Paul DECKER "il vecchio"
Beautiful engraving depicting the 1701 battle, held in an ornamental and wonderfully decorated frame. FORBES, William
Edinburgh: Printed by the Heirs and Successors of Andrew Anderson 1705, 1706. Three works bound in one, all first editions. (xvi), 450, 1, (21); 36; 44 pp. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, recent gilt lettered label to style. Neat repairs to the head and joints, very good. The second work is the author's rejoinder against a pamphlet composed by James Gordon, the parson of Banchory-Devenick, with Forbes obviously taking great exception to his "charitable observations". In response someone called R. Jameson - "A Gentleman of the Country" - wrote "Some Just Reflexions on a Nonsensical and Scurril Pasquill Against the Parson of Banchory, Penned by a Brain-sick Bigott, named William Forbes, Advocat", which again the author could not let pass without considerable comment. ALLESTREE (Richard)
Oxford Printed at the Theater, 1705. 8vo, 189 x 120 mms., pp. [xxiv], 270 [271 Contents, 272 blank], engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title-page, attractively bound in Oxford panelled red morocco, gilt rules on spine; front joint slightly cracked, but a very good copy. The Church of England clergyman Richard Allestree (1621/2–1681) joined the royalist forces in 1642 and managed to keep his academic post at Oxford until 1648. After the restoration in 1660 he was restored to a powerful position in Oxford and was a serious scholar and conscientious lecturer. He published The Whole Duty of Man in 1657 and The Gentleman's Calling in 1660. The Ladies Calling was published in 1673 and is, astonishingly, not mentioned in the ODNB entry on Allestree. "It is always dangerous to ascribe considerable influence and significance to a particular text in the emergence of an ideology but the publication of Richard Allestree's The Ladies Calling in 1673 seems to have a real claim to be a signal moment in the creation of modern English femininity. The appeal of the book undoubtedly lay in its exceptional clarity and well organised framework of exposition. It discussed what was required of women from the upper ranks of society - the class motive is pervasive - firstly in 'five general qualifications, duties, and ornaments of women' and secondly with regard to the 'respective duties' and 'peculiar cautions' of the three stages of a woman's life" (Anthony J. Fletcher: Gender, Sex, and Subordination in England, 1500 - 1800 [1999]). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lightly spotteed; pp surprisingly supple. 260 b/w engraved plates (incl. frontispiece, and plate at beginning of section two): a number of plates and pp have damaged edges, or have been archivally repaired. Plate nos 109/110 and 139/140 absent(?) from first section of book, and nos 17/18, 19/20, 21/22 and 23/24 absent(?) from second section. The title page says there are "Five Scriptural Maps", though only two are present (possibly the others were never bound): Paradise or The Garden of Eden, and a map of the Mediterranean + Near East in New Testament times. The dedication is "To Her Sacred Majesty ANNE, (By the Grace of God) Queen of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c." Notwithstanding the wear in places, and occasional lacunae, this is a nice example of an impressive and important work. ; 4to (9 1/2" x 15"); 293+103 pages [Attributes: Hard Cover]
