With splendid hand colouring. Published in Amsterdam by Henri Abraham Châtelain between 1705 and 1720. Size (print): 81 x 140 cm, (frame): 107 x 167 cm. An exceptionally fine copy of "one of the most decorative and impressive maps of the Americas [and] ...a veritable pictorial encyclopedia of the western hemisphere"? (Goss). "One of the most elaborately engraved maps of the Western Hemisphere ever produced"? (Schwartz & Ehrenberg). This monumental masterpiece is one of the most celebrated expressions of artistic cartography ever produced. Depicting the Americas and the entire Western Hemisphere, it was the most important map of Châtelain's encyclopaedic Atlas Historique. With maps devised by Châtelain and text by Nicholas Guedeville, it was published in seven folio volumes. This map appeared in the sixth volume as indicated by the notion in the upper right corner. The objective of Châtelain's opus was to arouse the reader's curiosity regarding matters of geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography; and this map dramatically achieves this goal, as a visual tour de force epitomises the exciting ethic of the age of discovery. In the upper center of the chart are nine portrait medallions … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLIAM BEVERIDGE.:
London, Samuel Roycroft, 1705. SECOND EDITION corrected, 1705, Latin text. Small 4to, approximately 190 x 140 mm, 7½ x 5¾ inches, pages: (8), 259, (4) - tables and Contents list, bound in full antique calf, covers blind panelled, raised bands and blind rules to spine, gilt lettered morocco label. Binding rubbed at extremities, small chip to tail of spine, hinges worn, upper hinge starting to crack at head and tail, endpapers browned, small ink mark in margin of title page, otherwise contents very clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good copy. This work is a manual on chronology by the learned clergyman William Beveridge (1637 - 1708), who died as the Bishop of St. Asaph. The first edition appeared in 1669. The author's aim was to provide an easy manual on chronology, the history of calendars and number systems of other cultures. He treats the subjects, whose presentation is so complicated and dismembered in the standard works of Scaliger, Petavius and others, in a concise elementary way. A copy of the 1705 edition was in Sir Isaac Newton's library. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Janssonius van Almeloveen, Theodorus ; [1657-1712]
excudit Joannes Wolters, Amstelaedami [Amsterdam] 1705 - [36], 128, 343, [1] pages; Contemporary full polished calf, five raised bands on the spine, title label on red leather lettered in gilt mounted to the second panel, the others have decorative tooling stamped in gilt, plain endpapers, edges decoratively sprinkled red. A superb copy, missing the edge of the cap to the bottom of the spine (barely noticeable on the shelf) -- and showing only a bit of light rubbing along the front hinge and at the points of the corners. A useful and learned chronology of the Roman consuls. The author, Theodorus Janssonius van Almeloven, was a Dutch physician who also spent considerable time and energy as the editor of various classical and medical works. He was born at Mijdrecht, near Utrecht, where his father was minister of the reformed church. He studied at Utrecht University under a variety of well known professors, and, although he did continue with theological studies at this level, he became convinced that he preferred to devote his life to medicine, rather than follow in his father's calling to the church. He took at medical degree in 1681. Janssonius settled at Gouda in 1687, where he married, and was founder of a learned society there in 1692. Books and bibliography seemed to be in his blood, as his mother had been a sister of Jan Jansson, the great printer of Amsterdam. As an editor, he produced editions with notes of Strabo, Juvenal, Quintilian, the Aphorisms of Hippocrates, Celsus, Apicius, Aurelian on Diseases, and Decker's Treatise on Supposititious Writings. MATTHAEUS, Gottlob, respondens; BÖTTNER, Gottfried, praesens
Leipzig: Johann Andreas Zschau, 1705. 4to (210 x 155 mm). [12] leaves. Roman, italic, Greek and Hebrew types. Woodcut initial and tailpieces, type ornament headpiece. 19th-century black buckram, title gold-lettered on upper cover. Provenance: from the Fürstenbergische Hofbibliothek, Donaueschingen, inkstamp, shelfmark labels.*** The historical section of a dissertation defended at Leipzig on December 19, 1705, on the evils occasioned to scholars by their "bad" wives. The author explores the philosophical meaning of malitia in this context, and cites numerous classical sources in his inquiry into the reasons for the wives' malice and the reactions of their learned spouses. The example of Socrates is offered as one who made the best of his bad marriage to Xantippe, and had the humility to put himself in the hands of God. This may have been the inspiration for the less rare and possibly tongue-in-cheek Dissertatio historico-moralis de misogynia eruditorum, a thesis presented at Leipzig in 1717. Both were part of a vogue for dissertations on academics and erudite men at German universities and particularly Leipzig in the first third of the eighteenth century. Another issue, in 10 leaves, was published under the imprint of the Leipzig printer J. C. Brandenburger. This is the historical section; the moral section was delivered two days later and published separately in 9 leaves. As in other copies leaf A3 is signed A5, and the catchword on the verso of leaf A4 does not match the first word of B1r, but the text is complete. A fine copy of an unusual dissertation.
