He developed a forward-looking project for a United States of Europe through the creation of a European Assembly made of deputies that could discuss and adjudicate controversies peacefully. He is therefore considered the very first thinker to suggest the creation of a European Parliament</p><p>Seeing conditions deteriorating, Penn decided to appeal directly to the King and the Duke. Plate: 'De Apotheker.' (The Pharmacist.) From a 1704 edition of 'Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf'. Engraving and etching combination on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: This scarse original old antique print / plate originates from: 'Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf' (Mirror of Human Activities.) or 'Iets voor Allen.' (Something for everyone.). See subject description for exact source. In 1694 the Amsterdam artists Jan and Casper Luyken published their celebrated work 'Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf.', a collection of one hundred fine engravings depicting the arts and crafts. Each print is depicting a particular occupation, with the name of the profession, one or two explanatory lines above the plate and followed by a six-line poem below. The book was an instant success and was reprinted many times up to 1767. Other printers and booksellers tried to gain profit from the popular best seller as well. The first of many pirated editions appeared as soon as 1695. As such the work by Abraham de St. Clara who published: 'Etwas fur Alle .' or 'Iets voor Allen' (Something for everyone.) in several editions from 1699 on in both German and Dutch, is best known. This work had 200 engravings, including many, mostly in reverse, after the Luyken prints mentioned above. We carry many of these prints as well. Please inquire if you are looking for a particular profession, but cannot find it.Artists and Engravers: Jan Luyken (1649-1712) belonged to the best engravers of the period. His son Casper (1672-1708) assisted with the making of the prints. Abraham a Sancta Clara (1644 - 1709 … [Click Below for Full Description]

George Psalmanaazaar
London: Dan Brown, 1704 A fair copy of the 1st edition of this famous hoax, with 12 of 16 plates, one folding. Bound in newer quarter leather with marbled boards, and raised bands, blind-stamped designs, and title label to spine. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks 4 plates and there is some staining and occasional worming to margins. 'George Psalmanaazar' was born in France around 1679, and created false identities to enable him to travel more safely and cheaply across Europe. His first 'Irish' identity was too easily discoverable as there were many Irish people in Europe, so he moved to Japanese, and then finally Formosan. He was clearly highly intelligent and fluent with language because he managed to create an entire persona of a 'Formosan heathen', kidnapped by Jesuits, and then finally converted and redeemed by a Scottish priest in 1702. He travelled with the priest to London where he became a 'must have' guest at dinner tables - speaking gibberish and eating raw meat (Formosans apparently only ate meat raw). He was so successful that he made his account of Formosa into a book (writing apparently took around 2 months) and it sold out almost immediately it was published. He made up language (creating a new alphabet), customs, appearance, and history - borrowing from a range of sources including accounts of the Aztecs. Many challenged his authenticity, but his quick wits (and general prejudice against Jesuits and the Catholic Church) kept him afloat - even when challenged by Royal Society members. He eventually revealed the hoax, but had a later career as a writer, and … [Click Below for Full Description]
