Hoffmann von Hoffmannswaldau, Christian.
Breslau, Jesaia Fellgiebel, 1704. Doppelblattgr. Frontispiz (zum ‚Getreuen Schäfer‘), Haupttitel und 16 Bl. Vorrede (Dünnhaupt 1.I.9) – 2. Der Getreue Schäffer. 192 S. Mit 5 (teils verbundenen) Kupfertafeln. Die Alfeo-Vorrede ist von Lohenstein übertragen. (D. 1.II.5). – 3. Der Sterbende Socrates. Gestoch. Portr., Kupfertitel, Titel, 158 S. (D. 1.III.7) – 4. Helden-Briefe. Kupfertitel, 7 Bl., 160 S. (D. 1.IV.7). – 5. Poetische Geschicht Reden. 32 S. (D. 1.V.7) – 6. Hochzeit Gedichte. 64 S. (D. 1.VI.6) – 7. Begräbnüß Gedichte. 80 S. (D. 1.VII.6). – 8. [Click Below for Full Description]

HAWKINS, John.
London: For Eben. Tracy and John Wyat, 1704. Quarto (193 × 147 mm). Contemporary panelled sheep, neatly rebacked. Armorial bookplate of John, Earl of Loudon to front pastedown. Corners extensively worn away, covers with considerable surface erosion and wear, inner hinges strengthened. Paper stock lightly browned, lower outer corner of the first and last few leaves a little frayed, blank upper margin of title-page cut away, presumably removing a former owner's signature, pen trials to the front free endpaper. Withal, still a very good copy. Second, improved edition, first published in 1689, of John Hawkins's guide to double-entry book-keeping according to the Italian method, here corrected and amended by John Rayner, who advertises his school for merchants near St. Paul's Church in London. Hawkins, who dedicates his work to Thomas Pilkington, Lord Mayor of the City of London, writes in the Epistle to the reader that "The paths that lead to the practice of Merchants Accompts are rough and crooked, and though many Authors have very accurately endeavoured to conduct the industrious through those Meanders, yet very few have hitherto arrived at their intended perfection, but this Clavis I hope contains such plain Directions, as without any elaborate pains; (like a Clew) may guide the industrious Student through most of those Inticacies." Hanson 429; ICAEW, p. 74. No edition in Herwood.

Trevor Johnson showed how the Jesuit Matthaeus Rader's lavishly illustrated Bavaria Sancta (1615-28), directly commissioned by Duke Maximilian I, promoted a distinctive vision of pietas bavarica, harmonising land, Church and dynasty. The work helped to define Bavaria as the premier Catholic territory within the Holy Roman Empire, while within the duchy, its illustrated stories fostered the great expansion and proliferation of shrines and pilgrimages, including the reactivated cults of ancient local Bavarian saints, which were so much a feature of the religious culture of the territory during the Baroque period. In several respects, Tamas Sayo's account of Jesuit hagiographical writing in Hungary, offered a complimentary analysis. Published for the first time in 1578 in the Geographia by Mercator, this plate was late included in all the editions of Ptolemy/Mercator published in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leyden untile 1740. This example comes from the Amsterdam edition of 1704. Copperplate, some foxing, otherwise good conditions. Dimensioni 360 340mm
