KUNCKEL von LOEWENSTERN, Johannes.
Nuremberg, Zieger, 1705. With engraved frontispiece and c. 100 woodcuts in the text, partly full-page. (4) leaves, 1357 pp., (28) leaves index. Thick Sm.-4to. Contemporary vellum. Nuremberg, Zieger, 1705. Johann Kunckel (1630/38-1703) was the son of an alchemist at the court of Duke Friedrich of Holstein, acted as his father's assistant and worked for pharmacists and glassmakers, but received no university training. He is considered to be the discoverer of phosphor. Kunckel was appointed director of the alchemical laboratory of Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg on the Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) in Berlin, where he made alchemy experiments and introduced glass technology to Germany. He was also the inventor of genuine ruby glass. In 1698 he became minister of the mines in Sweden, and also became member of the Leopoldina Academy. Kunckel is a more important figure in the history of chemistry than seems generally realised (Duven). The present work is a detailed compendium of engineering, chemistry, metallurgy and their application of the arts and crafts. Part 1: "Die wahre Erkäntnus der Ertzen und Metallen" is mainly about fire arts, mineralogy and the parting of gold and silver. Part 2: "Die schöne Form-Kunst, Bereitung guter Feuer-beständiger Haffner-Geschirr" deals mostly with china, tile stoves, and glass-making. Part 3: "Allerhand schöne Glas-Künste" contains mostly detailed recipes on the preparation and application of paint. Part 4: "Von denen natürlichen Edelgesteinen" is about gemstones, pearls, and coral. Part 5: "Chymische Secreta und Medicinalia" deals with the … [Click Below for Full Description]

ADDISON, Joseph.
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1705 - Octavo (196 x 115 mm). Early 19th-century polished calf, titles to spine gilt in compartments, gilt frames to covers, edges speckled red, marbled endpapers. Acton family bookplate to front pastedown. Small newspaper clipping laid in as page marker. Pencil annotation to front free binder's blank verso. Expert restoration to head of spine, slight rubbing to extremities, a couple of faint scratches to boards, browning to prelims and endmatter, an excellent copy. First edition, with p. 125 misprinted as 215, of this influential Grand Tour diary, "often eloquent on art, history, and literature" (ODNB). Addison's travels in Italy led him to coin the phrase "'classic ground' to express a pervading atmosphere of ageless accomplishment" (ibid.) He was close friends with the publisher and fellow Kit-Cat club member Jacob Tonson, who published most of his works. This copy with the bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to the front free endpaper, heir to a successful chain of dispensing chemists, based in Nelson, Lancashire: "A collector of books, in a delightful room at his home, white-painted bookshelves stacked high on all the available wall space show to advantage the hand-tooled leather bindings of a collection that has been acquired slowly and with discrimination over the years" (The Chemist and Druggist, 7 September 1957). Addison, Joseph]
London: Jacob Tonson, 1705. First edition. Engraved headpieces and vignettes. [xii], 534, [10, index] pp., with half-title. 8vo. Contemporay Cambridge calf, citron morocco spine label, red sprinkled edges. Small chip to head of spine, else fine. Old shelf label at foot of spine, book label on front pastedown. First edition. Engraved headpieces and vignettes. [xii], 534, [10, index] pp., with half-title. 8vo. An incredibly fresh and clean copy of the first edition of Addison's account of his grand tour experiences in Italy. "After travelling south to Marseilles Addison took ship for Italy on 12 December 1700, but was driven back by a storm. In the end he reached Genoa by land, and then proceeded through Pavia to Milan and then Venice, after which he followed the accustomed route south, choosing to go via San Marino and Loreto as he journeyed briefly to Rome and then on to Naples. He climbed Vesuvius, sailed round Capri, and sailed back up the coast to Rome. Here he passed a more extended sojourn, visiting churches, annotating architecture and antiquities, and undertaking trips out to literary shrines such as Tivoli and Frascati. There were poetic echoes on almost every corner for a man as deeply imbued in the ancient corpus as Addison, and he was to coin the phrase 'classic ground' to express a pervading atmosphere of ageless accomplishment, as the familiar texts sprang unbidden into his mind" (ODNB). It was while crossing the Alps in December of 1701 that Addison wrote the poem "A Letter from Italy," one of his most popular. ESTC T74575 [Attributes: First Edition]

Augspurg: [J.U. Krauss?], 1705. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio (315 x 200mm). 5 parts in 1 volume separately titled (Patriarchen, Richter in Israel, Konige in Jerusalem, Propheten, Apostel). Rare Third Edition. Johann Ulrich Kraus was initially trained as a draftsman by his father, the carpenter and architect Johann Jakob Kraus and was probably later a student of Melchior Küsells in Vienna. The French engraver Sebastian Le Clerc had also a great influence on his work. Kraus’ engravings were widely praised for their meticulous attention to detail. Especially notable are his depictions of architecture and geographical views, which made him one of the most celebrated artists of his trade. This work, Krauss’ buchillustratorisches masterpiece, is chiefly illustrated by plates divided into two sections, the uppermost is a pictorial representation of a biblical scene and below is an emblematic interpretation amid sumptuous decor; both exemplifying all the forms and ideas of the Baroque. The bible text, which is written in rhyme, is set in between the two. Amongst the plates are some impressive portraits of the patriarchs in the book of Moses and skillfully crafted scenes of the New Testament. Some of these … [Click Below for Full Description]
