Sancti Gregorii Papae I.Cognomenta magni. Opera omnia. Ad manuscriptos codices Romanos, Gallicanos, Anglicanos emendata, aucta, & illustrata notis. Tomus I - IV

Paris, Sumptibus Claudii Rigaud, 1705 Folio, Wunderschöne barocke Ledereinbände mit reich verzierten Buchrücken auf 7 echten Bünden, Tomus I-IV (cptl.), roter Buchschnitt. Sehr gut erhaltene Exemplare.

Edges speckled red.= A beautiful, contemporarily-bound copy of the first edition. Georg Eberhard Rumphius (1628-1702) worked for the Dutch East-India Company and was stationed on the island of Ambon for most of his life. He devoted much time to research on the flora and fauna of the island. Despite disasters in his private life and the loss of his library and manuscripts in a fire, he managed to compile this great work on the natural history of tropical marine animals, with a special focus on shells. Rumphius did not live to see the published version of his book. It was published from the manuscripts he sent back to Holland in various shipments. Since most of Rumphius' drawings never arrived, the publishers commissioned Maria Sybilla Merian to draw the illustrations for the "Amboinsche Rariteitkamer". Merian had just returned from Surinam and was in financial need while she worked on her masterpiece about its insects. Needless to say, apart from being a very original work of natural history, this title also stands out for the 60 very fine plates. "D'Amboinsche Rariteitkamer stands apart from those other eighteenth-century publications which may be considered among the gems of conchological literature, for it is based upon the work of a near-genius who, like Aristotle, observed the fascinating creatures living in the waters around a small island and made a valuable contribution to the literature of biology in general and of conchology in particular" (Peter Dance, "Delights for the eyes and the mind. A brief survey of conchological books"). This copy contains the often-missing portrait. Provenance: the small armorial bookplate of G. N. P. Hasselaer mounted on the front pastedown. Gerard Nicolaes Pieter Hasselaer (1755-1812) was the last of the elder branch of a famous Haarlem family. Plates clean, with very nice and strong impressions and wide margins. A few small, skilful repairs to the near-perfectly preserved original binding. Very rare in this fine state. Landwehr 591; Nissen ZBI, 3518; Ruinen, pp. 8-9; Ward & Carozzi, 1937 (1741 ed.).

FUNDACION DE MAIORASGO LOS SENORES DON LUIS DE SANTA CRUZ Y PADILLA CONDE DE SAN JUAN & LURIGANCHO Y EL GENL. SR. JOSEPH DE SANTA CRUZ Y GALLARDO SUHISO SOBRE EL OFICIO DE THESORERO DE LA CASA DE LA MONEDA Y UNA CHACARA Y TIERRA EN EL VALLE DE LURIGANCHO Y EL TITULO DE CASTILLA DE DHO. CONDADO [manuscript title]

