[DAMPIER] RAY, John
London: M. Clark for H. Faithorne, 1704. Three volumes, folio; some browning and scattered foxing particularly in the third volume (as usual); a good set in recent period-style half calf with marbled paper boards, a handsome set. With a description of Dampier's west Australian herbarium. First edition, first issue, complete with the rare third volume published eighteen years after the main work in a single issue limited to only 200 copies: this rare third volume notably includes contemporary descriptions of some of the plants collected by Dampier on the northwest coast of Australia.John Ray was considered the "father of British botany" and this was his greatest work, the most important botanical text of the seventeenth century, and the foundation of modern botany. By the time he wrote the first volume Ray had gained an "encyclopaedic knowledge of the literature of botany and horticulture, from ancient times to the work of his contemporaries, including the latest acquisitions from microscopy. His clear mind and balanced judgement enabled him to select the well-attested facts from this mass of material and to present them in a rational perspective..." (Morton, History of Botanical Science). This work has specific importance to Australia. In 1699 Dampier, the first Englishman to land on the Australian continent, gathered together specimens of Australia's exotic flora. This collection of plants came from various places on the West Australian coast including Dirk Hartog Island, Shark Bay, near present-day Karratha, and East Lewis Island in the Dampier Archipelago south of Broome. … [Click Below for Full Description]

NEWTON, Isaac
Complete with decorative headpieces, initials, 12 folding engraved plates, woodcut diagrams in text, errata and publishers ads. Contemporary calf, rebacked, covers worn; a couple of plates with small tears repaired, some browning and soiling, but still a good sound copy. Signatures of Mary Francis and John Burridge on the title page, and the bookplate of Arnold Thackray. Third edition, corrected. Regarded as one of the great classics of optics, this work expounds Newton?s corpuscular or emission theory of light, and is the first work to contain his optical discoveries in a collected form. His set of ?queries? (the complete 31, up from 16 in the original edition of 1704) on the nature of matter was considered to be the most important feature of the Opticks and had a profound influence on scientific thought.According to Babson, page 68, ?This is a reprint of the previous edition (1718, the second issue of second edition), save for a few corrections and the addition of one passage in the last sentence referring to Noah and his sons.? (This edition was apparently shortened by Newton.) Our copy contains the two pages of publisher?s advertisements from the previous edition of 1718 (see Babson, 133).

Don Juan [Ivan] de Zabaleta
Joseph Texido, Barcelona 1704 - Vellum is moderately wrinkled and soiled, as pictured. A remnant of each leather tie is still attached (two to the front board and two to the rear, but the majority of each tie is missing). Text block is moderately age-darkened and head of text block is mildly foxed. Discoloration from water exposure to the upper and/or lower edge of most pages. Moderate insect damage (holes) to the lower corner of the half title page (not affecting text), and minor chipping to several other leaves. Some pages are moderately age-darkened, while others remain quite bright. Hinges are slightly worn, but overall the binding is sound, square and tight. Overall, this scarce copy is in good condition (or perhaps better than average for its age!). We are happy to answer questions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lillingston, Luke
London, 1704. (xviii) 171 pp. Very nice copy of a scarce book documenting a cat fight between a British naval officer and his army counterpart. Robert Wilmot?'s 1695 expedition was sent to Jamaica to protect British interests against the French. Lillingstone?'s regiment of about 1200 soldiers accompanied the expedition, which attacked the French at Hispaniola. Although the venture was poorly planned and a number of Lillingstone?'s men were sick and ineffective, they somehow managed to capture considerable loot. However, this became the cause of a quarrel between Wilmot and Lillingstone, who were already on poor terms. The entire force, ravaged by yellow fever, retired; Wilmot sailed for England and died of the same disease on the way home. When Lillingston returned to England he published a scathing attack on Wilmot. In reply, Josiah Burchett, Secretary of the Admiralty, published an account of the affair which did not reflect well on Lillingston. This is Lillingston?'s answer to Burchett?'s critique. Thanks to the tortured train of attacks and counter-attacks, this work is a detailed summary of the events that took place on the expedition, and is an important document in the War of the English Succession. A clean fresh copy bound in mottled calf, rebacked to match, with original spine label laid down.

[Defoe, Daniel, attributed to.]
[London, 1704. Broadsheet, small folio (315 x 152 mm); left-hand margin trimmed close in lower half of sheet, touching a few letters, minor tears from previous fold, uniformly toned. A rare broadsheet sometimes attributed to Defoe (although more likely written by his agent in Scotland John Pierce), praising the Lords for their action affirming the right of freeholders to vote in the Aylesbury election. There is much evidence to associate Pierce with this pamphlet, and he may well have been the author, though it is possible that he and Defoe collaborated on it. Moore 74 describes a 4-page printing of this address, but notes there is a "copy with 2 unnumbered pages" at Indiana University. This copy would seem to conform to that at Indiana. "There can be no doubt that [Defoe] was deeply involved in it, in conjunction with...John Pierce...the weight of evidence is in favour of Pierce, rather than Defoe, as the actual author" (ESTC citing Furbank and Owens, Defoe de-attributions). ESTC locates 8 copies, Lilly, UC-Riverside, and Yale only in the U.S.
