First Edition. Hardcover. The Title continues = …." With a Collection Of Poems, Satyrs, Letters, Dialogues, Essays, Characters, Maxims of State Valuable Speeches, in both Houses of Parliament, by Several Lords and Commons: Printed from Original Manuscripts, that give a light into the Secret History of the Times. Written by the Late Duke of Buckingham; Duke of Lauderdal; Marquis of Halifax; … Earl Of Rochester; … Sir William Temple… Sir Edward Seymour; … Mr Dryden; Sir George Etherege... ; Mr. Cowley; Mr. Otway; … Captain Ayloffe; … " (and many others…). In the (probably) original full leather boards, with a burgundy, (dulled) gilt title label. The boards are scruffy, scuffed and scraped, with corners through to the boards, some leather loss, and the front hinge is split and holding on with 5 of the 6 'strings'. There is some leather loss to the top and bottom of the spine, and the spine has a centre 'crack' throughout - but all boards/spine are present and holding tight. The page fore-edges are pretty age browned. Internally = plain endpapers - browned and with some light marks/grubbiness - with a full page b/w engraved portrait frontispiece of 'George. Duke. Marquess and Earle of Buckingham…' . A former owners' name in old faded ink at the very top of the title page. London: Printed for J. Tonson, 1705. First edition, with the usual error of page 125 misprinted 215. 8vo, modern quarter tan calf period style, red leather label, gilt lettering. Six engravings in the text. Half-title present. Addison's extensive and popular account of travel through Italy, which was standard reading for the 18th century Englishman Grand Tourist. It includes his poem "Letter from Italy," as well as numerous extracts from Roman literature. Addison, who was obviously fond of Italy, begins his Preface "There is certainly no place in the World where a man may travel with greater pleasure and advantage than in Italy." Four contemporary annotations in the margins, pointing out errors by Addison. Lacking the front and rear blanks; some foxing and light stains in the text; paper repair to half-title; a good copy.

Ed. orig. illustrée d'un frontispice fragile et de 12 fig. gravées hors-texte. « où l'on voit le Secret de la multiplication du Blé, et les moyens d'augmenter considérablement le revenu des biens de la Campagne: De nouvelles découvertes pour grossir, multiplier, et embellir les Fleurs, et les Fruits: Une nouvelle manière de provigner facilement les Arbres: Plusieurs Végétations singulières et admirables: Et les merveilles de la Palingénésie, ou Résurrection des Plantes. » Cet ouvrage, rempli de bizarreries, est l'œuvre de l'abbé de Vallemont, physicien né à Pont-Audemer en 1649. Outre les chapitres qui concernent l'agriculture proprement dite et le catalogue de tous les légumes qui se cultivaient dans le potager de Versailles sous Louis XIV, on trouve ici des curiosités du genre : arbre qui parle, plante qui chasse les démons, végétation métallique artificielle, le phénix végétal ou la résurrection des plantes par leurs cendres, l'usage des larmes qui coulent de la vigne, la mandragore.
