaux pays de l'Amerique tant Septentroinale que Meridionale, avec les noms & la route des voyageurs par qui la decouverte en a ete faite". Large copper-engraved map, on four joined sheets, in excellent condition. With splendid hand colouring. Published in Amsterdam by Henri Abraham Châtelain between 1705 and 1720. An exceptionally fine copy of "one of the most decorative and impressive maps of the Americas [and] .a veritable pictorial encyclopedia of the western hemisphere"' (Goss). "One of the most elaborately engraved maps of the Western Hemisphere ever produced"' (Schwartz & Ehrenberg). This monumental masterpiece is one of the most celebrated expressions of artistic cartography ever produced. Depicting the Americas and the entire Western Hemisphere, it was the most important map of Châtelain's encyclopaedic Atlas Historique. With maps devised by Châtelain and text by Nicholas Guedeville, it was published in seven folio volumes. This map appeared in the sixth volume as indicated by the notion in the upper right corner. The objective of Châtelain's opus was to arouse the reader's curiosity regarding matters of geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography; and this map dramatically achieves this goal, as a visual tour de force epitomises the exciting ethic of the age of discovery. In the upper center of the chart are nine portrait medalli … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm.
Paris: Boudot, 1705. First edition. First edition, first issue, of Leibniz's invention of binary arithmetic, the foundation of the electronic computer industry. This is the second of Leibniz's great trilogy of works on mathematics and computation, following Nova methodus pro maximis et minimis (1684), his independent invention of calculus, and preceding Brevis descriptio machinae arithmeticae (1710), his (decimal) mechanical calculating machine. "A dated manuscript by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, preserved in the Niedersachsische Landesbibliothek, Hannover, 'includes a brief discussion of the possibility of designing a mechanical binary calculator which would use moving balls to represent binary digits.' Though Leibniz thought of the application of binary arithmetic to computing in 1679, the machine he outlined was never built, and he published nothing on the subject until [the offered work]" (Norman). Leibniz viewed binary arithmetic less as a computational tool than as a means of discovering mathematical, philosophical and even theological truths. It was a candidate for the characteristica generalis, his long sought-for alphabet of human thought. With base 2 numeration Leibniz witnessed a confluence of several intellectual strands in his world view, including theological and mystical ideas of order, harmony and creation. ABPC/RBH list only one copy of this first issue (Zisska & Schauer, May 4, 2011, lot 461, €5,616). MACKWORTH, Humphry.
London: , 1705. Welsh mining in the 17th-century Small quarto (204 x 161 mm). Unbound, sewn as issued. A little toned, slight marking to title page. A very good copy. First edition. Sir Humphry Mackworth (1657–1727) was a major player in the Welsh mining industry in the latter 17th century, "bringing forward major employment, transportation, and technological innovations, and transforming the Welsh industrial scene" (ODNB). In 1698 he became deputy governor of the Company of Mine Adventurers. Mackworth attracted controversy, partly due to his propensity to use dubious share launches and unbacked bills to fund the company, and ran into trouble with the authorities. The present pamphlet, written in the third person but almost certainly by himself, defends Mackworth against the many charges brought against him, and expresses his grievances against the harassment he felt he was facing. Mackworth was later removed from the board of the company, although he was cleared of any illegal charges. A slightly expanded second edition followed later that year, distinguished by an extra page of text (see Hanson). Both are uncommon; ESTC records only five copies of this edition. ESTC T197397; Goldsmiths' 4142; Hanson 477; Kress S.2313.

First and only edition of Van den Burg's revised edition of the first Russian emblem book. The original emblem book was published in the Netherlands in 1705 as Symbola et Emblemata, with captions in Russian, German, Dutch, etc. It was published as part of a deal by Tsar Peter the Great granting the Dutch merchant Jan Tesing the right to print books in Holland for sale in Russia. The first genuinely Russian edition was published in 1788. This edition by the Dutch poet Hermanus van den Burg (1682-1752), uses the original plates and replaces most of the captions, including the Russian, by new two-line verses in Dutch. With a wormhole in the lower outer corner of the first 9 leaves and in the gutter, both not affecting the text, also with some minor spots. Binding somewhat rubbed along the extremities. Overall in good condition.

Fer, Nicolas de
1705. Rare double hemisphere world map showing Australia according to Abel Tasmnan's two voyage in 1642-44, surrounded by numerous tables. . 'The text notes that the map is a reduction of De Fer's 4 sheet wall map of the world, first issued in 1695 and De Fer further states that this map is the first map to be prepared based upon the astronomical observations of the Royal Academy of Sciences. In fact, it would appear that different sources entirely have been consulted for California, Japan and Australia. Australia is shown as substantially incomplete and still attached to New Guinea. New Zealand appears in partial outline. The conjectural land bridge from Asia to America is still in evidence. The Mississippi River has its confluence with the Gulf of Mexico considerably west of its true course, based upon La Salle's eroneous reports. There are many more place names on this 2 sheet edition of the wall map. The scientific commentary is quite remarkable and detailed. Engraved by Van Loon, the map includes vignettes show thunder, lightening, tempests, tides and volcanoes. Reference Shirley 600 435mm x 700mm (17.13" x 27.56")

NOLIN, Jean Baptiste.
Paris, 1705. Original outline colour. Four sheets conjoined, total 970 x 1290mm. Laid on canvas. An impressive wall map of France, with southern England and Holland, and the states of western Germany. It celebrates Louis XIV's victories early in the Nine Years' War (1689-97); the cartouche top right contains 14 medallion maps and plans of battles and towns. The title cartouche features the king in armour, one foot pressing down on the head of a gorgon, surrounded by allegorical figures. One of Louis's advisors holds a scroll with a map of England, a thinly-veiled statement of his intent to invade Britain in support of the deposed James II. This map was originally published in 1692; by the time this edition was published the Nine Years' Wars had finished, but the War of the Spanish Succession had begun, again with England as France's main opponent. Apart from the new date, the only apparent difference for this edition is the advert for Nolin's other maps of France above the title.

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in perfette condizioni." Johann Baptist Homann's well-engraved map of Sicily, Sardinia and Malta has a large decorative title cartouche. With ships in the sea and an inset of Valetta in lower right and Catania with mount Etna lower left. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was a German engraver and publisher, who established himself and his family as perhaps the most famous German map publishers.
