NEWTON, Isaac
William Innys Woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, Title printed in red and black. With 12 folding engraved plates. Later morocco; some minor spotting, but overall a very nice copy. Fourth edition. This was the final edition which Newton revised. Regarded as one of the great classics of optics, this work expounds Newton’s corpuscular or emission theory of light, and is the first work to contain his optical discoveries in a collected form. His set of “queries” (the complete 31, up from 16 in the original edition of 1704) on the nature of matter was considered to be the most important feature of the Opticks and had a profound influence on scientific thought.&

PSALMANAZAR, George
London, printed for Dan. Brown, a.o., 1704.Contemporary panelled calf (hinges splitting but holding). With engraved folding plate showing the 'Formosan Alphabet' (with tear), and 15 (of 16) engraved plates showing costumes, money, buildings, boats etc.(margin of folding plate of the funeral sl. dam.; plate 12 missing as often and map missing) XIV,(56),327,(9) pp.First edition. - One of the most fantastic literary forgeries of all times. Psalmanazar (N.F.B. de Rodes ?), a native from the south of France, led the life of an adventurer. Being instructed by Jesuit tutors in the history and geography of Japan he pretended to be a native of Japan, under influence of chaplain William Innes, to render the story more plausible, this was changed into being a native of Formosa. In London he attracted at once popular interest. Psalmanazar invented his own 'Formosan' language etc., and he wrote his fictitious narration. What was not due to his own imagination he borrowed from the accounts of Varenius and Candidius. Doubt at once arose over the authenticity of his narrative, and after Innes was sent as chaplain-general to the English forces in Portugal, he felt incompetent to sustain his imposture unaided. (D.N.B.). 'Its lurid descriptions of polygamy, human sacrifice, cannibalism and infanticide caused a sensation. Allegedly written in Latin, then translated into English, it rapidly went through two editions, with a French translation at Amsterdam in 1705, and a German version at Frankfurt in 1716' (Howgego V, P35). - Age-browned.

Bidloo, Govard [Govert]
SECOND EDITION OF A VERY RARE WORK by the celebrated Dutch anatomist and surgeon Govard Bidloo. Expanded from the first edition, this work is illustrated with sixteen handsome copper-engraved plates. The first edition of 1704 was illustrated with only seven. The Exercitationum is a "collection of ten anatomical and surgical essays by the celebrated Leyden anatomist. In the two essays on the nerves Bidloo maintains that the nerves do not contain fluid but are rather a mass of fibers. In the seventh essay, 'De oculo purulento' (p. 73-82), the treatment for hypopyon is described" (Bernard Becker Collection in Ophthalmology 49). Bidloo (1649-1713) is most famous for his rare and highly prized anatomical atlas, Anatomia humani corporis, which is very rarely on the market. "Bidloo, professor of anatomy at The Hague, was at one time physician to William of Orange. An English contemporary, William Cowper, furnished his Anatomy of humane bodies almost completely with engravings plagiarized from this book by Bidloo, who promptly and publicly excoriated Cowper in a published communication to the Royal Society. Before the days of copyright, this is one of the most famous instances of plagiarism in the history of medicine" (Heirs of Hippocrates 667, citing Anatomia corporis humana). Bound with Muys, Wijer Willem. Dissertatio et observationes de salis ammoniaci praeclaro ad febres intermittentes usu and De Gorter, Johannes. Illustrator-Pierre Mortier
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier; Amsterdam, 1704. First Edition. Map. Very Good. Original hand colored map of Pescia, Tuscany. Copper engraving. Crease at center fold of map. 50 x 58 cm. 14-1/2 x 17-1/2 inches. Colored coat of arms of Pescia at top of map. Birds-eye-view representation of the Pescia River and Tuscany, Italy, with 14 labeled points of interest described in lower-left margin. The cartographer, Pierre Mortier established himself in the field of cartographical publishing by offering editions of French maps, primarily Sanson's and Jaillot's to a public tired of the great but dated Dutch offerings. Working on a scale larger than the typical Dutch folio map and providing the new insights of French geography, he was immensely successful. Mortier reprinted and expanded Blaeu's "Theatrum Civitatum Italiae". This is a well-preserved example of his work. Scattered light stains bordering image. Illustrations remain clear and crisp, with vivid colors. A superior print in excellent condition.
