Pierre MORTIER (1661 - 1711)
Bibliografia: Cremonini pp. 83-90."

STEENWIJK, Frans van.
E. de La Fontaine Verwey, Illustr. letterk. werken XVIIIe eeuw, p. 175; W.A.P. Smit, Kalliope in de Nederl., pp. 436, 836. First and only edition of a neoclassical epic poem in rhymed Dutch verse about Claudius Civilis (also known as Julius Civilis), leader of the 69/70 AD Batavian rebellion against the authority of classical Rome. What little is known of the real events comes from Tacitus's Historiae, but in the Dutch Republic the story was revived as a heroic story of the ancient Dutch bravely standing up against the unfair authority of the powerful Roman Empire. The story remained in vogue throughout the 18th-century and the Dutch poet Frans van Steenwijk (1705-1788) gave it its most extensive treatment in the present work. The present copy is of special interest for its beautiful engraved frontispiece by Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816). It appears in this copy both uncoloured, so that one can see every detail of the engraving, and luxuriously hand-coloured and highlighted with gold. With bookplate. In very good condition and with very generous margins. With the top of the spine slightly damaged, the front hinge cracked and a few scuff marks, but the binding remains generally good.

Addison, Joseph
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1705. First edition. Hardcover. vg. Octavo. (12) 534 (10)pp. Rebound in modern half calf over marbled boards with gilt ruling and lettering on red leather label of spine; raised bands. Speckled edges. Black double frame on title page. Historiated headpiece on dedication page. Handsome first edition of Addison's famous journey through Italy with some in-text illustrations depicting various Italian coins. "After travelling south to Marseilles Addison took ship for Italy on 12 December 1700, but was driven back by a storm. In the end he reached Genoa by land, and then proceeded through Pavia to Milan and then Venice, after which he followed the accustomed route south, choosing to go via San Marino and Loreto as he journeyed briefly to Rome and then on to Naples. He climbed Vesuvius, sailed round Capri, and sailed back up the coast to Rome. Here he passed a more extended sojourn, visiting churches, annotating architecture and antiquities, and undertaking trips out to literary shrines such as Tivoli and Frascati. There were poetic echoes on almost every corner for a man as deeply imbued in the ancient corpus as Addison, and he was to coin the phrase 'classic ground' to express a pervading atmosphere of ageless accomplishment, as the familiar texts sprang unbidden into his mind" (ODNB). Minor wear along edges of binding. Light browning of half-title and light water-staining in lower left corner of last few pages. [Attributes: First Edition]

MACKWORTH, Humphry.
London: , 1705. Small quarto (204 x 161 mm). Unbound, sewn as issued. A little toned, slight marking to title page. A very good copy. First edition. Sir Humphry Mackworth (1657–1727) was a major player in the Welsh mining industry in the latter 17th century, "bringing forward major employment, transportation, and technological innovations, and transforming the Welsh industrial scene" (ODNB). In 1698 he became deputy governor of the Company of Mine Adventurers. Mackworth attracted controversy, partly due to his propensity to use dubious share launches and unbacked bills to fund the company, and ran into trouble with the authorities. The present pamphlet, written in the third person but almost certainly by himself, defends Mackworth against the many charges brought against him, and expresses his grievances against the harassment he felt he was facing. Mackworth was later removed from the board of the company, although he was cleared of any illegal charges. A slightly expanded second edition followed later that year, distinguished by an extra page of text (see Hanson). Both are uncommon; ESTC records only five copies of this edition. ESTC T197397; Goldsmiths' 4142; Hanson 477; Kress S.2313.

Donker Hendrick II (1664 ca. - 1739)
By Hendrick Donker inde Nieubrug:steedg. Bellissimo esemplare con magnifica coloritura coeva. Edizione molto rara. [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierre MORTIER (1661 - 1711)
First and only edition of Van den Burg's revised edition of the first Russian emblem book. The first genuinely Russian edition was published in 1788. This edition by the Dutch poet Hermanus van den Burg (1682-1752), uses the original plates and replaces most of the captions, including the Russian, by new two-line verses in Dutch. With a wormhole in the lower outer corner of the first 9 leaves and in the gutter, both not affecting the text, also with some minor spots. Binding somewhat rubbed along the extremities.