[Lima], 1705. [31] leaves. [bound with:] [OFFICIAL MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT, DATED 1782 - 1783]. [34] leaves. Folio. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of pigskin ties, lettered on cover. Very minor soiling; some small ink-related paper loss. Near fine. This document comprises the petition of Luis de Santa Cruz y Padilla, general of the Royal Armies in Peru and Chile, and his wife, Julia Fernández Gallardo, for recognition of the establishment of an entailed estate in primogeniture of their farm and lands in the Valley of Lurigancho, for the confirmation of their title in Castile, and of their son as perpetual treasurer of the Royal Mint of Lima as granted by Royal Order of November 12, 1703. This is followed by a copy of the Royal Provision of appointment and entailment as perpetual treasurer and inspector, confirmation of entailed estate of lands in Lurigancho, and of the title, reciting in detail the various privileges and duties of the treasurer and inspector, given in Madrid, November 12, 1703, with confirmation by the Royal Accountants in Madrid, November 14, 1703. This is continued with the confirmation accompanied by a recital of genealogy, discussion of Santa Cruz lineages, and reiteration of the terms of the Royal Provision dated and subscribed by notary in Lima, August 3, 1705, and attested to by witnesses and subscribed by a notary in Lima, March 17, 1735. The second section is lengthy testimony in Lima on July 10, 1782 by María Narcisa de Santa Cruz y Centeno, marquise and widow of Moscoso, and Mariana de Santa Cruz y Centeno, marquise and widow of Otero, reciting lineage in support of claims in litigation with other claimants to succession in the entailed estate, prior testimony and claims of numerous heirs to inheritance, orders of monetary distributions, termination of the post of treasurer due to incapacity of the current heir and renunciation by female descendants, and agreement of the heirs to terminate the entailed estate, dated February 16, 1782. Lurigancho is an agricultural region some twenty-five miles to the east of Lima on the right bank of the Río Rimac. The area was isolated until a road was built to it through mountainous terrain during the viceroyalty of Manuel de Aman y Junient (1761-76). José de Santa Cruz y Gallardo (1661-1743), second Count of San Juan de Lurigancho, was lieutenant governor and tax collector of the province of Yamparaes, tax collector of Mizque and Pocona, and chief magistrate of the mines of the Royal District of Charcas. He traveled to Madrid and was received into the Order of Santiago, appointed Captain General of Chile, and granted the title of Count of San Juan de Lurigancho for his father in 1694-95. He returned to Lima in 1695, but his privileges were suspended by Royal Order in 1697, and he returned to Spain to reclaim them. On December 10, 1702 he was named perpetual treasurer of the Royal Mint in Lima, established in 1565 by viceroy Lope García de Castro, a post inherited by his heirs following his death, and he returned to Lima in 1703. His son, Diego Santa Cruz y Centeno (1707-74), became assistant treasurer of the mint, and in 1743 he inherited the post of treasurer from his father. In 1754 he was excommunicated, but this was lifted to permit his continuing in his post. Entailed estates, designed to maintain real property intact over generations and usually involving primogeniture, deprived other heirs of opportunity to inherit. Initially, this situation was resolved by entry into religious or bureaucratic life, but with the passage of time and subsequent increase of the number of heirs, these solutions became impossible. As more heirs of the holder of the entailed estate went from wealth to poverty on his death, the practice was abolished, and remaining estates such as this one were dissolved by mutual agreement of the family.

[THE PSALMS HYMNS, AND SPIRITUAL SONGS, OF THE OLD & NEW- TESTAMENT: FAITHFULLY TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH MEETER. FOR THE USE, EDIFICATION AND COMFORT OF THE SAINTS IN PUBLICK AND PRIVATE, ESPECIALLY IN NEW-ENGLAND]

