Maria Sibylla Merian - Oker (Okra)
An exceptionally fine copy of "one of the most decorative and impressive maps of the Americas [and] ...a veritable pictorial encyclopedia of the western hemisphere" (Goss). "One of the most elaborately engraved maps of the Western Hemisphere ever produced" (Schwartz & Ehrenberg). This monumental masterpiece is one of the most celebrated expressions of artistic cartography ever produced. Depicting the Americas and the entire Western Hemisphere, it was the most important map of Châtelain's encyclopaedic Atlas Historique. With maps devised by Châtelain and text by Nicholas Guedeville, it was published in seven folio volumes. This map appeared in the sixth volume as indicated by the notion in the upper right corner. The objective of Châtelain's opus was to arouse the reader's curiosity regarding matters of geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography; and this map dramatically achieves this goal, as a visual tour de force epitomises the exciting ethic of the age of discovery. LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm.
Jean Boudot, Paris, 1705. First edition, first issue, of Leibniz?s invention of binary arithmetic, the foundation of the electronic computer industry. This is the second of Leibniz?s great trilogy of works on mathematics and computation, following Nova methodus pro maximis et minimis (1684), his independent invention of calculus, and preceding Brevis descriptio machinae arithmeticae (1710), his (decimal) mechanical calculating machine. ?A dated manuscript by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, preserved in the Niedersachsische Landesbibliothek, Hannover, ?includes a brief discussion of the possibility of designing a mechanical binary calculator which would use moving balls to represent binary digits.? Though Leibniz thought of the application of binary arithmetic to computing in 1679, the machine he outlined was never built, and he published nothing on the subject until [the offered work]? (Norman). Leibniz viewed binary arithmetic less as a computational tool than as a means of discovering mathematical, philosophical and even theological truths. It was a candidate for the characteristica generalis, his long sought-for alphabet of human thought. With base 2 numeration Leibniz witnessed a confluence of several intellectual strands in his world view, including theological and mystical ideas of order, harmony and creation. ABPC/RBH list only one copy of this first issue (Zisska & Schauer, May 4, 2011, lot 461, ?5,616). The copy of the extracted leaves sold at the Hans Merkle sale (Reiss, Auktion 85, October 15, 2002, lot 696) realised ?6500.?About this time [1679] Leibniz also outlined … [Click Below for Full Description]

FER, Nicolas de.
Paris, 1705. Two sheets conjoined, total 440 x 700mm. Bottom left margin restored, two tears skillfully repaired. A map of the countries surrounding the Baltic but extending west through Germany, Holland, to southern England, engraved by van Loon and first published 1700. The focus of the map is the Great Northern War (1700-1721), in which Russia fought to regain Ingria from Sweden in order to have a sea port on the Baltic, but involving many other powers (including Britain and the Ottoman Empire). In 1703 the Russians took Nyenskans, a Swedish fortress at the mouth of the River Neva and renamed it after the tsar; only two years later this map was updated to mark 'Petersbourg'.

Antique print, untitled. The different life cycle stages of the Tetrio Sphinx butterfly near the branches, leaves and flowers of the Musk Okra. A highly desirable plate from a monumental work. From the celebrated work 'Metamorphasibus Insectorum Surinamensium.', first published in 1705. Further ed include 1719 and 1726 with additions added by M.S. Merian eldest daughter Joanna. We do not know the exact ed. of this plate. Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: Strasbourg lilly and initial WR below (Wendelin Riehel) Made by 'P. Sluyter' after 'Maria Sibylla Merian'. Pieter Sluyter / Sluiter (Dutch; active in Amsterdam ca. 1692-1711) worked as a professional engraver, etcher and draughtsman. Maria Sibylla Merian (Frankfurt, 1647-Amsterdam, 1717) was a naturalist and scientist who studied plants and insects. She also made detailed paintings of the subjects she studied. Her biological father was the engraver and publisher Matthaus Merian, and when he died, Merian's mother married Jacob Marrel. It was Marrel who encouraged young Maria Sibylla to start painting, and at the age of 13 she had painted her first insects and plants. Her study of insects, and especially the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly, was much celebrated in high society. It contested the notion that insects were "born from mud" in spontaneous generation. Merian studied specimens (partly in her own captivity), and described the life cycles of 186 insect species. Although she was correct in her notion of caterpillar metamorphosis, and several scientists in her time already adhered to this idea, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Nicholaus von Leuchsenhoffen, a councilor from inner-Austria, produced it to celebrate the one-hundred year anniversary of inner-Austrian government, which was established in 1565. Noteworthy are the 82 fine copper-plate engravings illustrating the individual coats-of-arms of the governors, whose portraits occasionally appear above their coats-of-arms. The work also contains a beautiful engraving and a table with the presentation of the meeting of the provinces in the castle of Graz. According to von Bourcy, copies of this rare work in the Grazer Universitätsbibliothek and in the Steiermärkische Landesbibliothek (neither of which is recorded in OCLC/WorldCat) still contain handwritten … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lahontan, Louis Armand, Baron de
Amsterdam: Chez Francois l'Honore, 1705. Two volumes. [18],376pp. plus eleven folding plates and a frontispiece; 336 ,[2]pp. plus nine folding plates and a frontispiece map (most plates and maps folding). Lacks the map, "Carte de la Riviere Longue." Titlepages printed in red and black. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spines gilt. Front board of second volume detached; front board of first volume nearly so, held by cords. Boards rubbed and worn, chipped at spine ends. Institutional blindstamp on both titlepages, and in a few other instances. Quite clean internally overall. A decent copy, although lacking a map. In a cloth slipcase, gilt leather label. Second edition, variant issue, with the imprint of Franois l'Honore, "revue, corrigee, & augmentee." Lahontan's narrative is a curious blending of fact and fantasy, to be honored in regard to his account of his travels in the Great Lakes region, but to be accompanied by tongue placed amply in cheek in regard to his claims to have journeyed west of the Mississippi, which Howes states have the veracity of "the legends of the sea serpent." Contains "A Short Dictionary of the most Universal Language of the Savages" in the second volume, as well as some specimens of the Huron dialect. The most notable map is the "Carte de la Riviere Longue," (lacking in this copy) depicting an imaginary river extending westward from Lake Superior. The "Carte General de Canada" is also considerably confused geographically. It remains a classic voyage, partially imaginary, by a man "of more than ordinary learning and intelligence" (Sabin).
