First edition. 1704 Lexicon Technicum John Harris 1st English SCIENCES Isaac Newton Optics 2v ‘The first technical dictionary in any language!’ (PMM) “it was the first work of the kind professing to embrace a detailed view of the whole body of the sciences and arts.” (Lowndes) ‘Lexicon Technicum’ was the first English language dictionary of arts and sciences. First printed in 1704 in London, ‘Lexicon Technicum’ became the first book to be identified as a dictionary, or ‘word-book’ as opposed to an encyclopedia. John Harris was the first to make a distinction between the two types of major references and his ‘Universal English Dictionary’ was the first to encyclopedia to be organized in an alphabetical order. This work is especially notable for being the first work to include the consultation of experts, in this case, Isaac Newton who contributed excerpts on various topics such as gravity, planetary motion, behavior of light, and his own ‘De Natura Acidorum’ – Newton’s only work on chemistry. Newton also included his treatises on optics. Exceedingly rare to find both volumes of this work. Both volumes in true first edition. See below. PERIEGETES, Dionysius; Edward Wells
[8] pp 120,113-116 [8] pages; 16 maps. Edward Wells' 1704 Periegetes complete with 16 maps including 'America Septentrionalis Tabula' and 'America Australis Tabula'. Contemporary panelled calf with pretty tulip decorations to corners of panels on both boards, red morocco spine label, cracking along upper hinge with old repair, red speckled edges; collated and complete but without a front free endpaper (not called for) thus beginning with the title page, A1. On the front pastedown, book plate and handwritten shelf mark of the 'United Presbyterian College. Brown-Lindsay Library' - dispersed c1900. Very good text which is in Greek followed by Latin notes and verse translation. The text and register are continuous despite wayward pagination. The maps by Wells are about 15.5x8.5 cm with their titles in Latin above the top border and latitude and longitude also engraved outside the borders. Dr Edward Wells (1677-1727) was a mathematician and map-maker who followed the discoveries of Hennepin in his maps of America, notably depicting California as an island.

1704. Civil Law for "Persons of Quality" [Wood, Thomas (1661-1722)]. A New Institute of the Imperial or Civil Law. With Notes, Shewing in Some Principal Cases, Amongst Other Observations, How the Canon Law, The Laws of England, And the Laws and Customs of Other Nations Differ From It. In Four Books. Composed For the Use of Some Persons of Quality. London: Printed by W.B. for Richard Sare, 1704. [iv], xvii, [7], 361, [11] pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 5"). Contemporary paneled speckled calf, raised bands to spine. Light rubbing to boards, somewhat heavier rubbing to extremities, two small tears to head of spine, corners bumped, hinges cracked, moderate toning to text. A handsome copy. $500. * First edition. Wood's New Institute was a standard Anglo-American treatise during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and a well-thumbed reference for jurists who wished to apply an element of civilian learning to their work, such as Joseph Story. As the title suggests, it is not only a summary adapted to the needs of students, but also a pioneering essay in comparative law. Wood pays some attention as well to Roman law's influence on the historical development of English law. Indeed, he observes that "Fleta and Bracton would look very naked if every Roman lawyer should pluck away his feathers" (ix). Later editions were published in 1712, 1721 and 1730. Dünnhaupt S. 737, 57.I.2.