[Boston: Printed by B. Green, for Benjamin Eliot, and Nicholas Boone, 1705. 3-505,[7]pp. Titlepage in expert facsimile. 16mo. Contemporary paneled calf with later metal clasp. Small chips to boards, edge wear and rubbing. Contemporary ink inscriptions on endpapers, small paper bookplate and withdrawal stamp on the front pastedown from the Fitchburg Historical Society. Marginal chipping, some tears, a few leaves with minor loss. In unsophisticated original condition, very good. In a half morocco box. The extraordinarily rare twelfth edition of the Bay Psalm Book, one of the most famous of all American books. The first edition of the Bay Psalm Book, printed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1640, is the first book printed in what is now the United States, and an impossible rarity, with only eleven surviving copies. Besides its fame as an imprint, the Bay Psalm Book is a unique expression of the theological tenets which founded New England and American Protestantism. Its translation and longevity as a text lie at the heart of the American religious experience. At the time of the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, the standard English hymn book, translated by Thomas Sternhold and John Hopkins, had gone through almost two hundred editions. In the meantime, in 1612, the Separatist Puritans had published, in exile in Holland, their own, stricter translation of the Psalms from the original Hebrew. This was used in the Puritan settlement at Plymouth. The Congregational ministers who controlled the Bay Colony felt there were many errors in the Sternhold-Hopkins version, but wished to disassociate themselves from the radicals at Plymouth. They determined to make a new translation from the original Hebrew, a task accomplished in 1639. The new translation was the work of many hands, although the primary translators were Richard Mather, father of Increase and grandfather of Cotton; John Eliot, later famous as the Apostle to the Indians and creator of the Eliot Indian Bible, and Thomas Welde, author of important tracts on early New England. For more than a century, this translation, quickly and almost universally referred to as the Bay Psalm Book, became the primary hymn book of New England, passing through more than fifty editions in Massachusetts and in England, where it was adopted by many Non-Conformist congregations. Psalm books and hymn books were literally read to pieces. Despite the rather high survival rate of the first edition, only seven perfect and four imperfect copies survive of the next eleven American editions. There are no surviving copies of some editions, only imperfect survivors of others, issued between 1651 and 1705. Below are the editions and the known copies, which are concentrated in the holdings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, where they were vigorously collected during the 19th century, and the former William G. Mather collection, mostly collected 1910-1930, and given to the University of Virginia during World War II as a gift of philanthropist Tracy G. McGregor. The only exceptions are the two copies of the third edition, at New York Public and John Carter Brown, the copy of the ninth at the British Library, and the present copy. After the first edition, these are the known copies of the next eleven editions: 2nd edition, 1648? No known copy. 3rd edition, Cambridge, Samuel Green, 1651. Two complete copies, New York Public Library (NN) and John Carter Brown Library (RPJCB). 4th-6th editions. No known copies, although there is a reference to a Cambridge, 1668 edition. There were editions published in England for Boston booksellers during this period which may account for these designations. 7th edition, Boston, Benjamin Harris, 1693. One complete copy in a private collection. 8th edition, Boston, Samuel Phillips, 1695. One complete copy at Massachusetts Historical Society (MHi). 9th edition, Boston, B. Green, 1698. Two complete copies, at MHi and the British Library, one imperfect at the University of Virginia (ViU). This is the first edition to contain music. 10th edition, Boston, B. Green, 1702. Two complete copies, ViU and Harvard, one imperfect at ViU. This edition has several variant titlepages. 11th edition. No known copy. 12th edition, Boston, B. Green, 1705. One imperfect copy at the ViU (lacking fifty-eight leaves and described by its own institution as a "mutilated copy"), and the present copy (lacking only the titlepage and minor portions of a few leaves). Virtually no new copies of early editions of the Bay Psalm Book have appeared since the collecting efforts of William G. Mather, which ended around 1930. Since then, this is the only copy of any of the first twelve editions to come to the market. An extraordinary rare opportunity to acquire the earliest obtainable American edition of the Bay Psalm Book. BRISTOL B270. SHIPTON & MOONEY 39420. ESTC W4786. HOLMES, MINOR MATHERS 53-G. BRITTON & LOWENS, AMERICAN SACRED MUSIC IMPRINTS 38 (entries 35-53 list all the editions of the Bay Psalm Book to contain music).

Historia naturalis ranarum nostratium in qua omnes earum proprietates, praesertim quae ad generationem ipsarum pertinent, fusius enarrantur. Nuremberg, Johann Joseph Fleischmann, [1753]-1758. 2 parts in 1 volume. Royal folio (48 x 33 cm). With hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 2 sets of the 24 engraved plates. Each of the 24 plates is present twice: beautifully hand-coloured with the figures still unnumbered, and in black and white with the figures numbered (and key letters added) but with Rösel's name erased. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine.

Nissen ZBI 3464; DSB XI, pp. 502-503; Junk, Rara, pp. 162-163. First and only edition, in Latin and German, of a beautiful work on frogs and toads, important from both an artistic and scientific point of view. August Johann Rösel (1705-1759), the author and artist, was the only natural historian of his time who studied both entomology and amphibians and reptiles, an essential combination in today's study of ecosystems. The text is printed in 2 columns, Latin on the left and German on the right, describing the natural history of all German frogs and toads in great detail. While the text proved valuable, the book's greatest fame lies in its plates. They are well designed from a practical point of view, highly artistic and skilfully executed, providing detailed and accurate information, and are beautifully and naturally coloured by hand. The 24 plates are present twice as intended by the publisher. One suite, in the earlier state without figure numbers or key letters, is beautifully coloured by hand, while the other, in the later state with figure numbers and key letters added, but with Rösel's name erased, is in black & white. In fine condition and virtually untrimmed, with only the half-title slightly spotted and occasionally very minor foxing or spots in the text. The binding is worn and scuffed but remains structurally sound. A beautiful copy of a beautiful book: a classic of natural history illustration in colour and an important contribution to the study of frogs and toads.
