Harris, John
London: Dan Brown, Tim. Goodwin, John Walthoe [etc.], 1704 -1710. Harris, John (1666?-1719). Lexicon technicum: Or, an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences: Explaining not only the terms of art, but the arts themselves. 2 vols., folio. Unpaginated; collation available on request. Engraved portrait frontispiece by G. White after R. White in Vol. I, 14 engraved plates, text woodcuts. London: Dan Brown, Tim. Goodwin, John Walthoe [etc.], 1704-1710. 320 x 205 mm. Paneled calf ca. 1704-10, rebacked, endpapers renewed. A few plates toned, but a fine copy. Armorial bookplate of John Manley, Esq. in Vol. II.First Edition of the first English dictionary of arts and sciences, and the earliest modern encyclopedia of science. Harris was the first to make the distinction between "word-books" (dictionaries) and "subject-books (encyclopedias), and his Lexicon Technicum is the first English encyclopedia to be arranged in alphabetical order, as opposed to systematic order in the tradition of the medieval encyclopedist, Isidore of Seville. A clergyman educated at Oxford, Harris took an early interest in science, and was elected to the Royal Society in 1696. As a result, he had access to many of the greatest scientific minds in England, and the Lexicon technicum may be the first example of an encyclopedist relying directly on the consultation and help of experts or specialists, such as John Ray and Isaac Newton. In particular Harris relied heavily on the writings of Isaac Newton as a source, quoting lengthy excerpts from them under such headings as "Attraction," "Colour," "Fluxio … [Click Below for Full Description]

An extremely rare and curious emblem book, with the text in the form of seven dialogues between Vir Politicus and Theologicus by the Hungarian Jesuit theologian Johann Raicsani (or Janos Rajcsanyi). The dialogues concern (1) The Existence of God; (2) Divine Providence; (3) Fate; (4) Predestination and Divine Prescience; (5) Immortality of the Soul; (6) On Gehenna; and (7) Resurrection of the Dead. Along with a frontispiece, each dialogue is preceded by an emblematic engraving by the Viennese artist/engraver Franz-Ambros Dietel (d. 1737?). They are extraordinary, and frequently visionary, pictorial representations of the substance of each of the dialogues. The frontispiece is signed "A. Dietel fecit" and others simply "D." De la Créquiniere, who spent a number of years in India, proposes early Hebrew and East Indian civilizations share major religious origins. To key modern scholars, Conformité “is an important work in the genesis of historical ethnology…. Pierre MORTIER (1661 - 1711)
Modern 3/4 blue morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Manuscript note on fly leaf: a premium awarded to Miss Eliza Dudley for her studiousness and good behaviour in School by the Sabbath School Society, Brighton, Dec. 16th, 1827. Engraved frontispiece by Frederick Hendrik van Hove. Published two years after the king's death, "The Life and Memorable Actions of King William III" is a panegyric biography of William III (1650 -1702), sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from 1672, and King of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until his death. A Protestant, William participated in several wars against the powerful Catholic king of France, Louis XIV, in coalition with Protestant and Catholic powers in Europe. Many Protestants heralded him as a champion of their faith. In 1685, his Catholic father-in-law, James, Duke of York, became king of England, Ireland and Scotland. James's reign was unpopular with the Protestant majority in Britain. William, supported by a group of influential British political and religious leaders, invaded England in what became known as the "Glorious Revolution." Gerard MERCATOR (Kremer)
Published for the first time in 1578 in the Geographia by Mercator, this plate was late included in all the editions of Ptolemy/Mercator published in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leyden untile 1740. This example comes from the Amsterdam edition of 1704. Copperplate, some foxing, otherwise good conditions. 470 340mm
